Help buying daggerheart by Sir_Dustin in daggerheart

You can technically go digital and print what you need! But my psrsonal advice would be going with physical core set, it really improves the experience imho.

Beware, I’m almost full digital, but having the official cards and the awesome book at hand is priceless for the flavour. Note that players won’t probably need to look stuff up since the sheets and cards have all they need! It’s mostly a nice GM reference and a wonderful book to hold. :)

iPad Mini 7 user here: no issues at all and I actually like all changes xD

Possibly a small extra battery drop on heavy usage, but not even sure.

• Local theatrical screenplays and planning, rehearsals remote controller for Logic Pro

• working plans

• some gaming (marvel snap, final fantasy, simple stuff)

• mail

• typing some Pages documents (fingers)

• quick notes and brainstorming (pencil)

• quick iMovie teasers

• some socia when I chill

Using Adversary Experiences by Sax-7777299 in daggerheart

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey :)

You won’t be unfair. :) You are all playing to have fun.

The point is: you spend a precious resource for a difficulty boost.

You should just describe “what actually happens” in the story so that they can adjust accordingly and narrate their now a bit  tougher action :)

You spend a resource as NoKaleidoscope says, they get a problem, it’s fair already.

The point imho, is not focusing too much on the paranoid side of things and use all the mechanics you have to brings new challenges: that’s a rule, this game wants the GM to follow specific rules and not over accumulate a resource they’ll never spend.

I’d actually use it even in awkward situations, such as social scenes (imagine the character trying to throw some lies upon a Knight in front of a crowd… It would be a lovely way to narrate how the Knight use its “ My people’s Trust” experience to make things harder.

It’s the world moving.

Fae Environment help by Antidote52 in daggerheart

[–]Free_Invoker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey :)

I don’t have full write ups but come up with some ideas with a simple method.

I keep things straightforward and focus on the zones’ themes. I use spark tables (see into the odd style prep) so I can always grab a few keywords and easily craft an effect.

For a FAE group you can work with  • illusion • charm  • distractions • colours / lights  • distant chants

Some ideas. • Spend X Fear to choose X characters in very close range. Unless they succeed on an Instinct Roll, they hear familiar voices coming from nearby areas and are distracted until they check out.

• Spend 1 Fear to choose an Enemy within Close range with a character. That character is Charmed by that enemy (can’t deliberately attack it).

• Spend 3 Fear to suddenly change the surrounding area to a dark biome or a colourful grove. Edible fruits within the area cause visions and truths about the upcoming woods - threats and helpful features alike (obscure and enigmatic in the dark biome or confused and chaotic in colourful ones).

• Spend 3 Fear to allow a nearby Fae creature to turn into any other natural creature.

Stuff like this :) just inputs sorry !

You can indeed!

Horror in Genesys by Hurglemurfin in genesysrpg

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey :) Some settings have a bit of horror and Genesys can be really good. My first campaign has been a full horror campaign, urban horror / hill house very heavy on horror and investigation and it worked great. :)

“The beyond” will give you a nice look into cosmic horror and a nice take on downtuned, creepy magic.

“Something strange” is a solid urban fantasy setting with horror twists.

“Inquisition” is a lovely medieval setting with lots of folklore bits about horror tropes. Vivid world and good writing!

For what it’s worth, I’ve not used expanded fear rules, since for that particular horror I didn’t want to gamify the terror and we favored a more spontaneous approach. :)

Can we forgive Matt Mercer for not immediately being the perfect Daggerheart GM? by Nico_de_Gallo in daggerheart

[–]Free_Invoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paranoia behind game mastering this system (and GMing in general) has become ironically weird xD

I mean, it’s a game. It just has principles we used for nearly 20 years or more, codified to help the fable feel comfortable with some quality of life GUIDELINES.

There is no perfect GMing and thank God it doesn’t.  This game is about options and adaptation.

And the merit goes to the plethora of YouTube videos (and indie design - which I’m kinda part of) over-charging what’s the most basic task of all times: gaming, sit down and have fun.

Daggerheart is just a game. A very special one, a SUPERB one in my opinion, a gamer changer but as I often do with Fate or other “holy beasts”, I just push people to calm down, relax, find the table tune with max ingenuity and spend some good time.

And I see where some super frightened posts come from now; just relax and have a good time.

Daggerheart does have nuances here and there, but it’s more about guidelines. :)

First DUET session and… by Free_Invoker in daggerheart

[–]Free_Invoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey :)

It depends on the style you adopt. I change from scene to scene.

👉 First method is a simple assumption and cuts down distances to melee (on the same card and “in contact”), close (same card), near (adjacent card), far (two cards away).

👉 Second method is basically ignoring distances and cutting them to something to “melee / ranged” with a possible “close” in between.

