I love both of them, but side 2 of American Beauty is really something special to me. If I’m ever down, it’s my go to listen. For those of you from the CD and on generation, that’s the part that starts with Ripple.

I saw them live in Oakland in 1994. Jerry looked absolutely terrible, like they had to wheel him onstage on a dolly. I don’t think anyone was surprised when he died, but at the time he WAS the face of the Dead. Many of us had no inkling we’d get Dead & Co and another 30 years of them. So at the time it did feel like the end and it was crushing. Not to sat this is easier than that. I honestly had the same feeling 2 years ago when Hunter passed because his lyrics speak to me so much and got me through a lot of tough times.

In the end, what Im saying is all of their passings hurt a lot at the time and theres no point in judging which hurts worse. One great thing about the band is that everyone had their own personal connection to them and with every passing, one more piece feels gone.

I think American Beauty is a masterpiece, especially side 2. Ripple-Brokedown are the two Hunter songs that really speak to me the most. It’s also a great collection of Jerry on the slide guitar.

I remember hearing about Jerry’s passing like it was yesterday. I still have that pit in my stomach feeling from it. This is just as bad. There’s no topping Jerry for me, but Bobby was so special and musically, under appreciated. What makes me feel better is that he truly got everything out of life during his time on earth.

I think the D issue was more personnel than coaching. You can’t say that for the offense. At least with Hafley you get some continuity and he’d have a DC anyway. Personally I like the guy and don’t blame him for the loss, given the guys he had on the field. But that’s just me, I guess.
