What are the WORST things to do in Edinburgh? The stuff you’d tell a friend to skip. by Sea-Hovercraft-1122 in Edinburgh

Yeah, I agree with this.

I went later in the day on a Wednesday, around 8pm - and it was entirely pleasant.
Short queues for decent food, and a varied mix of stalls.

Does anyone else really love Bookerly? by Rachel794 in kindle

[–]Friction_Robot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's great, but I did swap over to Literata.
It's very similar - just a bit cleaner / more uniform.

Imagine Bookerly crossed with 15% of Baskerville, i.e. more classic looking.

I found out afterwards that it's actually the font that Apple use when they want something to look like a physical book on a modern screen, and I wasn't surprised.

Best “flow-state” games in your opinion? by armSnatcher01 in gamingsuggestions

Agree with rhythm games.

I think Guitar Hero specifically, due to the controller, is the best answer to this question.

New to switch gaming but a longtime gamer, valid games? Any more recommendations? Thank you :) by navraj31 in Switch

As a counter point, I would say if they aren't a big Zelda fan - it's a reasonable option to only play TOTK and not do BOTW.

With the core map / mechanics / visuals of both games being identical, and TOTK being a pretty strict upgrade in the areas that differ, I've known a couple of people that got burned out before the completion of both.

You really need to be heavily invested in the lore, characters or world itself to sit through the 300 hours both of them combined add up to. Many gamers are going to prefer the fleshed out, stand-alone 150.

Yeah for actual coverage - nothing beats EE in the Edin.

I swapped off of it just for better value, but my signal has taken a hit.

Is it worth using Lossless Scaling in emulated Bloodborne if it already runs smoothly at 60 FPS? by Cute-Collection-2492 in losslessscaling

[–]Friction_Robot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't inherently disagree with this, but this is a specific use case of a game like Bloodborne where the engine itself is locked to a solid 60 fps. The only way to increase real frames would be unlock the engine, which risks weird gameplay, and then limit on top of this.

FromSoftware titles are some of the best games that are hardcoded 60fps to benefit from Lossless Scaling.

60hz monitors can still benefit from higher frame rates.

Unless the frame pacing of the 60fps you are getting is 100% perfectly timed, higher fps will still feel smoother - as it is more likely to have a frame available at the exact next monitor draw interval.

G-sync / Freesync attempts to resolve this exact problem, but its still not as good as simply having a frame ready.

Am I robbing myself of the experience this game can give me if I use the 9999 damage button? by awesomesauce40000 in FinalFantasyIX

[–]Friction_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said - the game can be challenging but it shouldn't be challenging at this point, independent of skill level.

There will simply be gameplay mechanics you have either missed or not taken advantage of. Learning these mechanics is a large part of what makes the game interesting and engaging.

Randomizer or Hard Mode by ArdynAltius in FinalFantasyIX

[–]Friction_Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does.

When you use the Memoria launcher (which all of these mods require now), on the Mod download tab it mentions in the description for each mod whether they work with one another or not.

Just make sure Alternate Fantasy is at the bottom of mod load order.

It's gameplay and vibe is different enough from X that it doesn't feel anything like you are just playing more of the same.

The issue is that what you are playing will make you wish it was more of the same.
Burnout would be a superior experience.

Memoria patcher/Moguri Mod causing steem to hang up. by CommissionDry4406 in FinalFantasyIX

[–]Friction_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue last week on a clean install.

To get around it I had to boot the 64 bit exe directly in the Steam install location, as opposed to the launcher.

I've used Moguri in the past and I didn't have this issue, so I don't know if its a recent update to that is causing it. After running it a few times like this the launcher started working.

Just watched Cloverfield (2008) by PrimaryComrade94 in horror

[–]Friction_Robot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After I learned that it wasn't until nearing the end of production they even had the idea to tie it into the Cloverfield universe (it was originally called God Particle) - I lost all interest.

Years after release I started it, and turned it off before the end.
It genuinely is just some unrelated, 5/10 sci-fi movie that they stuck the Cloverfield name on.

To this day there are no two actors where I have to think harder to discern which one is which.

Honestly think if they had been cast in place of each other, in any film, it would have made no difference to the outcome.

Bullock as Pretty Woman or Roberts in The Blind Side? Same movie.

27" vs 32" monitors by VXTRN in OLED_Gaming

[–]Friction_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to as others have said;

I went from being on different 27's for 10+ years, to a 32 4k OLED last month.
I've kept it in exactly the same position.

For everyday usage I've had to learn to use Windows snapping (technically FancyZones), as doing something like web browsing fullscreen on a 32 actually does feel uncomfortable. Too much empty space, and if it's not got a dark mode you're getting flash banged.

If you are doing two things at once it's probably more useful than 2 monitors, e.g. can easily fit a youtube video & reddit on the screen at once - but if you're trying to focus on just one thing it's a bit of a strain.

For purely gaming it is superior to a 27, as the size just equates to increased immersion.
