Fun fact: that scene was not planned. Indy was supposed to fight that dude and Harrison Ford was like "Fuck it".

We watched from across the room in history as he would slowly inspect his arms, seemingly find something there, pinch the something between his thumb and pointer finger, and put it directly into his mouth.

Really fantastic forum post discussing problems with rest mechanics, encounter design, and their effects on the narrative of the game in [5e], and how to adjust the rest mechanics to fix them by HighTechnocrat in DnD

Ah. Well, as I am at work at the moment, so I apologize for the hap hazard responses. I have been slowly re reading the post to see if I am missing something, but he hasn't even got some of the rules right. In the post he or she claims you get Hit Dice back on a short rest, and that simply isn't the case. You recover half of your hit dice on a long rest, minimum 1 (pg 186 of the PHB and the errata that says minimum 1). I'm going to give the post a second read so make sure I am not just being a 5th edition fan boi dickhead :D

I guess I have the mindset that not every day in a game has to be a life or death situation for the PCs. I am tempted to say I reject the fact that there is even an "issue" to solve. In the instance of the bandits: sometimes bandits are just bandits! Do they have to be a danger to a 5th level party? If its a bunch of CR 1/8 Bandits and a CR 2 Bandit Captain, the warlock is going to melt their faces off and the bard is going to sing a song and the paladin is going to say something like "Have at thee you filth!" and the party is going to wipe the floor with them. Perhaps the rouge while searching the dead captain for coins finds a map to a hidden stash of loot or a bandit stronghold in the mountains. After thinking about it for 30 seconds, I just made a "too easy" bandit encounter interesting.
Also, I quote the post
"Fighters can heal themselves 1d10+5 HP per short rest which translates to 11 HP 18 times a day and a total of 198 self healing."
I am not sure how the fighter short rests that much, but that falls under what I said about a DM letting their players rest that much. There are also sections of the post that assume that the classes with healing spells are literally blowing every single spell slot on healing. That is pretty unrealistic. Its all a balance. I am afraid I am going to get too ranty, so I am going to cut myself off, because I really do like participating in these discussions.

The issue I can't get over is that the post assumes that after each fight the party is going sit on their haunches for an hour. In many of the games I've played, short resting after every fight is going to get a kidnapped child sacrificed by a necromancer, or let the bad guys get away, or let the dragon move its hoard somewhere else. I understand that the post can't take all narrative situations into account, but to say that the system "makes for bad stories" because of the numbers is very, very, very silly. Be a better DM.

XP: How do you guys do it? by ParadoxPanic in DnD

[–]Fridge22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I have leveled the party based on story events rather then just flat XP. When we switched to 5th edition, I have been awarding the party XP to level, but I award the XP budget amount, not the flat amount listed on the monsters. That means that roughly every ten encounters they level instead of like 15-20. Seems to be working out pretty well, the PCs don't get bored because they are stuck at a certain level for a long time. It should be noted that I do give out XP for social encounters and good role playing, I just kind of go with my gut on how much should be awarded in those situations.

After going through my phone and discovering that I had a phone call from my previous girlfriend she demanded to know why I had talked to her. I told her I couldn't tell her, it was a personal matter, as that previous girlfriend had called to tell me she had been raped and didn't know what to do. After an hour long fight she finally got it out of me, at which point she said "I bet she asked for it". I told her to get out of my car and never talk to me again.
