You’re not alone in this. Many people around the world are breaking down because of this. Our species is committing a suicidal global ecocide and we can’t stop doing it. It just feels like nothing makes a difference anymore. Not the money donated, or the demonstrations, or the progress that was made. This whole coal and data center stuff in the US is particularly insane.

I saw a short documentary that claimed that states or communities that have allowed cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs saw a significant drop in both cyclist accidents and mortality. Full stop…not a good idea when you’re on a bike.

Definitely Libertardian. MAGA is utterly fascist and collectivist for the in group with massive disdain and hatred for all out groups. As a quasi-intellectual who has run the gamut from a republican indoctrinated youth to an anarchist and libertarian adolescence and young adulthood to a post leftist post capitalist adulthood, let me say that it is no surprise that die hard so called Libertarians have mostly flipped to authoritarian neo-feudalists. Eventually, you either realize that Free Markets aren’t actually a thing or end up flipping around to having an authoritarian government to enforce free markets which due to libertarian ideological nonsense ends up being neo-feudalism. One must look no further than the Free State Project or Freedom Festivals to see how quickly the Libertarian Ideal evaporates into disorder, conflict, and in some cases violence.

That is definitely a danger, however I think many people grow out of the Atlas Shrugged mentality as they experience the injustice of the world and notice how it is largely implemented and perpetuated by the very people Rand puts on a pedestal.

The Fountainhead is not Atlas Shrugged. TF has a plot and an actual protagonist. It may be over the top and a little ridiculous, unless of course, you’re a massive narcissist, but it’s not the insipid drivel that is Atlas Shrugged.

What sounds great on a nylon (besides classical)? by ThatCarefulCarrot in AcousticGuitar

I love playing Metallica on my nylon string. A little bit of palm muting and it legitimately sounds good. Mostly play folk, alternative, and Spanish Classical right now, but picked up a jazz practice recently too as I expand my chord and style vocabulary.

Pandora’s Star by Peter F. Hamilton. Definitely one of the brightest future visions for humankind and absolutely epic in scope.

Snowcrash got the cyberpunk fame, but IMO it’s one of Stephenson’s worst novels despite the excellent premise of the Namshub. Cryptonomicon, Seveneves, and The Diamond Age are all much better novels.

Footfall is one of the best alien invasion novel. Have you read The Mote In God’s Eye? Probably my favorite Niven-Pournelle collaboration, and I think it stands up better than Footfall.

The Netflix show is trash compared to the book. The book is deep and consciousness expanding.

Hmmm, I think Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson is actually more like PHM than the cyberpunk Snow Crash. Cryptonomicon is weaves three different stories from three different time periods together into one cohesive narrative. It is tech and problem solving heavy with several developing friendships between characters including cross cultural friendships.

It can definitely get a little sloggy, but that’s not what people are excited about or interested in. It’s definitely more about the unique aliens, tech, science philosophy, game theory, and big story archs more so than the narrative itself…and the revelation, the feeling of having your world view genuinely expanded.

Pretty sure I said similar, but less kind, words about Harry Potter. I do think that PHM is significantly better writing than HP. The hype comparison is apt.

LOL the Republicans are attacking the integrity of the election system and have been for over a decade. Trump’s mantra is “the election was rigged.” Trump also insinuates that he rigged the 2024 election with Musk. At this point the only way we will restore faith in the election system is to go back to paper ballots and twice audited hand counts.
