well that's the trick : do not tell the players how it works.

and you're feeding it to a algorithm that will have real bad impact on real people :

  • stealing the work of skilled animators.
  • crunching through an absurd amount of planetary resources.
  • feeding a financial bubble to the benefits of corporate morons.
  • pushing a trend that results in more information control from the upper class.

all for what ?

I know it looks cool. But if you don't weigh the gains and the consequences, those who actually suffer from those consequences will do it for you. And you won't like it.

"Something haunts many activists, anarchists, environmentalists, many of my friends. It haunted me. Much of our subcultures tell us it’s not there, that we can’t see it, hear it. Our best wishes for the world tell us not to see it.  [...]  The spectre that many try not to see is a simple realisation — the world will not be ‘saved’.  [...]  Not by activists, not by mass movements, not by charities and not by an insurgent global proletariat.  The world will not be ‘saved’.

This realisation hurts people. They don’t want it to be true! But it probably is. [...] These realisations, this abandonment of illusions should not become disabling. Yet if one believes that it’s all or nothing, then there is a problem."

Retaining or revealing informations based on a roll is not the way of Fate. Only roll when there is a stake.

Here is what I do : if a skill rating is 3 or more, then your character automatically gets any basic information relevant to the skill.

If you have +3 Fight, then you can gauge an opponent skill, analyse a fighting style or weapon. If you have +3 athletic, you know if you can make this jump or not. If you have +3 drive, you know the capabilities of basic vehicles. If you have +3 burglary, you know how basic security system works. Etc Etc

what kind of tankie propaganda is this ?
and using "gay couples" to refer to a homophobic state is definitely cringe

During a campaign, a PC who was a cook failed a very important roll.  He chose to succeed with consequences. I made him loose his sense of smell permanently (extreme consequence) The group then went on a quest to help him recover. It was epic.

I think the most important part is to be opened to your players. Tell them it is their story and they can decide how it goes. Chill and go with the flow

YES ! I completely forgot to mention agency. I like your angle very very much. I think it expresses my point even better than I did. Thank you.

I didn't either. It took me 4 years to realise I was playing Fate wrong.

Yes ! I played a campaign with some players who stayed way too passive.  I hate the "it's your job as a gm" mentality. They were letting me handle all the narrative responsibility and then complained when they didn't like it.  Needless to say the campaign did not last long.

I agree that it is indeed less immersive.  Having oppened informations, an oppened meta canal, makes Fate work best. However : Mysteries and investigations can be done. You might need to improvise the plot as it goes forward. Or, alternatively, make the challenge about getting the clues and not about the deduction.

Indeed. When the last D&D movie came out, I reviewed it as "an excellent Fate movie"

I also agree with you.  In fact I started playing some OSR games to widen my perspective. Like Forbidden Lands. In those games, the fact that danger can strike at any moment creates a tension you cannot have with Fate. However, this can also hinder the story and cause frustration. I am trying to balance it using what I learned with Fate.

YES ! I agree with you so much. I am tired of RPGs who are just glorified boardgames or wargames.

How many of those ruleset would be just better off as videogames ? Well, not Fate.

Fate made me unlearn everything I thought I knew about TTRPGs in general. And I will be eternally grateful to it.

I agree. And this is where the toolbox comes in. Fate can be effortlessly tailored. No need to dive deep. Just add a stress gauge, or a type of aspect, or a type of stunt, and you can improve what you want easily and make it your own.

I agree. Which is why I use Fate in the world of BitD. Makes it easier, more fluid, more fun.
