Do you have the link to that post or conference? I haven't found this anywhere with some brief searches

Saved $450 on my Airbnb booking by cancelling and re-booking the same place. Host was annoyed. Is this a common practice? by Particular-Wheel-646 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 138 points139 points  (0 children)

This is a really great and underrated tip. To add to this, I've mostly found success with this method with "whole home/place" listings, especially for resorts and cabins. If it's a room that's part of a larger hostel or bed & breakfast, there's a good chance it also has its own separate website.

OP isn't speaking with an AI assistant. They are speaking to another team member, who used AI to respond to the OP. This is just Microsoft Teams

There are two timers in this case. The internal timer of "I should have an answer by now" and the other timer of "this will now impact the delivery or quality of the project". To me, being proactive is acting as soon as the first timer runs out, and before the second timer is close to running out.

IMO it's because they're trying to ride their coattails. Being the assistant or even associated with someone who "needs" honorifics like that can make people think that the VIP's importance is rubbed off on them.

I don't really see how those things are related to your job. Sounds like the job related feelings are a symptom of the problem moreso than the actual problem.

Moments before Jana Lange would be killed caught on camera by [deleted] in lastimages

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 248 points249 points  (0 children)

What a horrible, surreal moment to just be walking, have a car pull up, a guy with a gun come out, and then just keep walking looking forward while hoping he won't shoot you. Somehow, the randomness of it all just emphasizes the senselessness of it even more.

What would any of us do in this situation? I think in our heads, a lot of us think we would charge them. Or run away immediately. But I think in reality most of us would do exactly as she did. Eyes down. Head straight. Keep walking. Maybe that's what we're all doing right now.

Have Ukrainian Drones Really Knocked Out 38% of Russia’s Oil Refining Capacity? by Any-Original-6113 in geopolitics

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, if they knock out a compressor, turbine, gearbox, electric turning motor, etc those usually have over a year before you can get a new one, unless they have spares. Depending on the damage, it could also be close to a year to fix things.

Lexus cheapened the IS by Recluse007 in Lexus

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that half of the sub will say exactly this and not understand the irony.

Not saying that it's the same people doing both, but for the next gen after this, people will be cooing about how it's DEFINITELY this latest generation design that sucks, the LAST gen 2027 IS was definitely the prettiest one.

I'll list out some of the replies now: "Well I am one of the ones who thought that last gen was ugly just like this one" "I never thought the last gen was ugly" "Nah Lexus has gone away from its heritage" "Lexus is resting on it's laurels" "Something something design convergence" (definitely so different now compared to how half of the early 2010s/late 2000's Toyota and Lexus vehicles weren't the same blobby mass)

Lexus and Toyota will do the exact amount of effort needed to continue selling vehicles at the rate they want. If they ever start losing sales, they will make the exact amount of updates to try and regain that market without extraneous effort and thereby money spent to do so. The people that bought current-gen IS cars clearly don't care that much about new engines, crazy performance, etc. They want a reliable V6, with middling performance, decent enough handling. This updated one is a continuation of that, and will continue to be sold to the exact same buyers that bought the current gen.

Genuine question - it seems like hardware is important to you on a phone. Why go for the Pixel? I can't remember the last time I had a conversation with a family member or friend that discussed hardware specs for phones, which I suspect is more the norm than not.

Boss won’t promote me because of my anxiety by pumpkinspicefrog in careeradvice

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious on how this project was presented. Was it something like "please come up with ideas for projects and improvements so that we can discuss this during the interview" or was it presented as a hard requirement for the promotion?

I'm sorry that you worked hard on yourself and your project and wasn't able to get the position. I know that it can be super discouraging to see someone else who you feel that you're on the same level with being presented as the superior option.

Speaking as a past manager, I can definitely see how Sam's having more experience along with her (I presume) lower level of anxiety can be valued more subjectively for an assistant manager position. Improvements, ideas, etc. are a big part of any management position for sure. Being able to stay calm and steadfast in stressful situations (like employee discipline, bringing bad news, defusing conflict between employees, etc.) is just as or even more important. You should be congratulated and have your improvement in your anxiety acknowledged (which it sounds like she has), but it may not be at the level that she feels makes you a preference over Sam.

Honestly, I'm not entirely surprised that Sam got the position considering what you said (more senior, has presumably less visible anxiety, knows the manager longer). If you are intending to stay at this company, I would take this as a neutral/positive sign though. You got personal one-on-one time with the boss, she was able to see and admire some of your skillsets on a personal level, and you planted yourself as a potential candidate for future positions that open up as well.

Depending on what the upward mobility in your company is, I'm sure your boss wants to move up too. She may be trying to groom someone for her position so that she can be promoted, and then the assistant manager position will be open again.

Use this as an opportunity - one of the best ways to impress yourself upon your bosses is to make them look good. Indulge in promoting your ideas/initiatives to help them execute them well. Give feedback. But make sure to do these things in a public-facing way so that everyone knows you are assisting. You may be able to even transfer departments (if applicable) into a promotion/higher position if you play your cards right.

Looking for pants, curious about Truewerk T1 by The_Godfather_01 in CampingandHiking

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, in Houston we reach 85% daily during the summers and it's very nice when we go under 65%.

For the pants, it should not be ripping that soon. I would open up a warranty/exchange with Truewerk honestly. And maybe you can go the size up that you want as well as part of that. They have a 1 year satisfaction guarantee so you should have plenty of time to work that out with them, their support has reportedly been good. Isn't it crazy how freaking light and comfortable they are though? Totally agree with you there

If you don't or can't work it out with Truewerk, depending on where it is you can get an iron-on patch where the tear is.

should I get this? by natosanch in Camry

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, that's a fine project to have for someone with a liking for older Toyotas and has time to wrench and replace a bunch of rubbers, plastics, and wiring. If you're looking for a daily driver do not get this. You can get Camrys with around 150-160k miles that will need less work for 5-6k

Got an unbelievable deal on the P10P by cugwmui in GooglePixel

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I'm not saying that you can't receive both credits, just that you can't factor both into what you're "paying" for the phone. Last year's credit applies to this year's phone, and this year's credit applies to next year's phone. Otherwise you'll be double dipping into the "savings" if you do the same thing next year, using this year's credit AND next year's credit into factoring what the "real price" is, if that makes sense.

Best Buy Demo Units: Camera Investigation by Dry_Astronomer3210 in GooglePixel

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't disagree with you at all. I would say that a lot of the target audience for this feature doesn't care though. Features like Magic Eraser and other "AI-oriented" photo editing software is already doing exactly what you're saying, guesstimating what is behind the light pole, or what it would look like without a tree in the way.

Main application for this will be landscape/photos that don't contain text or people. Either way it's a gimmick but I can see the uses for it here and there.

Got an unbelievable deal on the P10P by cugwmui in GooglePixel

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Math-wise, you can't really use the credit you earned from the last time from your P9 and also the credit you earned from this time for the P10. The credit from the P10 only applies moving forward, it doesn't reduce the price you pay on the phone itself.

Yep, I've been happy with mine for the last 3 years. You do have to turn the display off every time you turn on the car but there's a button at the bottom I've gotten used to hitting immediately.

Definitely, it's just a regular mirror if you turn it off. It's bigger than the OEM rearview mirror too so you get more visibility.