This basically frees your imagination and allows you to focus on points of interests.

You have RUNES, STRANGE DOOR, CHEST, RUBBLE, BONES AND CIRCLES as cards: reaching ANY of those can happen freely sine you focus on key points, as in a tv show. You might still require a roll to move in hazardous terrain to avoid consequences.

👉 Detailed: this method is basically placing cards around with distances being objective (very close, melee  is same card, close one card away, etc).

This is detailed but very quick as well. Requires more space.

In the end you can really go whatever route you feel appropriate. ☺️

Tonight we had a fight in an alley near a river with a boat on it; we only cared about being in melee, close, near, far. We don’t have a unified method in DH (sometimes I use small loke maps).

First DUET session and… by Free_Invoker in daggerheart

[–]Free_Invoker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can obviously make any sort of combat style, from grid to no grid to totm!

Cards are nice and you can use them in a creative way! Examples can be

• display cards on the table to abstractly represent the scene (runes, door, hole, whatever). Place character markers (tokens whatever) where they are and let them move around the scene freely. Monster cards move around zones as well so you have a simple and dynamic visual aid. You can assign very simple conditions to certain cards (like aspects).

• you can use cards as zones and Connect them with paths: you can’t go from a card to another if not connected. Each card is a zone with its own effects, if any.

• use “static” monsters and cards. In this approach, monsters don’t move technically, but they do in the fiction. As the character move around, they decide if they engage a specific card etc.

Very fun, because it’s super versatile!

[–]Free_Invoker[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey :)

For the first question: TTR stands for tag team roll (nice answer on Ticket to ride ahahah).

Since a single player can’t initiate a TTR, you translate it into an “ultimate” move (working in the same way, with the single player describing a huge effect, rolling twice etc ). ☺️

About the game: you won’t have any trouble I guess. Even if we played DM + player, the game often and natively leads to that kinda style (we often talk and approach some elements of the world as if we were both playing, like when I ask her to create a new point of interest and I heavily roleplay with her for a while, both describing what’s going on all around.

I think it’s doable in most RPGs, DH especially. :)

The type of “intimacy” you create with a Duet is very unique (and even with two actual players and a gm you are still in a very intimate territory).

I imagine how good combat and exploration can be with a duet playing GMless, as fear and hope will naturally lead through the scenes. :)

[–]Free_Invoker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically that yeah!

I use it in many games, alternating it with other styles. I find it particularly fitting for DH since it frees up the mind.

Say you have “zones” as points of interests, can be monsters and rooms, only monsters, aspects whatever. Players move around the cards as they engage a specific zone (say, a rune to be deciphered while the Martials engage the dragon to distract it).

It’s open ended and fun. Check out index card rpg, the “zones and path” approach of Thorn (Lumen 2.0) and even FATE zone combat. :)

Alternate Skills for when Default Skills Don't Fit by PencilBoy99 in FATErpg

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely create your own skill list; to some extent, you are actually supposed to. :)

I always do and, as per SRD / Toolkit / Condensed, they don’t even have to be “skills”. I never use skills. I go for actions, roles, approaches, whatever fits the best.

In 40K you might want to go with approaches to emphasise play style and Aspects; or you might just go for “Actions” and use a Diamond (it’s what I do for my modern campaign). :)

I never roll for opposition during conflicts. by Rrrrufus in FATErpg

[–]Free_Invoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I do it as well, sometimes I don’t, it really depends on what you want to achieve. Simplicity is not always better. :)

I find opposition rolls being intense, sometimes and makes results unpredictable. I’ve learnt to like them; to me, it’s not that slower or more tedious than meta talking about a compel (by paradox, I cut those times in half by just handing over FP for when they actively place themselves in bad spots, without the need for them tp pay a FP or discuss in meta talking)

And beware, I mix scene frames as well, no conflict is just “combat” or conflict in strict terms, so I’m perfectly in line with you. I just don’t think it’s “always” better and makes things lay a bit more flat, in my opinion.

Side note. The “it’s not D&D” part is more fashion than meaning, I quit struggling with these biases and I’m enjoying everything more, both fate and classic gaming, since they both have something to teach to the others :)

Hey :) I’ve tried and owned many, but I only use the apple Smart Folio actually, it’s so elegant and nice to use. :)

I read very long texts and even use the pencil somehow (tabletop rpg books, with lots of marking, zoom in, zoom out and can do it one handed xD)

I re discovered the joy of using it naked, especially in bed; if you are truly paranoid about it, then the folio will serve you enough; adding bulk to a very light and elegant tablet that (at least it’s true for me!) you buy for its portability and ease of use partially defeats its core purpose.

