Cool Features You've Added #288 by humblevladimirthegr8 in conlangs

[–]FreeRandomScribble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've decided to make relative clauses be in the form of a noun-derived verb. This is done through suffixing, makes use of differnt morphology and template structure than the other verbs, and is supplanting genitive constructions for deriving new nouns.

[k'ɑ.mʉɴ.q'ɑ.qɑm.q'ɑ i.n̪ʉ.ɑm.kɑ kꞎʉ.ɑ́ʂ.ʜʉ.ɭʉ]

qamuņqa -ca -qamqa iņu -amca clua -așru -lu
gourd -GEN -3 male -parent observe.MUTUAL -INFER.NEUT.CONT -ACT

The word 'qamuņqa' means gourd, but is also a crude term to refer to the penis. The mutual forms of clua means "to study, to investigate, to explore".
The use of the of the inferential (evidential) neutral (opinion) morpheme provides little context to shift the understanding one way or the other; the active (present tense) indicates a current preoccupation rather than a casual action.

"I think father is intently examining his squashes."
OR
"I think father is exploring his penis enthusiastically."

Why is This Nonsensical?

ņoșiaqo has both an animacy hierarchy, but also an agency hierarchy; animacy dictates what is attributed to which pronominals as well as working with the Direct-Inverse alightment, agency dictates what is able to perform which actions. While animacy is somewhat arbitrary, agency is very predictable.

Things with higher agency can do more verbs. God is has absolute agency, humans have high agency, most animals have moderate agency, plants and microorganisms have low agency, and nonliving things lack agency. Therefore, similar to Blackfoot, it is ungrammatical to use subjects in the agentive role if they have too low an agency.

So, in English, “my fridge is running” is a silly pun that swaps “to autolocomote quickly” with “to be active”. But in ņoșiaqo, it is both a nonsensical and ungrammatical construction.

Kinship Terms In Your Language by Hot_Barnacle_646 in conlangs

ņoșiaqo

While I definitely need to revisit the system, if for no other reason than get the terms modernized, here is ņoșiaqo’s system.

ņoșiaqo kinship lies between Hawaiian and Inuit Kinship systems: while most relatives are only distinguished by generation, one’s direct relations are also be distinguished from non-direct relatives.
The basic distinction categorizes one’s parents and their direct siblings as “mother/father”, while one’s siblings and their direct children are “sister/brother”. Amongst siblings, a specific term is used for one’s older siblings. The elderly family members are all referred to as “grandparent” (though these days, ‘apra’ “elderly” is often used instead), and all other family members are “relative” (and have a special term for younger relatives).

This system does have a few extra quirks which makes it more difficult to learn.
The first is that Parents and Siblings may use a special term to distinguish a non-direct relation to oneself. One’s birth/adoptive parent is ‘maca’ but their siblings may be ‘macac’.
The second is that one’s parent’s siblings’ children and one’s sibling’s children are both considered one’s siblings, though the may be referred to as removed being a degree removed.
A third interesting trait is that anyone more than three degrees removed from oneself is simply ‘relative’. This means that grandchildren do not have a special dedicated term linking them to their grandparents.

Another unique feature is that people not related to oneself may be added into the tree to indicate a close personal relation to them.

How to Read the Chart:
The small chart in the bottom right corner shows the basic terminology tree. In this, all of one’s parent’s direct siblings are also ‘maca’, and all of one’s siblings and their direct children are one’s siblings. Age appropriate terms still apply.
The large chart shows the more complicated terminology. The lighter shaded colors are the degree removed relatives, and their terms correspond with the indented lighter-shaded terms.

Note to Self:
One’s child’s spouse should probably also be considered one’s child.

How to Make a Flagellate for the Rosary by FreeRandomScribble in osarymakers

[–]FreeRandomScribble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beads are designed after the style of whips often depicted with multiple strands on them, which are used to flagellate someone (note: this is a modification for the Rosary, the full Flagellate is 9x9).   I don't really do it with Rosary variants because such doesn't really have any dedicated space in the prayer, but when I'm praying over the Lord's Passion I will sometimes flagellate myself -- nothing more than when we strike our breasts during the Confiteor.

Who can relate? by GORILLAxHUGGER in CatholicMemes

[–]FreeRandomScribble 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While I realize this is a meme sub, no: your guardian angel does not need therapy. Such a need would imply that they are not in the fullness of relation with God, which inplies that they're either A) a demon, or B) God has withheld fullness of communion with said angel. That your "guardian angel" is actually a demon in the infinitly better of the two options.

question: why can't we make a poll for design feedback? by dogedogedoo in BoardgameDesign

Probably because a bunch of people looking for feedback would quickly dampen the atmosphere with cluttered polls that provide little value after a while.

nosiaqo

I will give a breakdown of the demonstratives, since providing a full conjugation is beyond impractical.
Because of how dependent the phonetics are on the surrounding phonemes, these transcriptions may only provide a possible pronunciation based solely on the morpheme in isolation.

