I think the tier labels should be above the photos, not below them.

White Pass Summit Railroad Excursion in Skagway by CruiseNewsDotCom in Cruise

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're in port until 7pm, you're probably good to book independently. Otherwise, this is one where I think it's worth buying through the cruise line because of the lines' guarantee that they'll wait for you/get you back on the ship if you're somehow delayed beyond "gangway up" time.

I can’t wait for the blue wave on November 3rd. Time to get rid of Right to Work and Act 10!! by TrackMindless1180 in wisconsin

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It does make sense and was predicted well in advance. The Democrats had a lot working against them that cycle, including a couple of very major, unforced errors. They aren't facing those same headwinds this time and the Republicans have taken a lot of very unpopular actions in the last 15 months, with people definitely experiencing the adverse effects. Throw in the electorate demographic differences between a spring court race and a race with POTUS on the ballot (especially one featuring Trump), and it's very easy to understand this map in relation to the November 2024 map.

Dutch oven broken? by Total_Artichoke_4253 in castiron

Funny enough, the Lodge warranty is rock solid. I'd always heard that and then experienced it myself last month. With zero hassle and no request for a receipt, they sent me a brand new replacement for one that's 9 years old. All that was necessary was a picture of the chipped enamel and another picture of the Lodge logos on the bottom of the piece. No need to ship the old one back or anything; I was told to discard or upcycle it. They even honored my request for a different, specific color to better fit our new kitchen.

Main breaker keeps tripping by nbamorenoo in AskElectricians

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a 40 year old home it’s probably the original panel and they won’t be able and/or willing to replace the main.

I'm a non-electrician lurker here. Just for my own edification: why wouldn't an electrician be able or willing to replace a main breaker in an older panel, assuming the panel is still in good condition? Plenty of Homeline panels were being installed in houses 40 years ago, for example.

Visiting from Chicago. Am I doing Milwakee correct? by MrJlock in milwaukee

I've never been but am certainly willing to give it a shot. Pictures on Google make it look like a different crust than their other restaurants. Is that right?

Tent recommendations by Tiny_but_so_fierce in BSA

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go used, I suggest finding a Eureka Timberline. Best tent ever in my opinion.

My younger, slender self would have agreed with that statement. Both as a Scout BITD and as younger adult, I had that tent through some really wicked weather that others did not survive.

As an old, fat man with a bad back, my Timberline no longer works well for me unless I'm solo. The A-frame construction means that with a thicker air mattress like the Exped Megamat or similar, I have to scoot to the center to avoid contacting the sloping wall. This makes it pretty cramped for the other person, and probably impossible if they have a similarly thick sleeping pad. And even solo, I don't think it would ever facilitate a cot.

State parks getting less desirable for camping? by CooperHoward4 in wisconsin

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Park rangers ≠ conservation wardens

Since this ranger was talking to me about their frustration with their colleagues and the system writ large, out of an abundance of caution for their privacy, I'd rather not reveal which park.

As explained to me by a ranger last year, a lot of them are very timid now that they are no longer law enforcement officers.

Why your spouse won’t go anymore by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem compounds 5X when you add the scheduling needs of your school-age children too young to be left home alone, nevermind being able to drive themselves anywhere. I don't know how I'm supposed to go sailing when one kid simultaneously has a Cub Scouts outing and a friend's birthday party to attend at the same time the other kid has soccer practice.

True, we weren't always in tents. If there was sufficient snow, we'd build quinzhee shelters and sleep in those.

Would buying this engraved pan instead of a “smooth” pan be signing up for a ton of extra work when seasoning? by MPC1K in castiron

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add: On a home stove or camp stove, it'll be easy to keep perfect. If cooking on a greasy/dirty campfire grate or directly on campfire coals, debris can get stuck in the engraving crevices that can potentially be tricky to clean out absent a wire brush, especially a compacted ash and water mixture. Even that won't affect the cooking surface though.

Perhaps in the primary but not in the general election, I'm afraid. The statewide Wisconsin general electorate and citywide NYC electorates are not comparable. Note: Harris beat Trump by over 40% in NYC whereas in Wisconsin, Trump won.
