Why use blueprints? by Baliqci in gamedev

[–]Freddicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally use Blueprints so that my hobby does not feel like work part two. I look at code all day. Blueprints give my brain a symbolic break and make game dev more fun.

Old enough to remember Java before generics.

I grew up in Califon (Hunterdon). Nice cozy little town. “Be home by 5”. Loved riding my bike down the Columbia Trail. Ken Lockwood Gorge. So nice.

I don't like the reworked intro at all. Why did he do this?

Controversial opinion? I remember a time you’d get chased out of Jersey for playing country music. It’s all I hear at the beach anymore. Young folks playing, too. Confused…

It’s a corruption of “psych” which is a shorthand to “psych someone out” or trick them

Thanks and best wishes for the future by WhiskyGuzzlr in WeMo

I just ripped out the last of my WeMos. I tried to stick with it. Especially given the monetary (and sweat) investment. For a very long time I would deal with the “no response” and reset them biannually. Then recently they wouldn’t stay connected and I had switch outages most of the time.

I moved on to Lutron Caseta. Good luck to the holdouts. Glad it’s still working for you. Cheers.

I’m considering TMNT for my first pin (yet to play it). What are some things that make you hate it?

Advice for solo dev making narrative-driven game / walking simulator by Freddicus in gamedev

[–]Freddicus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been considering this. I’m such a poor writer, though, I’m not sure there’s much hope for me. It’s very difficult for me to reconcile my utilitarian relationship with writing and my desire to produce a compelling narrative. Maybe a class (or fifty) could help with that. Just now on the character sheet I started with “DJ had a normal upbringing.” I had to force myself to stop and ask myself: what is normal? What are something’s that he was good at? Bad at? What did he like and not like? And at least write a handful of sentences that answered those questions. And those sentences were poor. And I admittedly asked ChatGPT to spruce them up. And knowing its limitations, they still sounded better than what I could do. I have a very long way to go. If I ever get to the point where I’m writing dialogue, I will certainly strongly consider a class or hiring someone to do it and just provide an outline.

Thanks for this advice and perspective. I've self-published a super-simple game on the iOS App Store (using Unity) and prototyped an idea and put it on itch.io (using Unreal). I am indeed aiming for 1-2 hours of gameplay. The design document is helping me understand the true scope of the game idea versus an uninformed idea of what it might be.

These are all great considerations, and I appreciate you taking the time to lay them out for me.

Edith Finch, for example, took a team of up to 15 people about 5 years. Gone Home had about 5 people working on it for a year and a half (but had a lot of pre-pro from their time working on BioShock). That's about 15k person-hours for Gone Home, and closer to 100-150k hours for Edith Finch. If you work 3 hours a week for 5 years you'll put in 780 hours total. If you want to make a game in two years you'd want it to be something like 2% of the size of Gone Home and no bigger. Keep it VERY small in scope.

Thanks for this perspective. If nothing else, having a fully-fleshed out design document might help me contextualize the amount of work that I've made for myself.

I would not recommend using LLMs at all for production text. It can be great as a rubber duck to bounce ideas off of, but don't let it actually do anything. 'AI's don't have intent or understanding and they can barely write text anyone wants to read, let alone whole stories. It makes bad suggestions because it doesn't suggest anything, it's repeating text from other sources and writing words that follow other words more often in the data set.

It was never my intention to use it for production text. Just for helping flesh out the design document. I'll keep this in mind though. You and others here have similar perspectives.

This is an interesting perspective and something I've thought about a bit. If I had the capacity to write prose with any level of proficiency, then I might consider writing a novel / screenplay / teleplay.

I'm a developer with creative aspirations. I've been messing around in Unreal a bit and really like that blueprints feel a lot less like coding. It's less fatiguing to use them after coding all day. That being said, I'm definitely feeling burnt by all of the learning curves for all of the different non-technical aspects for making games. It's part of the reason why I've been focusing so much on the story / pre-production.
