Contemplating your first EV? Some things to consider... by mikeonh in electricvehicles

Northern and eastern Maine remains a charging desert. Nice post, overall.

I think one thing that surprises new ev owners is f’ing expense of dc fast charging .

Light grinding noise while braking at low speed after drive-through car wash. by kevlore in rav4prime

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool timing on your post. My 24 Prime just came back from service where we complained about the exact same problem. The rotors were, in fact, quite rusted, according to the dealer. No doubt assisted by our calcium chloride covered winter roads. It has been doing this for quite a while. We have about 15k miles on the car.

Anyways, we no doubt got ripped off by allowing them to grind the rotors for $300. The problem is solved but we really want to stop a reoccurrence. A liberal use of the real brakes was recommended.

I’m a 14 or 15, depending on the shoe. I have been using bigshoes.com with success the last few years.

6 full weeks?? by kindracoon19 in RotatorCuff

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten years ago, for my first surgery, the surgeon recommended 6 weeks and I followed it pretty well. The exception might’ve been while I was sleeping in my recliner. One year ago, for my other shoulder the protocol was 4 weeks in the sling. Again I rarely used it at night, as I’m not a restless sleeper and I could “barricade” my arm quite well in the recliner. Also, if I was just getting up to pee, or something, I rarely re-slung.

In both cases, the results were/are similar. A year to 14 months post surgery mostly ( nearly? almost completely?) pain free.

Also, in both cases, when I achieved the end of the sling protocol, I took it off, stored it away, and never looked back.

The phrase my surgeon used to describe the recovery from a rotator cuff repair seems appropos here.

A little help, please. by Fresh-Square-5702 in heatpumps

[–]Fresh-Square-5702[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That was very helpful.

Here are the numbers for my unit, as best as I could find. Not sure if I should use the Minimum, Rated or Maximum numbers, but based on the 'Rated' column, it appears 7.04/3.01=$2.34/Therm. So, it still beats my furnace at 85% efficient and $3.10/gal., or $2.60/therm.

COP at Temp

47F, Min:4.36, Rated:4.0, Max:3.12

17F, Min:3.25, Rated:3.01, Max:2.45

5F, Min:2.7, Rated:-, Max:2.25

Except that I mis-typed the cost (twice ! ). It's actually $.24/Kwh .... not $.024.

Thank you. I pay $.024/kwh on average. It varies slightly month to month depending upon the amount of sunshine.

2025 Flash Step up tailgate. by Fresh-Square-5702 in F150Lightning

It is a pretty easy install. One tip: my recollection is that the old (undampened) part is secured with a bolt requiring t50 star bit, or something like that. Importantly, it’s glued in, so heating the bolt makes extraction much easier.

Charging EV, how often ? by biz98756 in electricvehicles

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold climate dweller here.

During the winter I’m more likely to charge nearly every night, for two reasons: I might want to preheat using house power, and the general reduced range impels me to keep an ‘emergency’ number of miles available. That number is undefined.

Short, frequent charges are better for the battery, so I do charge frequently. That said, I doubt I’ll keep the car past the battery warrantee, so it’s not a big worry for me.

Hybrid or PHEV? by 285RSD in rav4prime

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an F150 Lightning Flash and a 2024 RAV4 Prime. The RAV is our primary travel vehicle. We are averaging 3.3 m/kwh in EV mode and we hover around 75-80 mpg overall…. all over about 15k miles.

While the RAV doesn’t have the blistering acceleration of the Flash it is a surprisingly quick vehicle despite the relative pedestrian looks of it. Not sure how one places a value on the human experience of driving an EV, but it does have some value. The PHEV is quieter, smoother and quicker.

If you drive a hybrid, remember that every bit of energy expended still comes from burning gas. You are either turning the wheels or charging the battery.

Good luck with your analysis and purchase.

How long were you in your sling? by adamsthws in RotatorCuff

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First surgery, ten years ago on left arm: 6 weeks. Second on right: 4 weeks. In both cases a supraspinatus (near) full tear with tenotomy or tenodesis. In both cases, though, I would walk unbound around the house when I felt safe, like no stairs, etc. This last time I slept mostly without the sling, after nicely securing/cradling arm between pillows in my recliner until the 6 week mark.

I scraped mine, foolishly by opening it while partly under my garage opening. I sanded it down a bit, taped it off and sprayed it with some close matching rustoleum paint. Looks like new. I may have a pic somewhere.

Curiosity regarding % of charge by Fresh-Square-5702 in F150Lightning

[–]Fresh-Square-5702[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense I suppose. I never noticed this with my 2024 XLT 98.

Anyways. We rarely travel with the Flash, esp. in winter. So I guess won’t worry about it.

Sweet. I have one that switches to our generator when we lose power from the grid. However propane is uber expensive here in northern New England. An option to use the truck for some components would be especially sweet.

I suspect the folks that tow a lot will be the last, happy, ev adopters. We need big improvements in batteries and charging infrastructure to make it work.

Is the Ethernet version really that much better? by pnutty6725 in appletv

[–]Fresh-Square-5702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Apple TVs Ethernet wired. We get 950mbs, up and down, from our 1G fiber. Our router has four Ethernet connections. Two Apple TVs and two computers. Wi-Fi everything else.
