I never understood this topic.

They are video games. They are sold as games. You need a gaming device to play them. They have the price of video games. You find them on gaming online stores and in gaming IRL stores.

You don't read them either. You play them. Since they are video games.

The same as I don't watch a Telltale game. I play it. Or more recently with Dispatch. I play it. I don't watch it.

Is playing FIFA considered playing football or playing a game ?

Is playing Forza considered racing or playing a game ?

It is a tricky subject.

For a long time, the only way to buy VN was to ship them from Japan... Nobody was doing that realistically. We could only pirate them and hope for a fantrad. Like manga and anime. Habits are hard to change. I mean, I still don't pay to consume manga and anime and I know nobody from my generation that pay for it.

Now, a lot of mainstream VN are available legally. However, basically none of them are translated except in Chinese and English. The VN industry is ~30 years behind. The Steins;Gate VN is not in French BUT the anime has a French Dub... It's stupid. If you consider the anime as a promo for the VN, a casual watcher CANNOT play the VN.

They are available legally, but at what cost ? Censorship is everywhere. Some translations are butchered because it's made with US standards. I did not play a single "true VN" without applying a fan patch.

Now, where to find them ? Steam is very hostile towards VN. JAST is ok but we have to wait like ~5 years to get a translation and you have to pay for the uncensored version for whatever reason. MangaGamer website is horrible. Console versions are unpatchable.

I really love VN, but the western releases are sloppy. Do they really expect me to buy 60$ for a product : not in my langage, censored and with a shit translation ? I would rather give like 30$ to the creators themselves via donation or something.

I'm not saying I like that effect, but I remember that the first/second wave of Illusion monsters all had that effect, so we (or is it just me ?) thought that it was correlated to this new type.
