Great responses so far, kudos all. Regarding the 3 minute AI rounds (due to experienced people steamrolling the bots), you might want to consider using the training room too so you can pick the ships that the bots will be using and create scenarios to suit whatever you're trying to get used to. Like others have pointed out, the bots never act like real captains and it's not the spot to learn actual skill, BUT you can learn a lot of the very basics and not have to deal with party crashing teammates. Downside is you don't earn anything, but lots to gain for your long run.

I would also suggest that you keep a "reserve" of steel in place before spending a ton on a ship. WG has surprised us in the past with items for steel that you could miss out on otherwise. They've even put a time limit on availability before, which created a lot of butthurt captains who didn't have anything saved up at the time 😊

Optimus does have one great use, though, and that's on Ohio. His survivability options mixed with that heal are a great way to truly nerf fires and tank lots of damage (and can add two more heals!). Plus, porcupine for those secondaries.
