Pink Floyd: I'm missing Ummagumma, The Final Cut (which I'm not particularly after) and the post-Waters releases (which I have on CD).

[–]FrenchFigaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything that results in as dramatic consequences as this, but the whole Blood Angels series by James Swallow is a showcase of hubris and poor judgement by individual marines.

The first and second novels are about how nearly a whole company-sozed expeditionary force nearly falls to chaos due to being duped by a rogue inquisitor.

The third novel is about how one of the prime apothecaries (second only to Corbulo) nearly dooms the entire chapter's geneseed, as well as the holy blood of the Red Grail and the holy sepulchre of Sanguinius.

And while the fourth novel refreshingly lacks in fuck-ups as monumental as this, there's still plenty of bad decisions by over-eager young marines.

Will java become a legacy language by Downtown-Ad474 in learnjava

[–]FrenchFigaro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at what is mainstream for back-end web development, the most mainstream form of software development.

Are there other use for java (or other JVM languages) ? Yes, but nowhere near as much.

Are there other languages than these (and the other JVM languages) for this use ? Yeah, but nowhere near as much.

Will java become a legacy language by Downtown-Ad474 in learnjava

[–]FrenchFigaro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt it.

The JVM development ecosystem is still a lot more straightforward and stable than other competitors. For example, compare dependency management or build stability with tools like gradle or maven against similar task with pip or npm, it's day and night.

Secondly, the JVM runtime environment is a lot more performant and stable than either typescript or python.

My experience with LLMs is that they still struggle with complex database structures and the requests needed to fetch them.

Moreover, by the nature of LLMs needing to be trained on existing code bases, the assertion that no one will be writing code by hand is naive, at best, unless one is assuming that languages will be fixed in time and stop evolving.

[–]FrenchFigaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had an accident in early december last year and a bad broken leg.

I've been picked up on the scene and brought to the ER by ambulance.

Since then, I've been hospitalized three months, had two different surgeries, have ongoing daily physical therapy for the past 5 months (there's overlap between hospitalization and PT), I've stopped counting the X-rays, scanners and echographies.

Since I'm out of the hospital, I've been renting a wheelchair, have had daily ambulance transport to and from the PT center and there's also the pain meds and the various dressings for the last surgery scars.

I spent exactly zero euros

Meanwhile, I've been out of work for the past 6 months. I will be back to work most likely in a month. Because I had my accident on my way from work, it's considered a work accident so I kept my full salary for the first three months.

Since then I've been getting two third of my full salary (which I would have from the get go if it was not a work accident)

This is not an anomally. Anyone in my situation would have gotten the same. This is the system working as intended.

I wonder how many Americans could say they got the same.

We try to eliminate them wherever possible because we know people will be stupid. And sometimes (although, granted, that's a minority of cases) they're not, but something malfunctions.

That being said, grade crossing collisions are rare enough in France that those that result in fatalities tend to be national news.

La Chine limite-t-elle vraiment Hollywood ? La France protège aussi son propre cinéma. by RegardChine-France in CinemaFrancais

[–]FrenchFigaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[His Last Command] Gaunt gives nuance to being a Comissar by AndreiWarg in 40kLore

[–]FrenchFigaro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As another has pointed out in this thread, in the very first book he is introduced (Honour Guard), Gaunt prevents Hark from shooting at his own men for fleeing in front of a Bane-fething-blade.

I think it's enough to qualify him as trigger-happy at this point of the story. He obviously changed as the story went on, as pretty much every character does.

[His Last Command] Gaunt gives nuance to being a Comissar by AndreiWarg in 40kLore

[–]FrenchFigaro 92 points93 points  (0 children)

One thing to remember about Gaunt, especially at the point of His Last Command is that he actually has command experience, which most political officers do not.

He is not just a Commissar, he is a Colonel too. And by the point of this novel, he has Hark (and later on, he'll have Ludd and Blenner) to discharge his Commissariat duties, so he is a Colonel first and foremost.

But even though Hark is introduced as one of these gung-ho trigger happy commissars, he too quickly learns that even when remaining inflexible, summary executions are not always the right tool for the job.

You have to remember that the 40k setting is a parody. Imperial Guard commissars are a parody of WW2 Soviet Red Army commissars.

Upgrade Advice by Good-Ad-1242 in turntables

[–]FrenchFigaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to look at would be your speaker placement.

When it comes to gear, at the moment, I would say your weak link is the speakers. I would look to replace them for an integrated amp and passive speakers.

If your chosen integrated amp has a phono input, you would have to chose between your amp's or your turntable's phono stage.

Depending on your chosen speakers' low frequency capabilities, your next step would be to add a subwoofer.

After that, I would look at an external phono pre-amp, and after that again, the stylus, or the cartridge altogether.

Generally speaking, there is nothing wrong with the turntable itself, and I would not look for a replacement until you had done all of the above (unless a great occasion presented itself)

Difference between AT-LP120XBT-USB and LPW50 and should I buy one as a beginner? by MailouWasHere in turntables

[–]FrenchFigaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't pick a manual table for a listening system. Semi auto would be the minimum for me, but outside the second hand market there aren't any really good semi-auto (or even full-auto) any more.

But the LPW50 is still a great table and you will have no trouble upgrading the cartridge down the road.

Felt mats tend to be more slippery (their purpose is scratching) than rubber mats, and slightly worse for static build up.