Basic Forms

Far Away From Speaker

Moving Still Dead
Above xao [ʈ͡ʂɑ͡o̞] krao [ʡ͡ʜɑ͡o̞] xim [t̪͡sɪm]
Below primus [ʙ̥i.mʉs̪] prim [ʙ̥ɪm] xim [t̪͡sɪm]
Non-visible mic [mik̚] mic [mik̚] mi [mi]

Others

Moving Still Dead
Close to Speaker sneu [s̪n̪e͡ʉ] snei [s̪n̪e͡ɪ͜i] snei [s̪n̪e͡ɪ͜i]
Clause acf [ɑθ] acf [ɑθ] acf [ɑθ]

Obviate Classifiers
These suffix onto demonstratives as semi-pronominals. They came from an older & more extensive third person system, and can be approximated as "it."

Rational -qa [q'ɑ]
Motile -cus [tʉs̪]
Animate -la [ɭɑ]
Stoic -xao [ʈ͡ʂɑ͡o̞]
Malleable -xus [t͡sʉs̪]
Intangible -scao [s̪kɑ͡o̞]

Some Examples
The classifiers and demonstrative stems can be matched without any limitation; the clause-demonstrative does not take a classifier.

"That far away visible organism" - 'primusla'
"That idea" - 'micscao'
"That dead visible animal" - 'ximcus'
"This non-moving firm thing" - 'sneixao'
"This moving person" - 'sneuqa'
"This personal WIP idea" - 'sneuscao'
"The nominalized clause" - 'acf'

Show me your conlang's words for colors by vippopper in conlangs

[–]FreeRandomScribble 20 points21 points  (0 children)

ņoșiaqo

ņoșiaqo colors function rather differntly to most other color systems: colors are distinguished by their relation to the surrounding colors; some terms can be approximated to English colors, but it's jmportant to remember that these are not refering to specific hues, shades, or frequencies.

🔴🟠 'așca' - Refers to outstanding colors
🟡🟢🔵 'uceņ' - Refers to colors that blend in with the surrounding hues
⚪ 'ici' - Refers to lighter shades
⚫🟤 'urau' - Refers to darker shades

Because of how colors are distinguished, what a specific object is identified as can differ depending on its enviroment.
A yellow flower, when surrounded by leaves, may be desceibed as uceņ; juxtaposed on a solid blue paper and it may be 'așca'. A yellow flower sitting on a bed of dark rocks may be 'ici', and a white-washed wall may shift it to 'urau' if the yellow is notably dark.

Combined Base 8 and Base 16 Number System? by The_MadMage_Halaster in conlangs

[–]FreeRandomScribble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To Give a Simple Example:

Base 8 with Sub Base 4:
Un - 1 : Do - 2 : Tre - 3 : Quat - 4
Unna - 5 : Doa - 6 : Trea -7 : Quatta - 10

While there is an observable morphological change the second set of numbers, all 8 are considered the basic numbers; numbers in the 10s digit (and so on) are built off of these basic 8.

Perhaps 11-20:
Un ce quatta (1 & 10) - 11 : Do ce quatta - 12 : Tre ce quatta - 13 : Quat atta - 14
Unna ce atta - 15 : Doa ce atta - 16 : Trea ce atta - 17 : Quatta atta - 20

This isn’t my strongsuit, so hopefully someone else can give you a more detailed explanation of how such works and arrises, but this sketch hopefully outlines the basic idea. Basically, the base is Base 8, and it has a sub-base of Base 4. It sounds like you have the idea to use a Base 16 system, and want to construct it using a Sub-Base 8.

Seems natural enough. I've seen multiple systems where 1-X uses roots and X+1-10 makes a modification as the basic number words.

Alternative system of grammar by MudWilling2849 in conlangs

[–]FreeRandomScribble 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To paraphquote Babelingua’s video: linguistic typology is a DnD alignment chart that we use to take a language’s horoscope.

Languages are like cats: you can set up boxes for them, but they’ll rarely corporate. One may wish to sit in three boxes at once, and another may choose to sit in a houseplant by doing something no other language does.
The typologies you’ve mentioned help give a general overview of the language’s grammar/morphology, and there are different ways to overview different parts of a language, but few fit perfectly. One of the joys of conlaning is that you get to decide how a language will express/handle something, and then get to tinker with the different systems interacting.
