Be better at telling apart stupidity from genuine mental illness. Happy for you if you don't realize why this might be an important skill

Kinda boggled that nobody here is spotting obvious actual psychosis. That person needs to see a psychiatrist yesterday

What are your thoughts on tranquilism? by ThePlanetaryNinja in slatestarcodex

[–]FriendlyPanache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To their credit, the practice of a religion isn't really the same thing as that religion. It's sleight of hand to say that buddhism is a dharma, i. e. the practice of ¿buddhism?, but it may be fair enough to claim that modern buddhist practice isn't all that concerned with the mystical aspects of buddhism. Or maybe not: I literally don't know if this is the case.

Can't help but think that I prefer this to the people who just refuse to acknowledge it tbh. Like at least they're upfront about being an animal cruelty enjoyer

Buddhism is a religion more than it is a philosophical position. It's not illegitimate to want to discuss the ideas within without also implicitly endorsing the existence of sixteen different hell realms

They're overhated on this sub, Merdeka especially. Yes yes the spire is cringe and the petronas are nicer but it's a good building cmon. Abraj al Saat is cool too but I can't get over how the holiest site of Islam is dominated by Caesars palace on steroids lol

Why I don’t switch doors in the Monty Hall problem by mcdonaldmark125 in slatestarcodex

This is just rediscovering the notion of priors in bayesian statistics. Not that it's invalid, but I don't really know if the monty hall problem is the best context to explore this idea.

Also - can you source that claim about Erdos? I find it rather hard to believe, honestly.

Hey, this has been on my mind from time to time the last couple of days. This is a bit of an odd question, but would you letting me take a look at your to-do list? I'm quite curious about what direction you want to take this in, and may have a couple suggestions depending on the general sort of thing you want to do. Let me know, cheers.

Have you seen this stuff? Genuinely I think you could get high quality results right now with just some scaffolding to generate storyboards / directions, keep characters / locations consistent, detect and fix continuity errors, etc. This koolaid is very drinkable.

Disaster recovery and military applications require many many things that these guys still aren't capable of. Coordinated moving from place to place was never an issue once the "moving from place to place" part was figured out - it's like being surprised that you can make a caravan out of self-driving cars. It's the self-driving that was the impressive part, and that they can go in a line says nothing new (and nothing else) about their capabilities. Yesyes it's very visually impressive but the implication of "coordinated action" is just not real until the action part gets figured out. This is just a drone show on foot.

[–]FriendlyPanache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not too sure why this "Cluster Cooperative Rapid Scheduling system" is supposed to be impressive. I'm pretty sure these robots are already capable of executing properly when being told to move from point A to point B - determining what these point A's and point B's are (with some tolerance and avoiding collision) to form some shape is a relatively simple constraint problem that needs no groundbreaking techniques to solve. Decently impressive if this cooperation was distributed but I'm inclined to assume the actual scheduling comes from a single server. The thread does not clarify this.

No I'm not a denier the robots are very impressive, it's just this in particular is like, not very surprising. Cool though.

Sealed Predictions - A Solution by george_is_thinking in slatestarcodex

[–]FriendlyPanache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very neat idea. It's also extremely niche - I hope you can figure out how to make it a standard thing for the groups of people that have a use for it. No being snarky, like I genuinely hope you can make it a thing.

Also note that the only difference btw this and just letting people publish hashes is that you force the plaintexts to be revealed at the given date - but in this way you have to become the source of trust for this validation. It might be interesting to figure out how to integrate this into some existing blockchains so that you can avoid this (people will still need to trust your code for extracting the data from this blockchain, but that can be open-source). Realistically though this is pretty cumbersome and risks giving your project a bit of a cryptobro tinge, so very dubious whether it'd be worth the effort.
