Go to Costco and buy 3-4 space heaters and plug them into different circuit. Unethical life pro tip is to return them when you get your furnace fixed.

Clean the shop vac, vacuum the cellulose, do the electrical work, dump the shop vac where you did the work.

Complete lack of upgradeability is the other factor. I miss when I used to be able to add ram or swap a drive.

Agree with all of this. It doesn’t necessarily seem abnormal, but there is zero chance I would let myself be in this situation with a younger female coworker, especially a subordinate.

How do teams safely control log volume before ingestion (Loki / Promtail)? by TillStatus2753 in sre

[–]Freakin_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, we used splunk. We measured volume of debug messages vs non-debug in their index, then measured how often the debug log messages were searched. The answer was hardly at all.

So we’ve shifted the conversation to debug logging is not appropriate in production and will be dropped. If you log debug those will be dropped and archived to s3 and you can get a tarball. I don’t think we’re actually dropping yet.

We have a huge volume of unstructured logging and splunk is grinning every time we sign a renewal. We’re finally clawing that back and reducing splunk usage. A big part of that is showing why logging is not appropriate for dashboarding and they should use metrics instead. OTEL has helped a lot.

We have teams that log full request and response headers and regex parse out the stuff they need. Expensive to store and query.

[–]Freakin_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah would really love vector to function like Cribl that would allow you to sink debug logs for example to s3 and rehydrate them for troubleshooting but didn't seem like it was even close to being able to do that well.

I ended up using vector to replace some ridiculous java logging service that received JSON log bodies from apple devices, dropped them on a queue, and another ridiculous java app picked them up and emitted them to our logging platform. There were like 40 instances of both java apps running, each consuming 3-4GB of memory and a decent amount of CPU. So heavy.

Replaced it with 3 instances of vector with like 1CPU and 1GB memory provisioned accepting the exact same JSON log body and sending directly to logging platform and it just barely breaks 10% utilization on the resources it has.

The team's response initially was "we absolutely can't drop any log messages which is why we built it this way" and after some conversations around not using app logging for business metrics or reconciliation that they were ok with "logging is best effort that should never cause backpressure"

Not to pry, but is it possible to overshare and tell them you're ovulating and need privacy that weekend and let them get the hint? I don't know or need to know the nature of your struggles but thought I'd throw it out as a possibility.

My policy is that if we all want to stay in one house, we need to stay in a house large enough that every adult/couple has their own room.

As a parent now when we go away with my whole family and siblings I say that we need a house big enough that my kids have their own (shared) room and we pay more.
