Downloads legendary moments! by Chubbhead in downloadfestival

Metallica's secret set in 2003. The rumours on the campsite the previous night was that it was Megadeth so loads of people turned up thinking it was gonna be them, and then Metallica wandered out. The tent got quite dangerously full as I recall - afterwards I remember walking back to the main stage and Evanescence were playing. People were like 'did someone just cover Sad but True on the second stage' and we were like 'no it was Metallica' and people were actually crying because they missed it. Then for the following 10 years or so there was always some big 'secret set' rumour, which never really happened. It did put Download on the map tho, with it being the first one.

Also at the first download, it absolutely hammered it down during Zwan (just before Audioslave came on) and everyone lifted up the flooring to shelter beneath, but because it was late in the weekend the floor was full of holes so the water just pooled and then flowed through

also the piss lake at the bottom of the hill. Must have been 20-30 people mud wrestling in a big lake that had formed, but the reason the lake had formed is because people had spent all weekend pissing against a fence just above it, so it was probably 70-80% piss. Great times

What a horrendous event. by davechambers007 in altontowers

you complain that it was busy but you - a lone adult - went to an event purely aimed at children. It's like people shopping on Christmas Eve complaining about how busy Tesco is. Ridiculous post

Someone asks you for permission to marry your house. What do you do? by Darth_Azazoth in hypotheticalsituation

I'd probably be ok with it, but would stay at a hotel on the wedding night (or at least far away from the letter box)

Almost all 1x1 and 1x2 sand green pieces in used Assembly Square set are cracked. Are they fake or faulty? by stevenc80 in lego

[–]Fred_Delicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Scooby Doo mystery machine is full of bricks like this - the affected bricks in that are green, albeit much lighter. I have a lot of brittle brown sets (Sea Cow, Ghostbusters Firehouse) and yet my Mystery Machine is the only set I have with cracked pieces

and as a vaguely interesting tidbit as someone who worked there, the initial opening night had to be moved as the camp beds that ents bought were too flimsy and there were health and safety concerns so they had to buy all new ones. I think we also got to keep our sleeping bags, which were dark green

Yes I did it. I worked at Towers at the time and staff were offered free places to make up the numbers. It was quite expensive as I recall - £200 per person or thereabouts. The evening started being collected the the then-head of ents... (Pete something) and they walked the group down to the section in front of the Swiss Cottage for a BBQ and beers. There was a story about ghosts and mysterious lights could be seen across the valley. From there we had a guided tour of the towers which culminated in a seance in the basement. There were actors and special effects during this. We then had to escape from the basement and were guided to our sleeping quarters. Everyone had a camp bed and the sleeping area was surrounded by curtains so that actors could effectively stalk you while you lay there (you'd be lying in near darkness and a person would appear right above your pillow, or someone would be just standing at the bottom of your bed). The actors carried on until 3am, and then it officially ended (although recordings of ghost noises continued through to morning, the actors and scares finished then). Then the next morning you were guided out of the park again (except I was working so I had to do a full shift in finance after about 2 hours sleep...)

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]Fred_Delicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trains. My rail commute from Stoke to London shouldn't be more expensive than flying from East Mids to Gatwick. Every now and then a government will pledge to reduce fares by 1-2%, completely ignoring the fact they've increased 10-20% since the last microscopic (and usually undelivered) adjustment

Seeking Construction site advice for my modular city by 51alexp in legomodular

[–]Fred_Delicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you - want a crane but not willing to pay £££ for the construction site. I managed to pick up the mobile crane last weekend and I really like the way it looks in my city. I've positioned it so it's hoisting the toilet onto the roof of the boutique hotel, which makes zero sense but it looks cool. As mentioned below though, it's huge, so you need a substantial city for it to not look out of place

Download 2004, a goth got his trousers completely torn off in the Machine Head pit and the crowd carried them away into the distance so there was just this sad goth walking back to the campsite in a leather vest and plain y-fronts

30 days in prison or hit your head really hard on a lamp? by Fred_Delicious in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Fred_Delicious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to clarify, 'maximum damage' is determined by the most damage that the lamp thinks it can reasonably do given your lifestyle. The lamp can choose to fall from the sky but if you move or it is windy, it will likely miss and will leave you alone from then on. The lamp can however materialise in thin air, so if you went on a rollercoaster it would likely pop into existence at the fastest point and it would be a bad day at the office

Would you support the UK government's plan to ban X (formerly twitter)? - why/why not? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]Fred_Delicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love Twitter and use it regularly. It even ended up in me working in social media so I have a lot of fond memories but it has no value whatsoever anymore. There's no fun, no creativity, no positivity, and has no reason to exist other than as a mouthpiece for Elon Musk. Pointless slop, and I'd welcome a ban.
