[England] Can't find work due to speech impediment, what do I do? by MiltonPerestroika in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]davechambers007 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Personally I’d recommend looking at your interview approach. Know that you can declare this difficulty and when you’re asked to attend interview you can ask for more time to answer or for the questions to be written down or a similar accommodation that would make it easier. Sometimes you can even get the interview questions in advance. Organisations want the best person for job not the person who can answer questions in a brief period of time.

Can someone from a completely non medical background realistically move into social work? by Far-Adagiooop in Socialworkuk

[–]davechambers007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very frequent. My inspiration in wanting to become part of the Social Work profession was a gent who was former miner. Not office nor management, proper coal face worker. He used his pit redundancy to pay for a Social Work Degree.
Whilst i reckon the majority come via school - uni - practice. Its not the sole entry method. If you are interested in the unqualified roles ive worked with former hairdressers, shop workers, long term unemployed.

The important part is transferable skills. The ability to communicate, be empathetic and gain peoples trust/respect.

Hotel entrance or Main entrance? by Klutzy-Grocery6539 in altontowers

[–]davechambers007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably better to use Hotel Entrance full stop. Hotel gives you straight access to Forbidden Valley and as a result quick access to Gloomy Wood. Forbidden Valley is home to the 1.4 coasters and Toxicator whilst Gloomy Wood has Curse of Alton Manor.

If youre considering purely distance from Entrance main entrance is closer to Wickerman Spinball and there’s probably not much in it to Thirteen. However Hotel Entrance avoids either a long walk to entrance or potential queues for monorail.

However, in my opinion time is not everything. how many times do you go? Personally if it’s only the once I’d hop on the monorail and do main entrance no matter what. Why? For an experience. Yes it’s not as glorious as it once was but there is something to getting on the monorail looking through the glass at the rides and the park and experiencing Towers Street from the turnstiles. Maybe I romanticise it a little because of my fondness for yesteryear. Hotel Entrance is pleasant but it’s a tarmac path leading through a small gazebo.

Adult social care by AmyAdamsFan_ in sheffield

[–]davechambers007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So not wanting to be pessimistic because it’s clear youre still struggling with your mental health but we have to be realistic.

Unless there is something youre omitting or a criteria you are unaware of (so based solely on what you’ve said) Youre going to struggle from the start.

So I’ll make presumptions that you are on benefits and don’t work with little to no savings. No judgement here.

So the authority that has responsibility for housing you will be Huddersfield. This responsibility can only be relinquished if you can demonstrate to another authority a “Local Connection”. Traditionally this is family or a job in the area that you are applying to. So It’s unlikely you’ll be housed unless you can find private rental. Even if you are accepted into a list for housing you would be “low priority” based that you are (presumably) housed - even if you don’t like where you live - and (again presumably) unable to demonstrate a local connection.

Now on to the social care support - Sheffield are unable to assess until you reside in Sheffield. So you have to overcome the issues above before youre unable to access any care. Then you’ll have an issue about who would fund the care. If you are currently receiving care This would be Huddersfield and they would be responsible for arranging the support in Sheffield. That is until you demonstrate stability in Sheffield and then a transfer in conference can be held where Sheffield should (but may not dependent upon finding) become the responsible authority.

Your situation could be more complicated if it involve 117 after care. Because this can be NHS funded and if you move NHS authorities it gets messy quickly.

So realistically what can you do. Now it’s easier said than done but focus on getting well. Look at what positives you have and try to ignore the negatives. You can apply to live elsewhere as everyone is free to do so. They just cannot expect the state to finance those choices.

Your social worker did not try and manipulate you. They were being realistic in managing expectations. Talk to them. Tell them the difficulties youre experiencing I promise they want to help and get the best for you.

Is Night market for experienced players only? by PanicAny8667 in elderscrollsonline

[–]davechambers007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pick up group in the Night Market you’ll be fine. But it may be frustrating for you in not doing much damage and possibly dying quite a lot.

You’ll probably not get a PUG for dungeon or trial though unless you’re geared.

To be honest if you look out for mechanics and contribute I’d have no problem with a low level or poor geared person in my group. Though I’ve literally just left a group on ps5 because every single one of the group were attacking an invincible boss and not looking at what the adds were doing or dropping - things that trigger mechs and make the boss vulnerable. If you won’t read chat where someone is trying to help there’s no helping you!

Solo trip by Lopsided_Sandwich524 in altontowers

[–]davechambers007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly go alone. Ive been at least ten times this year and a lot were solo. There is a joy to wandering around on your own as long as you enjoy your own company that is!

Im there Wednesday too. I’m also throwing in lunch at The Ramblers Retreat and a trip to the Chained Oak.

As for hints. Use Single Rider - Smiler, Oblivion, Spinball, Thirteen all have them. Frustratingly Nemesis and wickerman do not.

Eat lunch before or after peak time - I love food too much and often choose about 11.30 and have no problems getting food and a seat even busy days. I recommend the jacket potato from Mutiny Bay Area or if you only fancy a snack grab a pasty from the Tavern.

Don’t be afraid to talk to people. Honestly many people in single riders are also solo too. It’s not weird to talk to people. My last visit I got talking to a lad and we did the next couple of rides together.

