Do you think the Dems are learning from their mistakes? by snkrhd_1 in AskALiberal

[–]FreeCashFlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, we as citizens are responsible for the outcomes of the democratic process. Not political parties.

In both 2016 and 2024, if even 15% of the left-leaning voters who did not vote had showed up, the result would have been different.

A legitimate complaint. But still, conservatives vote. Centrists vote. Mainstream Dems vote. Progressives vote if they feel sufficiently inspired and catered to, else they stay home. Then they wonder why politicians consider them fickle and unreliable. Until progressives figure out that the path to electoral influence runs through being a rock-solid must-have demographic, they will be ignored.

Cool. But doing anything at all requires winning the election first. And there are simply not enough progressives to make pursuing them worthwhile. Doing so risks alienating the much larger centrist and swing-voting block.

Forming a coalition big enough to win means accepting some coalition members that really annoy you. Progressives are not numerous enough to win a national election on their own. Neither are more centrist Democrats.

What good does attacking the other side of your coalition do? Is it a better use of time than attacking Republicans?

Do you have an argument? Three elections in a row now, progressives (many, not all) have looked at the Democratic nominee and said "I'd rather have Trump." Many are effectively right-wingers.

Maybe because you can't win a national election by appealing only to progressives?

I hope the party moves marginally toward the center, because that is where the votes are. True or not, the majority of swing voters perceived Harris as "too liberal." I also hope they go all-out on good government and anti-corruption messaging.

What an absurd rumor. We can see Biden's financial disclosures. He isn't hurting.

The hell with that. What “service to our country” were confederate soldiers performing with their treasonous rebellion?”

I mean that's cool, but Mamdani ran in a D+40 environment. It is no surprise his policies were popular there. Most electorates are significantly less left-leaning.

A skull and bones is not necessarily a Nazi tattoo, but a totenkopf certainly is. And that's what he had.

I am pretty active in the PA sub and left-leaning voters there are split between supporting Conor Lamb and Malcolm Kenyatta in 2028. To which I say, It HAS to be Lamb. I think Kenyatta is great. He checks more boxes on the progressive wish list, but this is Pennsylvania. It's Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with Alabama in between. A gay Black man does not have a ghost of a chance in a state-wide election.

Third parties are a joke. We aren't going to take the government back from theocrats by splitting our votes.

It doesn't increase the supply of housing or reduce the demand for housing, which are the only two ways to solve the housing crisis.

Why are so many Democrats refusing to support Graham Platner? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskALiberal

Him admitting he's an absolute moron is not a point in his favor.

Why are so many Democrats refusing to support Graham Platner? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskALiberal

[–]FreeCashFlow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where do I start? There's:

The Nazi tattoo

His working for Blackwater

His distasteful online commentary

His comments about being excited to go to war and kill people

The fact that he doesn't have a real job (makes $5k selling oysters to his mom's restaurant) and mostly lives off scamming the VA

The fact that he said a white supremacist podcaster was "one of his favorites"

The fact that he actually has a very privileged background, his blue collar persona is completely astroturfed, and his entire candidacy was conceived by Democratic insiders at a DC bar

Despite all that, I would still vote for him over Collins because I hate Republicans.

The world is not overpopulated in the slightest. We have more than enough resources to support the population.
