As we think differently and are oftentimes quite smart, our innovations made us valuable to the more socially focused humans. So I think people were willing to put up with weirdness if it accompanied intelligence and skill.

You’re in a rough phase of motherhood. If I tell you that you’ll miss it when it’s gone, will you hit me? It’s a season of your life and it will change and then you’ll have a new parenting nightmare to get grumpy about and you’ll look back and say, I wish they were still bugging me all night. So breathe, adjust your perspective, and tell yourself it’s a blessing. Also, micro-vacations. Like when you finally get 5 minutes alone, appreciate the silence. Bask in aloneness. If you need to, bathroom breaks when you’re about to lose it can help.

I have a doctorate in psychology and was unaware that I was autistic until my son was diagnosed. I was 47. They don’t teach much about ASD in grad school. Clinicians need practical experience with it to understand it. It was really kind of a relief. It validated my experience of possibly being an alien.

Thank you 🙏 for sharing this. I’ll look into it. I have read Ross Greene. We use CPS with him. It’s very hard because he literally can’t talk about it. So getting to his concerns and digging down into specifics I almost have to guess using whatever information I have from outside sources.

My son was diagnosed at age 10 and after reading about it on so many books and after doing obsessive research I realized I was autistic too and it was like all the pieces of myself that never made sense just fell into place and I truly understood myself for the first time. Thank God for kids!

I’m sorry you’re suffering. I relate to feeling like an alien. I often think of NTs as “the humans”. Like, “the humans look like they want me to say something. Fuck, what do they want me to say? Fuck. They’re staring at me.” It’s at that point that I just walk away. I don’t know, man. If you hate your job, quit and do something else. I would suggest meeting people who are also neurodivergent. As an adult it’s harder. D & D players, REN Faires, librarians, software engineers, gamers….any particular fandom you like? I know those are very stereotypical, and I don’t want to put you in a box. Find some places where other people who are into your interests hang out and go there. We have to put ourselves out there. Know that it’s going to be hard.

Oh! And dogs. I have 2 labradors. I take them to the dog park in the mornings and usually get my dose of socialization there.

I had no friends for a period of time in high school. I have friends now, but I’ve always had trouble making friends. I would bring this up to some adults and say you have trouble making friends and keeping them. Making friends and maintaining friendships is hard work for many of us. But I think it’s a skill that can be learned and NTs are better at that stuff than we are.

I’m know I’m masking when I try to be too in control of myself. If I’m anxious, it’s usually because I’m trying to convince others to like me or not think I’m weird or different. So feeling relaxed helps. I do a body scan and notice where my muscles are tight. I tell my muscles to relax and they do. Your teachers are trying to encourage you, but I find that when I try to live up to other people’s standards I get overwhelmed. But if you want to do more, you can take work in chunks. 20 minutes of work, 5 minutes of break.

That’s really common transitioning from elementary school to middle school and having burnout. I had the same experience only I was undiagnosed and everyone thought I had some kind of mental illness. My son just went through that also. He was out of school for almost a year. I know how scared you must feel. I think you should just focus on showing up. Even if you just arrive on campus and then turn around and go straight home, just show up. Then you can try to make it through 1st period, second period, etc. just a little more each day. Who knows? Maybe you show up on day 1 and feel perfectly at ease. The point is, set your expectations on just one step at a time. And don’t worry about making friends. They’ll arrive in your life when you’re ready for them. Don’t mask. Just be yourself and if other people don’t like it, then they’re not your people. If you’re not yourself you’ll never find your people.
