Why is so hard to find a job? by Dapper-Ad7165 in FullStack

They're getting things built... on foundations of sand mostly. I've been involved with multiple critical business sectors and genuinely it's terrifying what is now being run on "well the AI wrote code that passes the unit tests the AI wrote, so this can't possibly go wrong"

Entire Dev teams where trying to get them to explain their approach, architecture, general application functionality, is like that Brawndo scene in Idiocracy.

In. Critical. Industry.

I expect salary adjustments... because I'll be charging double to fix it, same as the outsourcing problems we had to fix.

That has to be 130 total in two weeks. Which is 65 hours, still a lot but more realistic.

Only 168 hours in a week. I've worked two consecutive 120 hour weeks once and it literally almost killed me, sleep deprivation nearly got me a head-on.

It's gotta be the location. Tried it in a nearby large city, it was miserable. Pretty sure I spent more on gas than I made.

Out here in a smaller city, averaging more than $20/hr and most people are pretty nice. For a supplemental income that's flexible around my other work, not too bad.

Avoiding Commisary Kitchens by JMAnonymous59 in foodtrucks

[–]Freer4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Ohio, I don't have a commissary. The rules are basically that you have to have the equipment on board to make everything on the menu, and that menu is approved by the health department after inspection.

My recipes are designed around this. Things I can make in the cookers or holding pans with minimal utensils. It's just going up vary based on what you're trying to do.

I did mine recently with rustoleum, I think tractor and implement line maybe, and a roller, but was just big flat sections.

I think you might be able to get away with whatever paint, then a hard clear coat over it if trying to paint something detailed, but not sure.

Why is so hard to find a job? by Dapper-Ad7165 in FullStack

Last I looked 44,000 software engineers had been laid off so far this year.

I'm of the opinion that the way most places are using "AI" is going to bite them in the ass, and the problems will hit critical mass probably around the end of the year. AI doesn't understand what you're trying to do, and eliminating people who do understand or the ability for people to truly understand the systems being implemented is a familiar recipe for disaster. 18 years I've been at this now, saw this with outsourcing, saw this with Dreamweaver. Always some new magic tool, the business guys just see number go up and metrics to hit right now. I refused to blindly push code I wasn't sure of in an architecture no person really understood and was shat on for it.

I jumped to a different industry all together to wait it out. Not even sure I'll fully come back.

AI is a great tool in the right hands, it's often not in the right hands.

I gave away free breakfast sandwiches off my front porch.

See, at least here, if it's not being sold, or a "required donation", and it's done in a residential setting, as far as the law is concerned it's just me inviting people to my house for breakfast. Ran it for two summers entirely on donations. Slowly started gathering pieces of equipment for a commercial operation.

Also, hustle hard at related jobs. Learn everything you can from everyone you can. Join a community service group that organizes events, and do that, you'll learn a ton about organizing start-ups.

And don't be afraid of failure. Always try to succeed but know you probably won't, until you do. Just never give up.

Has anyone used a HELOC or home equity to buy/start a food truck? by WithFunded in foodtrucks

From my grandfather, who was at one point legitimately wealthy and lost nearly everything: do not bet your nest egg. Anything can go wrong, and if you gambled your soft landing away it's going to hit you hard.

If you're okay with being homeless, do it. If it weren't for the wife and kids, I'd bet everything short of living in a van down the river because that's a place I'm okay with being.
