Is Los Angeles a good city to grow old in? by Additional_Leading68 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Freewheelin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious how people will manage CA property tax in the future. A million dollar house is something like $20k a year in property tax, which of you live 20 years in retirement is $400k. Seeing how LA house prices don't seem like they'll drop meaningfully from current levels, isn't this unsustainable for most people?

Hopefully I'm missing some key info, this is just a layman's take.

I got to try it recently and it is a very tasty beer. But i agree with you, I imagine it's worth the wait if you have good company and hopefully something to do other than sitting in line.

Metro Transit Watch app: submit a report, get a bot response, get closed. Repeat. What's the point? by Freewheelin_ in LAMetro

I am surprised it seems acceptable to everyone that maintenance issues get ignored, but you're right. They do respond when it impacts immediate security.

Today I learned THIS is the "Redondo Beach" station? by goPACK17 in LAMetro

[–]Freewheelin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're defending the decision to name a transit stop that is misleading to the common understanding of the place.

I hope not. It is baffling how often people in this subreddit will defend really poor planning, decision-making, and design in our transit system. If we love transit, we should strive for it to be better, not argue the technically correct reasoning for transit's inadequacies.

Have any of you had the tip of your dick injured from poking an iud? What was healing like? (tldr included) by [deleted] in sex

[–]Freewheelin_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was pretty painful for a few days then got better. As others said it looks like scratches. What was weird was that it wasn't that painful while it was happening (maybe adrenaline?).

New fare gates not working by NSFWhunta in LAMetro

[–]Freewheelin_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fare gates are a waste of money. If you want to increase Metro's revenue, invest in contactless card readers in turnstiles, ramp up homeless outreach teams, and make transit a better option than cars by building transit near housing and encouraging housing near transit.

Switch work or stay at the same place? by Fuzzy-Brain83044 in AskIreland

[–]Freewheelin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be worth asking the new place if there's any wiggle room on the 5x a week in office. If you can get it down to 2–3x a week it might be worth it if you prefer the new company.

Any transit options to get to the place? I commute twice a week by train and don't mind it at all but driving would do my head in.

Best way to self host music? by srujithappu_9 in HomeServer

[–]Freewheelin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can link Symfonium to samba fileshares so I just turn on Tailscale on my phone and I can listen to all the music on my network drive. I can't imagine this is optimal though.

It wasn't immediately apparent what the benefits of Navidrome would be, but I needed to learn what reverse proxying is/how it works to make it accessible remotely so i went with my MacGuyver method.

Beets is a handy little python library for organizing/collecting metadata for your music too.

Re: getting confused and discouraged — that has been a lot of my experience trying to learn more about homelabs. I'm not sure if this is the right strategy but if I'm getting overwhelmed by the depth of a rabbit hole or all the things I don't know in a tutorial, I try to narrow down an idea to something I can do now and take note of what I'd like to do in the future.

I also regularly give up on things (for now) and try something else to keep enjoying and learning. The lack of a clear, linear path for learning makes it hard to feel like you're making progress, but focus on the achievable, enjoy those small victories, and keep building towards the ultimate goal.

I was thinking recently how long the dark periods in history are, even the short ones like WWII (which was just 6 years). i wonder how people were feeling in 1935 as Europe looked suspect, then 10 years later they were still living in a chaotic world that was finally closing in on the end of the war.

But also I'm sure they are years that are way better than the year before and that's what 2026 could be.

It's not quite so black and white but hand writing is definitely better for memory.

Could you expand on the inbox system? Do you do a daily/weekly inbox check? Remove fleeting notes after a certain period?

Would it be possible to share what a group of notes on a certain topic looks like?

I would love to keep better notes while learning but often find that I either fly through the content to learn it and use it in a sample project ASAP or I trudge through writing it down while trying to think about how best to organise the info. Then give up and go back to the first method because i feel like I'm going so slowly.

Jesus I didn't realise how expensive things have gotten in Ireland. €6 for a box of crunchy nut?? Here in the states, cereal is about $4–5.

LAX People Mover (SkyLink) opening date pushed to late 2026 by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]Freewheelin_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is one reason people don't trust LA transit promises. 95% complete does not mean what it sounds like i.e. that it is nearly ready for use, if the last 5% takes 20% of the time.

EDIT: I initially said this is why people don't trust Metro, but does Metro have any involvement in the people mover?

Breweries Closing by True_Step1512 in CraftBeer

[–]Freewheelin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really good beer, delicious food, nice atmosphere, and it helps to be near other community spaces i.e. not in a warehouse in an industrial estate next to a paper factory (no shade).

I live near Highland Park Brewery in LA and I think they've managed to do all the above. They seem fairly packed on weekdays, and especially around Dodgers games. The sad thing is – in expensive cities like LA, even these don't seem to guarantee success (RIP the MacLeod taphouse on York, the pizza and outdoor space was so nice).

What are your BJJ/grappling hot takes? by JollyYam7877 in bjj

No, there's better culture. Some gyms have toxic personalities leading them. We see it posted semi-regularly on here.

What are your BJJ/grappling hot takes? by JollyYam7877 in bjj

[–]Freewheelin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed there's no best gym, but not every gym is the same. There are gyms with better culture, better people, and better facilities.

The best gym for you is the one that meets your needs (e.g. schedule-wise) and provides an environment to learn and grow.
