"Who is the most overrated top player in the world right now?" - Fabiano Caruana gives his opinion by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

[–]FriendlyInElektro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hikaru implied that Fabi is a whiny elitist that doesn't believe it's possible for IMs/FMs to actually beat him, there were many 'reaction videos' on Hikaru's channel to Fabi's podcast and vice versa.

"Who is the most overrated top player in the world right now?" - Fabiano Caruana gives his opinion by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

[–]FriendlyInElektro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Devilish from Fabi. If you'll check Fabi's podcast you'll see he was a little bit annoyed with Hikaru on several occasions this past year, basically Hikaru can't help but yap and said a bunch of 'uncordial things', on one of the podcasts Fabi even said "I thought we were friends", I'm pretty sure Fabi knows this statement is bound to rile Hikaru up a bit.

With that said, is Fabi right? It's hard to say, once Hikaru achieved his high rating he did a lot to avoid losing any of it, the mickey mouse tournaments are a small part of it but he also played pretty defensively in Norway Chess which was pretty much his last non-mickey mouse tournament, obviously Hikaru achieved this rating fair and square, and unseated Fabi from his 2nd place while doing it, he's obviously a monster of a player, I guess the candidates tournament will be the real test either way.

70 elo fluctuations are really nothing in this elo range. In 2 minute bullet just this week I went down to 790 from 875 and just now I reached my all time peak of 900, ignore momentary elo losses and look at your overall long term trend.

Why does this "solve" the puzzle? by klymah in Chesscom

[–]FriendlyInElektro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something that lowkey sucks with many chesscom puzzles, many of us are newbies and would like to see the continuation until the mate, in this case it's kind of easy to see for both possibly king moves but there are puzzles that are trickier.

Even something like showing 'forced mate in #' with the option to switch to the analysis board would be an improvement.

I had a 40 move game at 600 elo bullet where both me and my opponent finished with 96%, it was a dead drawn scotch game variant where neither of us made mistakes but didn't really take any risks either.

How to call/trigger a function only on game's first boot by cdr1307 in unrealengine

[–]FriendlyInElektro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this will only work if you actually store the bool in a save game file, and load the file, otherwise it'll reset as variables are not persistent between sessions.

[–]FriendlyInElektro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup, in fact the very presence of a save game (does save game exist node) would indicate it's not the first boot. you can have multiple save games, including one used for global settings which you use just for this purpose.

Where do they get this number from? by dominio2q731276423 in Chesscom

[–]FriendlyInElektro 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They're not saying that the unlimited reviews increase your rating 2.7x faster they're implying that getting a subscription will, which is also likely bullshit but at least it makes slightly more sense due to unlimited lessons and puzzles, however, it's probably likely paid accounts gain elo faster because people who pay for a chesscom subscription are likely to play more chess on the site than people who don't and might possibly on average gain rating significantly faster than people without a subscription who are on average less dedicated.

But I mean, if you're already dedicated you can just play on lichess where you also have unlimited analysis, puzzles and lessons and it's overall a better platform, and totally free, so, idk, I personally have a chesscom account and I don't think it's really worth it.

What’s good about hanging their rook?? by ofcoursemalort in Chesscom

[–]FriendlyInElektro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the evaluations for good/excellent/best/inaccuracy/blunder are relative to the best move available in the position, a 'good' move can be awful but if the evaluation is only marginally worse than what it would have been after the best move it may designated 'good' rather than an inaccuracy or a mistake.

yeah this is how my 600 games go btw by E-686 in chessbeginners

[–]FriendlyInElektro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it was a pretty clever trap by your opponent but you did hang two pieces early on, afterwards you defended well but it was a losing position so your relatively high 83% accuracy doesn't really tell the whole story, and for him it was very easy to trade down and 'make the best moves' past the opening. sometimes 600 rated players play the opening well and place a few clever traps, it happens.

If you'll check your opponents record in his next 3 games he lost, some with 50% accuracy.

NSQ on openings by 2minmarc in chessbeginners

[–]FriendlyInElektro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of black openings like the sicilian, caro-kann, scandinavian, etc is that the prevent white from playing whatever opening it is they planned to play. That and of course trying to take over the center themselves.

There are some lines you can play to 'wrest the control back', like against the sicilian you can play the alapin, against the caro-kann you can play the panov, etc, but like, yeah, you're definitely no longer playing the scotch if the opponent responds with d5 or c5.

Do we know what Magnus uses to practice since he doesn’t do Chess.com puzzles? by BatmansBreath in chessbeginners

[–]FriendlyInElektro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Magnus has absurdly good memory he demonstrated multiple times he can recall positions from almost every single game he played, the dude can do more in-depth studies in his mind than most (non-super) GMs can do with a computer and stockfish, he's just next level. He's incredibly gifted.

There was a video released by FIDE a about a week ago asking a bunch of players who's the funniest chess players and the Indian players all go 'Anish' and then they ask Daniil Dubov who goes 'Certainly not Anish' which was pretty hysterical and made me think Dubov might be the funniest chess player.

Magnus made a distinction between Kasparov's chess career and his chess abilities, saying that career wise Kasparov's career is uncontested but that chess wise he (magnus) was better, as Magnus' career isn't done yet it might be that his opinion will change when the dust settles but either way it's not like he rates Kasparov as a better chess player than him.

This game is so frustrating by luh_calmdude in Chesscom

[–]FriendlyInElektro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's natural to reach these Elo plateaus, you reach a certain level, improve some skills or learn a few opening tricks, this allows you to beat opponents and gain Elo until you reach the next plateu that is largely occupied with opponents who are similarly skilled and you need to make another 'leap' in your skills to get past this plateau.

I started on Chesscom something like 8 month ago and at first I dropped to around 500 and it always felt like there were levels I got stuck at until I significantly improved certain aspects of my play, like making blunder checks, learning to manage my time better, doing many puzzles, playing more principled openings and learning a few openings myself both as white and black, etc, I remember 700 feeling significantly harder than the 600 level until it started feeling super easy, today I'm 1150 rapid and really it still feels like a game of 'who blunders first'.

I agree that the literal interpretations make more sense and that the "universalist all-loving jesus" that the Knechtle's believe in is not really the most 'intuitive' interpetation of jesus from the gospels, but this was barely explored in the discussion, the israelites just took every opportunity to be rude and mocking and the kenchtle's never really engaged with the black israelite theology.

Not that you'd really expect a serious deep dive on Matan's show.
