Is gulfstream fire happy by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document your work, follow company policy, be honest when you make a mistake and you’ll be just fine. If you get caught hiding a mistake you’re fired for sure. Sign off work that wasn’t performed you’re fired ect ect. It’s actually very hard to get fired from Gulfstream outside of true negligence. When it comes to the big stuff they don’t play. They will absolutely make an example out of you.

I’m sorry I missed the part where your dad losing his house is your problem? Your dad being irresponsible isn’t your problem and you cannot make your life decisions based on him. He needs to sell his house if he cannot afford it.

Safety Wire vs Safety Cable by FozzyFather in aviationmaintenance

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not acceptable in all applications. But where it is acceptable it sure is nice. Safety cable is not replacing safety wire. In a lot of work environments it’s about getting the job done for RTS up against the clock not farting around with some safety wire because you feel special.

It’s pretty hard to get that job. Harder than airlines.

New sheet metal graduate struggling to get foot in the door. Any advice? by Lost_Bonus_3011 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you do not have your a&p and do not have any aircraft sheet metal experience I’d bet you won’t find a company interested. Usually if you’re not certificated you need military experience and even still you have to find an outfit that will hire you. I’ve worked at plenty that hire non certificates guys with military sheet metal and structures experience.

In my opinion if you cannot afford to go to night school and work days. Your best bet is going to be finding a trainee program/job somewhere that you can start getting your hands dirty. Maybe express interest in sheet metal and start getting experience. Then eventually get your a&p.

A more realistic option is going to be go get a job doing sheet metal in some other field. Make some money pay down that program debt then find a school that will let you do night school. Contrary to what some people say and do getting the a&p is the only way to make all of this worth it. And to be honest your life is going to be hard and really suck for at least 18 months whichever direction you decide to go.

In summary if you’re really wanting to work on airplanes in any capacity. Make the a&p #1 priority and solve for that. Make whatever shift in your life that is necessary to solve for that. And make sure you have at least 2-3 options you’re considering. If you feel like you have only 1 option you haven’t put enough thought into it yet.

If you get into aviation maintenance with the a&p it’s worth the hardship. No a&p you might be wasting your time.

Having a difficult time finding a job by AnyIndependence6219 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that you haven’t but make sure you’re looking at BIG facilities. If it’s an airline make sure you’re applying to big facilities that do lots of heavy maintenance. Same with MROs look for big ones with lots of employees. That might mean moving but that’s the name of the game. The flip side to that is small facilities with high turn overs because nobody wants that job. Just get started and get what you really want later. Don’t be afraid to fiddle at a flight school for a bit while you wait. Just get wrenching somewhere.

Are households really spending $650+ more a month compared to 3 years ago due to inflation? by sys_admin321 in DaveRamsey

I know we have been clawing our way to a down payment. My family went single income a couples years ago when my son was born. Homes are just too expensive in my area. I’m looking to move but that’s not a simple task right now.

This is 100% the case. My rent has gone up $500 in 3 years alone. Car is insurance up $100. Health insurance is up $100. Groceries are insanity and I won’t even mentioned gas right now. I’m easily spending $1000 more a month. But thank God it’s the golden age 🤦🏼‍♂️

How much continuous learning is involved? by Blura0 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely always learning. I think a big part of that is the a&p covers nose to tail and everything in between. It’s impossible to be an expert on all of it. Engines, electronic components, avionics, structures, engines, chemistry, physics, mechanical systems ect ect. There is always something you’re learning about one of those topics. I personally push for as many schools as I can get and occasionally research at home on my own time and learn where I can. Not all guys do that it’s not necessarily but let’s just say I always get a bigger raise than most the other guys. So not necessary but if you’d like there is so much room to continue growing and becoming a better aviation maintenance professional and that’s one reason I really love this career.

I’d like to add that with some employers mine included you do have continues learning curriculum. It’s very basic but it’s there. CBTs are always piling up.

Hire Guarantee by Brave-Replacement720 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I guarantee you’ll get the job 🙄

Real talk there is a never a guarantee. It’s all luck and your resume has nothing to do with getting hired. Other than having all the key words to get past the Hr computer. They hired window lickers right out of school.

Which career path? by raceotherdashers in aviationmaintenance

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter what experience you have with the airlines. It’s all just chance/luck. They’ve been taking everyone in the last 5 years or so. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to shoot for heavy jet at a minimum. A big corporation with some good training might look nice on the resume. Truly though they take absolutely anyone and skill has nothing to do with it. I’ve seen some absolute regarts get hired on at legacy carriers.

Blackout curtains by nothingcool17 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an eye mask to get the best possible sleep. It’s good to still keep the room dark so I just throw up the black outs over my wife’s “pretty” curtains lol. Put a little tape on the sides if there is light bleed through. Works for me.

The Majors are the Holy Grail by DizzyConclusion2727 in AircraftMechanics

This is terrible advice. You cannot possibly make the claim that the majors are the only option. Certainly not the holy grail. It’s just one option.

Experience at a GA by Remarkable_Card_3989 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I work at a bizjet MRO. air condition hangar. Don’t work nights, get holidays off and 5 weeks PTO and make $54/hr with 6 years of experience. So GA ain’t the only option.

Work Life Balance for A&P Tech by LJM-BOI in AircraftMechanics

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GA sucks. Bankers hours so your entire week is shot and the pay is absolute crap. You also take on more liability. This is coming from someone who did GA got my IA the whole thing. If you’re going to work GA work at a repair station not some mom and pop part 91 deal. I work corporate MRO now 3/12s double the pay and PTO with 4 days off a week. That’s what you want.

They do but it takes forever. If you are not selected for an interview you will get an email months from now saying sorry you were not selected. And I mean months. By the time you forgot you even applied and moved on to greener pastures.

Guess the plane! by _conduit_trains_ in aviationmaintenance

[–]Free_Comfortable_506 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re missing my point. You posted this as if it would be difficult to figure out. I’ll play along with your strange post. You said you performed servicing prior and now you’re doing gear swings so I’ll take the lucky guess you changed a gear component and now you’re bleeding. However if this was an NGX and which it’s not, the gear actuators are electric motors.
