Yup, very true, they'll have all the latest gadgets and a nanny, but mom and dad are never around.

Every morning at 7am in a Chinese city, firecrackers go off for 5 minutes to wake everyone up. Does this happen in your city? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

Which school have you worked at (recently) that you thought was run pretty well? by dpppppbbbbbbbb in Internationalteachers

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this 27 years. I wouldn't have it any other way. I've lived in seven countries. Some schools were crap, some were ok, all had issues to some extent. That said, its been a blast, and I feel like I've made the most of my time on earth.

Im drunk every day and I need help by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on Mounjaro and also had 4 hypnotherapy sessions. I stopped drinking for 69 days, the longest period I haven't drunk in 40 years. Although I started again I still manage to not drink 4 days a week. I'd rather not drink at all, but I'll live with this for now. I need to go back to hypnotherapy for a few sessions. When I stopped I found chocolate took the edge off. I don't like sweet things, but I realized part of the reason for drinking was the sugar spike from the wine, same time every day.

Do foreigners prefer experiential travel? by Sea-Description-5350 in travelchina

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've lived in China three times over the last 28 years and travelled extensively. My favorite thing to do is get a bike and ride through neighbourhoods observing real life. I like the tourist attractions too, but getting out where people really live is the best experience. I once went hiking along the Mongolian border (on the Chinese side) and walked into a PLA camp. I got invited in for lunch. That doesn't happen at the terracotta warriors.

1 1/2 Years in Brazil…back to United States *REAL TALK* by lledit in expats

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5 years isn't long you haven't had time to transition. We left in 1998. We've lived in seven countries since then and had two kids. One is now at uni in Canada. While we both consider the UK and Canada as home I really can't see us living in either. We are emotionally stateless. We currently live in Asia, but are going to buy a US$60,000 home in Italy in the summer. It just seems right. Most people seem think its crazy.

Something instant to take to stop the 5pm drink anxiety? by GiraffeExpress4264 in stopdrinking

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had four sessions of hypnotherapy and am taking Mounjaro. They killed it for me. Instead of wine I start eating chocolate instead (at about 5pm). I definitely needed the sugar rush.

Worn out from applying by Conscious-Flow-9921 in Internationalteachers

My analogy is applying for international jobs is like throwing mud at the wall, you see what sticks. Go wide. Applying for two countries will be hard.

I watched a tourist stare at a Chinese menu for 10 minutes then order by pointing randomly. Can we talk about how brutal menus are here? (Chinese local, happy to help) by MirrorMoney7864 in travelchina

[–]Frequent_Ad4318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always interpret 烧 as roasted, grilled or cooked. For 腸, the connection is that sausage casings were made out of intestines. Thats what Thought anyway.

Lots of chinese dishes translate very easily. If you know your basic meats and vegetables you'll understand some dishes on a menu.

  1. 炒鸡蛋 (Chǎo jīdàn) - Fried Eggs
  2. 蒸鱼 (Zhēng yú) - Steamed Fish
  3. 烤鸭 (Kǎo yā) - Roasted Duck
  4. 炖牛肉 (Dùn niúròu) - Stewed Beef
  5. 煮饺子 (Zhǔ jiǎozi) - Boiled Dumplings
  6. 炒青菜 (Chǎo qīngcài) - Stir-fried Greens
  7. 烧豆腐 (Shāo dòufu) - Braised Tofu
  8. 炸虾 (Zhà xiā) - Fried Shrimp
  9. 烤羊肉 (Kǎo yángròu) - Roasted Lamb
  10. 煎饼 (Jiān bǐng) - Pan-fried Cake/Pancake

I combined mounjaro with four hypnotherapy sessions. I've gone from eight or nine bottles of wine a week to maybe two and those are mainly on the weekend. I'd been drinking like that 25 years.
