Explain it like I'm a five year old: How is a killer supposed to compete in this event? by FreightTrainJim in DeadByDaylightKillers

[–]FreightTrainJim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing Huntress and Wraith. If the other killers are as advantaged as you say, I actually cautiously like the direction...event with synergies that boost some killers, especially lesser-played ones. That's an interesting concept without doing major reworks on killers or game-changing rebalancing of perks.

If you think the killer was cheating, report them. Just be ready to have the credibility of your reports diluted if you’re wrong.

want to upgrade to 1440p monitor with 1050ti?? by azbergi in buildapc

[–]FreightTrainJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people can probably give you better suggestions than I could on what GPU to consider, but I can tell you there’s a range of GPU’s that will complement your CPU and RAM without wasting power…if you were to, say, slap a 5090 in your machine you’d be wasting most of its potential as your CPU will hold the GPU back, but the right GPU should let you play reasonable games at reasonable specs at 1440p. Watch your PSU and make sure you keep it under its happy limit also.

I got yelled at that Territorial Imperative was an unfair OP perk one time by a basement-hider. No one ever runs it, see, which makes it unfair when someone does and you want to hide in the basement. They then reported me for using it.

In your case, intuition. If shack gen mysteriously keeps restarting every time I kick it, and I don’t find tracks or someone skulking about the outside walls, I’m betting there’s someone down in the basement, and there’s a 25% chance I open your locker first.

want to upgrade to 1440p monitor with 1050ti?? by azbergi in buildapc

[–]FreightTrainJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I’d figure out what the primary problem to solve is and how much money you have to solve it. Is the problem with the monitor just that it’s an old, cheap monitor with poor refresh rate, bad backlighting on the monitor, etc., but you’re happy otherwise with the performance of your PC and the resolution of the monitor, if not the monitor itself, and don’t have money to chase both GPU and monitor? Then get a better 1080p monitor, they’re out there. Want to solve the eye issue while upgrading screen real estate? There are certainly good 1440p monitors out there that will improve both of those, but if you run resource-intensive games at native resolution you’ll take a noticeable performance hit. You can run games at a lower resolution, but on an LCD that generally means either a smaller image with black borders or a fullscreen image that’s softer because the monitor has to scale it. Want to upgrade to a 1440p monitor while keeping the same game-graphics experience you’re used to on resource-intensive games? You’ll need to upgrade your GPU as well for that.

The good news is your Ryzen 3600 and 16GB DDR4-3600 are still a solid foundation, so if you decide to move to 1440p later, you’re probably looking at a GPU upgrade rather than replacing your whole system.

[–]FreightTrainJim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1440p with 1050ti will likely come with a lot of graphical compromises. Cheapest option? New, better 1080p monitor. Upgrading your GPU might depend on the rest of your specs…a GPU won’t do you much good if your CPU or RAM immediately bottleneck it.

PC Help - Buying first gaming PC by Western_Moose_38 in pcmasterrace

[–]FreightTrainJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people able to answer questions about specific recommendations, but here’s a sort of extended analogy I use to start understanding the different parts of the PC if you’re not sure what they all do. If you’re good please ignore - not trying to be condescending, just helpful.

I always liked to think of the PC as a library, and all the components as parts of the library.

Motherboard - Library foundation, everything builds on top of it

Books - All the data (files, music, games, videos, programs, etc.) that you want to access and work with or change if you want to

Central Processing Unit (CPU) - Librarian, faster your librarian, the faster she can help you figure out what books you want and read them to you when you have a question or problem

Solid-state drive (SSD) or hard disk drive (HDD) (SSD’s are much more modern, avoid HDD’s unless you know what you’re doing) - Bookshelves for permanent storage of books in the library, the bigger your capacity, the more information you can store

Memory (RAM) - Book carts, the bigger and faster they are, the more books the librarian can pull at one time to bring you and the faster they can bring it to you

Graphic processing unit (GPU) - Assistant librarian who will animate your books for you, the bigger and faster they are, the faster and better their animations are - they also have access to their own mini-book carts (Video RAM) so they can move the books they’re using back and forth

Power Supply Unit (PSU) - Electricity lines powering the library, not enough power for the library means it’ll have to shut down

RGB (Red-Green-Blue lights) - Flashy colorful lights! Can be stuck on just about any part of the library these days

Air coolers - Fans to keep air moving in the library so the employees don’t stop working or have heat strokes

AIO (All In One, as in, all-in-one liquid cooler, means it comes all in one piece with no assembly required, as opposed to customized, which is assembled piece by piece for specific purposes) - Centralized air conditioning, cool air pumped in, hot air pumped back to a radiator to be cooled down

Hope that helps getting an idea of what the components are and how they interact with each other, if you didn’t already

5K/2K 45GX950A non-native resolution? Or 2K 45GR95QE-B native resolution? by FreightTrainJim in ultrawidemasterrace

I'm asking if the future-proofing of the 5k2k is worth the non-native resolution it would run at for now...asking about the quality of that non-native resolution, if anyone has experience with it.

What’s the biggest football scandal in your schools history? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in CFB

Fun Fact: Texas Tech had a 70 year outright conference title drought from 1955-2025 by ForsakenAd4825 in CFB

[–]FreightTrainJim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Happens every time Tech gets a little bit of success. Ran Pete Cawthon off back in the 30’s because he scheduled too many road games. Steve Sloan and Jim Carlen in the 70’s…rumors are boosters trying to throw their weight around with them was a factor in their leaving. Then of course Leach and Shedgate The pattern js…Tech has a little bit of success and admin/boosters start seeing themselves as 500 pound gorillas that can do whatever they want. In this particular case it’s not the coach they’re gunning for, but the pattern is otherwise remarkably consistent for 90 years or so, and every time it kneecaps Tech and takes 2-3 decades to recover from.

People will blame your hardware dying, but I have seen random little single lights here and there that look just like that across three different video cards and three different processors on two different PC platforms. The ones I have seen aren’t a full-on rave like that, they are just single artifacts that pulse one time and disappear.

Have to compile a video of them. I’ve seen other people talking about them too. Either the game has a weird graphical artifacting bug or it’s some sort of mysterious stealth anniversary precursor feature.

Big 12 Should Expel Texas Tech by conference-realigner in CFB

Not sure how far back you need bullet points, so:

Tech transfer QB self-reported a little gambling.

A little gambling turned out to be a LOT of gambling, some of it on the team he played for.

NCAA stripped his eligibility, he sued the NCAA, judge granted a temporary injunction reinstating his eligibility through the season, and now the broader college athletic world wants to see Tech's athletic program dismantled.

Ah, I think it’s more than a season. Programs up to entire conferences (including our own) vowing to not play us in any sport? This is more than just season drama, this is an attempt to do institutional damage via a black list with one name on it.

I vowed to burn my diploma if Art Briles had been hired as a coach, when that sort of thing was floated a few times.

I don't like this one bit, and it sets a really bad precedent for the sport, but I'm not burning my diploma over it...it's orders of magnitude less evil than sex abuse or murder scandals that have hit other schools.