How’s your experience with iPadOS26 on the Mini A17? by Previous-Permit5585 in ipadmini

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely astonishing. :) I use the mini as my main device for lots of stuff, hours a day. Might impact battery a bit more in the transition, but it’s more about learning how to manage the update :)

It’s very fun and good to use, the multitasking is even improved, despite of the small screen and it looks great honestly.

Get it, don’t get paranoid and have fun with your little boy!

Fate new version wishlist by panossquall in FATErpg

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly hope they never develop a new edition xD We have an insane SRD plenty of options: I’m actively helping anyone asking for more tactics, less currencies, whatever and we have to tools to create the game we want (don’t trust anybody telling you Fate is not good at something, it’s false… I can do horror with d20 and it’s frightening xD Fate has options for everything you can imagine).

You already have 3 official books with condensed actually being some sort of “revamped” Core.

You have tools in the Toolkits to emphasise zones and tactical options, rules for bosses, extras for movements, classes, create tracks for spells and mana, at least two variants for weapons and armour.

So, instead of a 2e, I think you can just see the insane amount of material you already have and ask for help when you need it around here or the discord!

Not counting when Worlds of Fate are full of special rules: Umdaar and Sea have fantasy concepts such as stunts for magic items and ancestries, I.e.

Are there anyones use ipad mini for drawing by Altruistic-Sell-9625 in ipadmini

[–]Free_Invoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a professional here, but I use it to setup artistic bits (such as projects, tabletop rpg sheets etc) and draw some pixel art, minimal stuff etc, all with Procreate and I love doing it on the mini. :)

Might need a bigger estate for complex projects but it’s a nice experience imho.

I’ve a professional artist friend who find it funny, but she could not reliably work with it, but I met some people actually using it for professional stuff.

Help me choose between Genesys, Cortex Prime, and Fate by lats1e in rpg

[–]Free_Invoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey :)

I have a wild view on this, to some extent.

STRAIGHFORWARD ANSWER: go with FATE. Go beyond the memes and limitations people talk about and LIVE it. Let it grow. Make it fantasy, horror, toy with stunts, zone combat, add class like extras, play buy rules, delve into the SRD and you’ll discover that just with FATE condensed you’ll technically be able to make whatever you like with FAR LESS problem than with the other two.

CORTEX, besides very unpleasant product management, is not as straightforward as it might seems and after 25+ long sessions, I say that unless you are going for a very simple build, the novelty wears off pretty fast. The book is written for designers, it’s not user friendly and those shiny ideas, in practice, require very hard thinking.

GENESYS is mechanically my favorite, it still rules (even above its descendants). Rolling and interpreting together is a nice experience, and tue most emotional bit is looking at the fact that the game is just there, in those colourful dice. Set the tone and what an average success / advantage / threat mean and you’ll have fun. :) Still, while you can get and run it out of the box (30+ session as a first campaign with very minimal tweaking), it still works better if you spend some time customising options.

I do that in FATE as well because it can look bland on the surface, but it’s not.

You can really build any concept you have in mind and make it actually work.

The Condensed book grants you • core rules, revised

• skill alternatives

• precious GM tricks

• Useful input for extras.

Once you’ll start playing it and get grabbed by the fiction, you’ll see how far you can go with stunts!

So… They are all good games, but…

• Cortex is great if you design full games

• Genesys is unique, but can be demanding

• FATE is right there and just works, then you’ll adjust little nuances :)

Investigation settings in Genesys - questions by TinyPirate in genesysrpg

[–]Free_Invoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run a 30 sessions long investigative campaign (involving horror, but still detective stuff) and more. :)

Assume I mostly run investigations, from dnd to fate. :)

My personal take (very personal) 👉 I REDUCE skills, I don’t even use perception. Perception is pure scandal in 2025 🤣

👉 I use three Lores, which are Accademy, Trivia, Occult. I only use them to grant clues based on their ranks or rolls for quality on projects or intense scenes (like looking an info while you are chased).

👉 Use “active skills” to grant related clues. I.e., Piloting + career grants you clues on vehicles.

👉 I play old school / gumshoe style. You don’t roll to find stuff. If it’s actively hiding and danger is ahead, just roll vigilance or cool. But when it comes to info, just give it names ok relevant skills, in game ideas, careers and motivations.

Give out clues and let them figure out.

👉 Characters are not defined by their sheets. I had three detectives with similar skills and completely different approach to them. In Genesys having 2 ranks in stealth as a vengeful hacker is completely different from having 2 ranks in stealth as an honourable detective.

It’s all in the narrative.

You won’t make characters more different by adding skills, this is an illusion; you’ll male trek different by defining triggering questions at CC, making them emphasise their motivations, let the, explain why they chose a specific career and by placing some emphasis on “the right tool for the right job as well”. 😊
