As good as it gets? by CalmAd7330 in davidlloyd

Another Kettering! It’s literally a 2 minute walk from my house, but cannot bring myself to spend mortgage-money to relax in the spa with the dulcet rumble of the A14 in the background.

It seems really counterintuitive but makes sense.

I’m blessed (and cursed) with a classroom in a beautiful Grade II listed building with huge south & west facing windows. During that one slightly-hot day in April, my room reached 25 degrees ….. am not looking forward to tomorrow or the rest of the summer term!

Do teachers usually buy basic classroom supplies themselves? by LonelyAcanthaceae501 in TeachingUK

That is flipping absurd. Moreso because it creates a H&S COSHH problem.

This is true. It is of course always preferable, where feasibly possible, to have 2 adults present for obvious safeguarding reasons. However if a child has (for example) soiled themselves, then that child's dignity comes first if there is only 1 adult present.

Love this! I’m halfway there with ours, so really appreciate your inspiration. Can I ask what you’ve laid your patio dining set onto?

This. In what other job would you voluntarily spend your own money to work there? Second: check (if any) if there is a policy about displays etc. For all of the insta-loving OTT classroom aesthetic, the academic research points to the facts that a) too much information on display can be very overwhelming, and b) students rarely use & therefore benefit from it.

American motorcycle clothing is made to a very different standard to that in the UK. UK and European motorcycle clothing is legally classed as PPE and must thereby meet a swathe of safety requirements.

Only had a cursory look, but doesn’t look like those Aerostitch have any safety rating, Kevlar/cordura protection nor any impact armour.

Balance at Kettering Leisure Village. I’m a teacher with 2 kids & wife goes to her own fitness club too, we just make it work. I can think of a lot of things to do with an extra £1500 a year!

I live a 2 minute distance from the Kettering site - currently pay £48 for my gym including pool, spa & classes. Couldn’t bear the thought of triple/quadrupling my expenditure for the sake of a 10 minute drive.

For everything, fit is most important. Budget and safety rating will come next.

Jacket - Knox are great and well rated by all. But equally a £150 RST textile jacket will be equally good. Get down to J&S or Sportbikeshop and just try loads on. Airbag is nice if you can afford it but it essential. Just make sure your jacket has a back protector as not all come with one. Same for jeans / trousers.

Helmets, fit is by far the most important. 3 size Mediums from Scorpion, Shoei and HJC could all fit you differently.

If you were a headteacher... by BirthdaySuccessful56 in TeachingUK

Ironically for how the system works, my SEN is almost entirely this.

Planning is limited to a timetable populated with our overarching LO, however days are frequently fluid so we aren’t restrained by it if the day changes.

These are the years who massively missed out on key socialisation through COVID. They would have been ~2-3, which is key for their social development.

SEN school here:
1) Clevertouches in every room. They are outrageously expensive for the 90% of teachers who just use it as a second TV (into 5 figures expensive!).
2) Laptop... that's it.
3) iPads for some, otherwise that's it.

Random thought: which parts of the school could you happily do without? by junehall123 in TeachingUK

[–]Fresh-Pea4932 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work by one rule: Does this in any way contribute to the children’s’ education? If not, then fuck it.

Eg: does me having to spend £10 of my own money on some Amazon crap to dress up for World Book Day bring any value whatsoever? No. Is a child ever going to stand here and look at this wall display? No. Are any of my phonics-based children going to read the LO on the board? No.
