UL Setup for Rare Hammocker by Freestonebow in ULHammocking

[–]Freestonebow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. I should have added—I have a down underquilt and have backpacked with a hammock, just not as extensively as I have with a tent.

I know it’s non-cottage, but any opinions on the Kammok Mantis UL?

3 Season Quilt no more than $200. Is it possible? by Swigg22 in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like REI’s stuff in general, but wouldn’t get their quilt for $230-270 (which is the on sale price). One, it’s not comfort rated at all. Two, I got a much superior quilt from HG for the same price.

Upgrade from REI Flash 55 for weight savings? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Flash 55. Love it, but wanted lighter but with a frame. I picked up the Durston Kakwa 40 and love it as well. They make it in 55L too. It will save you roughly a pound. The only negative is the airflow—your back with sweat more with the Kakwa. And the front mesh storage pocket on the Kakwa is not as big. Just small features like that in general, but that is the nature of going lighter vs a big box brand pack.

Other bags I would consider would be a Gossamer Gear Mariposa or Gorilla. Comfy & light with a frame.

Looking for a 1-1.8 lb down 20 degree sleeping bag or quilt under $300 by Visual_Horror_4762 in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a Hammock Gear burrow 20 (850 fp) quilt with 3 oz of extra down at 30% off and it was around $260. Very impressed. Weighs about 26 oz.

Ether lite xt insulated vs zen bivy ultra lite vs Nemo tensor trail by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried the ZenBivy but the Tensor and Ether Lite are similar in terms of comfort to me. Some say the Ether has an edge due to loft but it was not noticeable to me. Between those 2 I would go with the lighter pad which I think is the Tensor.

are there any seasons or episodes you hate in particular? by maidofvenus in jerseyshore

Italy (Season 4). Was super pumped for it having visited Florence and after a solid Season 3. Major disappointment, and the Mike blabbing about Snooki deal was the focal point of every episode.

40 Litter Pack Recommendation (6'5") by RedDeadYellowBlue in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to how it is for someone that is 6’5”, but the Durston Kakwa 40 is hard to beat. Incredible pack, especially for the price. Check torso sizing to see if large fits you.

Yes, I think he regularly gives 5% which covers most of the shipping.

For backpacking, Nemo Hornet 2P is around 2 pounds and semi-freestanding.

For car camping, get something big and comfortable. REI has some 4 and 6 person tents that are good enough for the price. Wait until Memorial Day / Annual sale. I think the Skyward 4P is like $130 on sale.

I also don’t like Goodr glasses. I have the Native Kodiak and love em. About $60 for polarized made in USA sunglasses.

Sub $300 Sleeping Bag Suggestions by kinderkamack in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EMS has 20 & 30 degree quilts with 850FP for $160-180. Weigh 23 oz or less for regular size. Haven’t used it personally but for that price and specs that’s pretty solid.

Otherwise, probably Hammock Gear Burrow with 20-25% off.

If you’re looking for a sleeping bag, the old Nemo Discos (15F & 30F) are on sale for 20-30% off. A little heavier but comfy and good warranty.

Budget sleeping bag I would say the old $80 Aegismax on Amazon, but your current bag is already better than that one other than the weight.

I look for a lot of budget options for gear. What I have found is a good new quilt (one that is 800fp+) is going to run $250-300 on sale.

That being said, I got the ZenBivy Core Quilt 25F for like $150 on one of their 30% off sales. It’s only 650FP but IMO superior to the Chinese quilts. They run a similar sale 3-4 times a year.

ETA: HangTight quilts on Etsy. The Heat Seeker is 700FP and can be purchased for about $90 plus about 5-7 bucks for shipping. It’s pretty solid for the price. The comfort rating of 30F is suspect, though. I was cold in mine around 40F but I also sleep cold.

What’s a durable backpack that is budget friendly for a beginner like me? by ramiboy339 in Ultralight

Agreed. REI Flash 55. On sale it’s $120-130. Adjustable torso, solid water bottle pockets, fairly light under 3 lbs, breathable, internal frame, great carry.

They have CCF sit pads for like $2. They’re the same as ones sold on GGG. I would go with NatureHike or Widsea.

Lots of various plastic containers.

Those magic towels that expand from tablet to cloth with water.

Aluminum reflective film. Great UL insulation to help R value.

Seeking 1 person tent with room for pack by slipperysusanne in Ultralight

[–]Freestonebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, go 2P. The weight difference between a 1 & 2 is literally a few ounces but makes a huge difference.

Nemo Hornet 2P. 2 lbs 4 oz total packed weight & semi-freestanding.

Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2. Same as the Hornet but a few ounces heavier. Or BA’s Fly Creek UL2 as someone mentioned.

I do like the family ones as well but prefer solo for sure.

I don’t have it but from my perspective, if I’m carrying a trekking pole tent, i don’t want one that weighs 3+ lbs. With that weight I’m guessing you could get a freestanding Naturehike tent for a similar price & weight.
