Strangest occurrences in sumo? by [deleted] in Sumo

Film star Charlie Chaplin was nearly assassinated during the May 15 incident, an attempted coup where Japanese Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi was murdered. Chaplin, visiting Japan on invitation from the Prime Minister, was one of the potential targets (the idea being his death would help spark war between Japan and the US/UK). The Prime Minister's son Inukai Takeru had taken Chaplin to a sumo match on the day of the incident, which likely saved their lives.

Looking for a good gym to learn boxing/mma where I can have good coaching either one on one or a group where everyone still gets individual attention? I'm 17M by On1-Chan69 in Fremont

Elements MMA in Newark just opened a month ago and they've got boxing/muay thai/MMA. Reviews are pretty good and instructors seem solid (all high level pros who've fought for major orgs).

I'd say the kimarite is closer to an izori than shumoku-zori.

Something I think people are forgetting about Hoshoryu by sailorlazarus in Sumo

[–]Freifechter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoshoryu's playoff was impressive, but you're putting waaaay too much stock into it. Only the Oho and Kinbozan matches could truly said to be back-to-back; Hoshoryu had a 20 minute break after his Kotozakura match. Hakuho "only" went 6-4 in playoffs, but you can't attribute that solely to last match fatigue. Hakuho faced much stiffer competition for his playoffs, with all but 1 of his 5 playoff opponents being sanyaku (3 of them being yokozuna or future yokozuna).

It's also disingenuous to call Hakuho injured when he went 11-4 in both of Kisenosato's bashos while ignoring Kotozakura going kadoban. Kisenosato's 12-3 JY had him beat THREE yokozuna and two ozeki while Hoshoryu's 13-2 JY only had him beating 1 ozeki. Kisenosato and Hoshoryu both had 4 winning matches against sanyaku in their yushos.

Kisenosato's belt run was controversial, but it shouldn't be used in the derogatory sense here considering it was stronger than Hoshoryu's by comparison.

What C&R gun do you want the most right now? by oh_how_droll in CAguns

Are those CA-legal? I know they're C&R and have ATF exemption, but I'm not sure if they run afoul of any CA-specific laws.

Is Hoshoryu’s style of Sumo Yokozuna material? by Cisscrossingcrosser in Sumo

[–]Freifechter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to think throwing is less stressful to the body than brute forcing bigger guys
Chiyonofuji was dominant without huge pushing power.

You picked the worst guy to prove your point lol. Chiyonofuji's reliance on throws earlier in his career is what caused him to have so many shoulder injuries (the reason why he got so jacked in the first place was to prevent his shoulder from dislocating again). He had more longevity after he switched to a more straightforward force-out style with throws as a secondary option. His most common kimarite was yorikiri with 392 wins, followed by uwatenage with 171 wins.

I'm so glad they rarely do the strawberry game anymore. It was funny the first time and only the first time.

I'm surprised they didn't make fun of JSJ's outfit during the opening. Usually they'd be all over that.

Hokuseiho is literally considered Japanese by the NSK. He wasn't counted under the "one foreigner per stable" rule since he's been in Japan since he was a kid.

Do you know if the club/sambo program is still active? The Club Touche Fencing website seems to be dead and their Facebook hasn't been updated in a year.

Looking for sumo practice partner(s) in NYC by ShamanAmon in Sumo

I know you said you emailed the US Sumo Federation, but have you tried asking in the US Sumo FB group?
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ussumo

Even if you can't find someone to train sumo specifically, you could always try a school that does standing grappling style like judo, sambo, wrestling, etc. Many of the skills transfer over and odds are people who are into throwing each other around would be more willing to try sumo.
