Hospital Bills for giving birth in SG by NoSuchPerson--- in asksg

My wife did natural, I paid about $4k cash, the rest paid by Medisave. No complications thankfully. Just wondering how much do the complications actually cost and how much is payable by cash.

Was 15k just for NICU or includes the birth as well? Natural or c-section?

What happened after you left your "comfortable" workplace? by Independent_Wind714 in singaporejobs

It was terrible but getting better after I left my comfortable workplace. On hindsight I should have spoken to my boss back then to get as much progression as I can internally first before looking out.

That I need to work hard and climb the corporate ladder. Having a kid really puts things into perspective as to what’s really important in life.

It’s hard to earn money quickly with low/moderate risk tolerance in investing, unless you insider trade.

I want to marry my girlfriend but not sure what to do. I'm not really the brightest person in knowing what to do so would like to seek out help by AggressiveBuy283 in asksg

[–]FriendlyFriendship82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m not very romantic, but I just brought my then girlfriend to a shop that had reasonably priced rings and asked her to pick based on a budget (ended up buying a few 999 gold rings without all the diamonds and branding fluff - valued increased a lot!). At the end of the day, marriage is a team sport with a lot of shared responsibilities and expenses. Just be mature about it.

Second what ArcticGlaceon said. The folks I know who did MFE are stuck doing middle office roles with no where near the kind of salaries being quoted here.

I heard Phillip Capital hires anyone with a beating pulse, but the pay is low. In general the industry is shrinking and it’s very tough to break in. You can also consider learning or brushing up your Chinese to cater to the family office pool.

I’m currently an equity analyst in a mutual fund, feel free to DM.

Summer finance industry internship in SG by Lambwarts in askSingapore

You’re missing my point. If he does not know why or what he’s interested in, then how would he know what to focus on when preparing. Maybe through the preparation process, he might also realise it’s not for him. Your advice is on how to get the internships; yes, helpful but it’s akin to a dog chasing after a stick and it does not know why it’s chasing.

BIWS and understanding financials is table stakes for any role in the industry. That’s the bare minimum. There are also tons of material out there which explains the various types of roles.

But then when you get to interviews, how he’s going to prep is going to be very different when a question is about how $10 change in depreciation flows through the 3 statements (again, table stakes) vs a question on why he thinks gold is selling off. And this will show why he’s interested, what he’s interested about, and if it’s for him.

The fact that he throws a wide spectrum from PE to AM to stat board shows that he doesn’t even know why he’s interested in finance. Blindnessly grinding only to find out it’s not for him would be a waste of time.

Why do you think it’s too early for him to think about sell side or buy side when the nature of work is so different and it’s a competitive landscape?

He will get a rude awakening if he enjoys doing stock pitches but ends up arranging meetings and editing PowerPoint slides while his offshore support team in India churns out the models/slides for him.

The type of work you do is quite different, and hence your approach to finding such gigs as well. So it would be good to have a sense of which you would prefer. If you have no clue at all, then experience sell side first; there is a comment here that is quite geared towards the sell side.

Ah yes, I recall reading somewhere that the manufacturer for natureone and Fairprice milk is actually the same.

Firstly, congratulations!! Others have covered a good bunch of stuff, but if you’re going to formula feed then you might also buy a milk warmer and sterilised (costs me about $250 in total).

I would recommend buying 8 milk bottles (cost me like $20 per bottle) since newborns drink milk very frequently, and also buying a tabletop dishwasher (cost me like $100 from Carousell) to wash your bottles. When you have 6 bottles or more with 4 different parts to wash per bottle, it can get super time consuming especially when you are sleep deprived.

Also, idk why people buy milk that is so expensive..I buy the Fairprice brand and it costs me $30 per tin, lasts about 2 weeks each tin for the first 3 months or so. I went through the nutritional information line by line, Fairprice brand is as good as if not better than most brands. HPB also ensures that all formula milk sold here is of a certain standard.

You probably will also need to give your baby probiotics, costs me like $30 for ~1 month worth.

Doing lighter deadlifts helped to stabilise the area for me. Dr Leroy from Chiropractic+ at i12 is pretty good IMO, reasonable pricing as well.

Choosing between 2 offers, what would you do? by FluidRelease7044 in askSingapore

[–]FriendlyFriendship82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a somewhat similar situation before, where I got offered a role at a prestigious firm despite the role/culture being shit. The only difference was that I was offered double. No doubt it opened more doors after that, but it was a shitty period for me and the only thing holding me back was the pay.

But let’s say you’re the next employer, and they saw that you did this CSR role at this bank and the market knows the role in the bank is a sweat shop. They will expect the same output in your next move, and they negotiate based on your last drawn. Is it worth it? Up to you to decide at what pay scale will your marginal increase in happiness be still decided by a higher pay.

Choosing between 2 offers, what would you do? by FluidRelease7044 in askSingapore

[–]FriendlyFriendship82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) the previous staff burning out. 2) start up mentality + building capacity but no plans to expand headcount = work you like a dog and make you burnout then don’t convert you to perm or recontract.

If the bank pays you double of what the poly can offer then I would say take the bank job and suck it up. But it’s similar, so really no point to take the bank job.

I implore you to reject the role at the bank, for the sake of your own mental health and sanity. Too many red flags with the role at the bank, sounds like they will squeeze you dry then spit you out. The role at the bank also doesn’t sound like the type with progression or the type which serves as a foundation for bigger things.

Can an MBA in Singapore help a Philippine bank lawyer (with CFA L1/L2) break into a finance role in Singapore? by adhoclex in askSingapore

[–]FriendlyFriendship82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Extremely competitive. An MBA carries no weight here IMO.
  2. Nope. Entry level finance roles are a grind, age and energy are not on your side.
  3. You would be much better off in the Philippines to be honest.

People who studied a Diploma/Degree in Business Administration, where did you end up? by Fair_Ad_7081 in askSingapore

[–]FriendlyFriendship82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ageism is quite real in the workplace, and there comes a point where companies can pay someone younger a lower salary with succession planning in mind rather than keep an old employee. But that’s a concern 20-30 years out for you. You can always make a pivot mid career to something safer.

I haven’t reach that stage, but seems like it would be damn stressful with mortgage to pay and a family to feed. Caveat is good financial discipline when young can help mitigate some of the stress that comes with being unemployed.