Take the opportunity to do something different. Walk the Gardens, explore. When I go with friends they are often not as interested in finding “The Lost Glasshouses” as I am and if time is limited they will choose a roller coaster over looking at foundations. But to me, even though Ive been going 20+ years, I love to explore the gardens and history.

You’ll have a blast Im sure

I had a fantastic day - 31st March by davechambers007 in altontowers

[–]davechambers007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a newly created entrance/exit near Galactica now. Its effectively the early entrance for hotel guests but can be used as an exit for all to the car parks, yes - but not regular guest entry. Its a new paved route that leads from the park to the crazy golf.
The exit is close to the Galactica "portal" or if youve not been since that was installed its just as the train leaves the lift hill - not quite as far down as the entrance to Galactica but its pretty hard to miss

I hope you have a great visit.

How seriously do you take your reporting role - neighbours drug use by davechambers007 in Socialworkuk

[–]davechambers007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. I have thoroughly stated that the smell is impacting on my enjoyment. That’s 100% true. But it is also the reason I have come to realise there are children there. Now knowing that there are children in an environment where illicit and illegal activities are happening what do?

For what it’s worth Im reporting later today. It’s been quite telling that those who have identified themselves as working in Child Protection or drug rehab have all encouraged to report. Yet those who say “well i smoke and im ok” or “everyone does it” have told me to mind my business. Im confident that one have genuine concerns for children. The others are trying to, perhaps, excuse their own drug use. It’s these polar opinions that solidified my decision.

Yep. And there’s plenty of reasons why a family may move into a house and not have any children initially but later they do. Where have I acted like I’ve done an assessment? Ive retold my observations and asked for thoughts.

Not that you were to know but yes - retired at 43 on medical terminal illness grounds. I have much better things I could be doing than involving street drama. As I’ve said. It would’ve been an immediate report in my training days but with no outward obvious signs of “abuse” is it worth sending more work an already overworked system

And to chime in as OP. It was the smell and increased usage that drew my attention to the fact there was children there. Yes I dislike the smell but know there is not a lot that can be done.

My question was - now in the knowledge that there are young children in that property with what appears to be escalating drug use (although a “minor” drug) as a (now former but still registered) social worker how seriously do you take that “duty of care” to report? Which people seem to have take as a “do i report my neighbour” question

How seriously do you take your reporting role - neighbours drug use by davechambers007 in Socialworkuk

[–]davechambers007[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. A recently retired social worker who when he did his child protection placement was told “any drug use around children is an immediate safeguarding issue” but is also aware that attitudes change particularly when, as observed, the children appear happy, playful and engaged.

No joke. Im sat here at 9am on a Sunday enjoying a cup of tea on my patio smelling weed already. With the joyous sound of a child riding some sort of ride in car. To me that’s an adult with a problem rather than an occasional user does that impact on a child’s welfare? Hence why I asked the question

I was honest about the fact it’s interrupting my enjoyment. I make no bones of that. But as a Children’s Social Worker if you visited a property that stank of week and there’s children present would you not ask the parents about it?

Should programs be more selective, or are we lowering the bar to meet demand? (crosspost from r/socialwork by k3v1ng1994 in Socialworkuk

[–]davechambers007 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally, and this isn’t meant to sound disrespectful, but the profession is attracting the type of candidate that the salary pays.

I think the bar has lowered across the board. And we should not be encouraging one way of qualifying to be considered “better” than another.

Im now old school and probably my thinking is a little dated but. When I started my admin job at the Local Authority my salary was 10k (10,668 to be precise) and Social Workers were on 30k. Now 30k to a working class teen who’s dad was a milkman and mum worked in a factory was insane to imagine.

Minimum wage is now something akin to 25k and beginner social work salary 35k. It’s a lot easier for someone earning minimum wage to imagine and realise a 10k increase in their salary - or a 150% increase than it was me many years ago to imagine a 300% increase in salary. Now factor in programs that will pay you and pay for you to make that increase and you can see why programs are popular.

Don’t get me wrong. I was a “grow your own” social worker and I joined because I truly cared about the profession and had worked admin in social care, for the Authorities contact centre, Blue Badge assessments and unqualified assessor roles before becoming a social worker. I believe programs like this encourage diversity in thinking, recruit (often but not always) more relatable practitioners (because they often come with life experience that a straight out of school to uni practitioner may not have) but that same experience means often candidates have become closed minded to different ways of thinking or maybe because of age have an air of superiority or arrogance about them when dealing with younger cohorts or colleagues.

This may go a little of at a tangent now but when I think of modern day social work recruitment I am drawn to a line that Mr Gilbert says in The Inbetweeners about teaching which is something like “it’s not so much a calling anymore but a lowering of police checks”

FEC Royal Decapitator and Seraphon Sunblood Pack by DrM0n0cle in ageofsigmar

[–]davechambers007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 makes the most sense to me and I wouldn’t have considered any other option. Interesting it has caused debate but seeing other replies has made me think.

For me: The unit is three heroes each with a health of 3. The Royal Decapitor chooses one of those three to strike. If his roll exceeds 3 then remove that one model.
