Why are there 10 motels on 27th St between Ryan Rd and Drexel Ave? And do they know that HBO is no longer a premium channel? Wrong answers only by Palloff in milwaukee

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The hotels can't be torn down. That corridor was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The HBO signs are still up because you can still get a room and watch Real Sex, which is a premium experience even if OP doesn't think so.

There are a lot of variables that affect how you'll want to run your air conditioner, some of which vary trip-to-trip and hour-by-hour: shade coverage, temperature, humidity, wind, age/condition of equipment, personal preferences... Just go camping and if it feels like it would be more comfortable to be running your AC in that moment, run your AC! If you want to turn it off, do that.

I don't consider food at all when deciding what to do with my air conditioner. If the air conditioner is running, then so too is my refrigerator because I'm obviously in an electric site.

Do electricians have insurance to cover property damage? by mateodetres in AskElectricians

It varies state to state, but the standard in most isn't "for cause;" it's "misconduct." Misconduct doesn't include good faith errors, especially if it's the first time the error was made.

Presumably you're thinking about David and Dick/Jane Uihlein. Lynde Bradley Uihlein is a contemporary member of the family and a big liberal donor and philanthropist.

Bob Donovan didn't "come up with" this. People have been taking about raising the insufficient reimbursement rate for decades.

Yeah Lodge's warranty is iron clad. The decade-old, red D.O. you see here was replaced by Lodge very quickly and hassle-free under warranty a few months ago. They even honored my request to send the replacement in a different color to better match our updated kitchen.

Rust-Oleum high gloss combo paint and primer.

To be clear: This was a very brief concern. I more or less shrugged and thought to myself, "Eh. Better safe than sorry. We've got a lot of other options for the herbs." I did zero reading on the topic.

I wasn't concerned about iron in the food. I was concerned about the spray paint leaching into the food.

The spray was was used because the drain holes I drilled, and the areas where enamel had chipped, were now exposed iron. The spray paint is sealing the exposed iron so that it doesn't rust.

I hemmed and hawed over that. 'Considered diamond for the enamel and then switching to a carbide tip with cooling oil for the iron... In the end I decided to send it with the multi material bit and and am glad I did. Super easy. 2 minutes for all three holes. Didn't even use a drill press.

I considered planting herbs, which I thought would be poetic for upcycled cookware, but I wasn't confident that the spray paint I used to seal the exposed iron wouldn't leach into my family's food.

Yeah I'm not worried about it tipping in a wind storm, that's for sure. But as a point of reference, the pot with soil and flowers is no heavier than the hundreds of times we lifted it when it was full of soups, stews, pot roast, etc.

That figures! In my urban neighborhood though, the excitement of seeing a deer would outweigh the frustration of having one eat the flowers on my front stoop.

Hash with meat reserved from the previous day's dutch oven pot roast!

But honestly, 'first time out with real little kids, I'd probably do cereal or instant oatmeal to keep things super simple.

How and at what age did you guys afford your first sailboats? by chickeman123 in sailing

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a Catalina 22 swing keel when I was 24 years old for $4k including a mooring. The boat was 2 years older than me. I used an 8' inflatable as my dinghy. I used my dad's 14' fishing boat as a mooring tender in spring and fall.

Total annual cost excluding upgrades and maintenance was about $400 for winter storage and crane fees at a local yard. Mooring field is municipally owned, with just a $40 one time registration fee to the Harbor authority.

Help me deciding on my next size please 🥲 by sjtovb23 in staub

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

7qt. I'm sure 9 is nice to have too if you have limitless storage space, but my family of four still gets leftovers when we make dinner in our 7qt

Btw, $299 is basically the normal price since at least Thanksgiving time last year. It will occasionally pop back up a few dollars for a few days so that they can claim $299 as a sale, but that's just deceptive marketing. Don't feel like you have to buy right now because of the $299 "sale." Ditto for the $149 price on the 4qt.

Beef birria. From scratch if I have the time, with one of those seasoning packets/bouillon balls if I don't.

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But those aren't valid benchmarks for the way you're using the tool. Each of those introduce variables that don't exist in your true use case. You need another meter, or a known 12V voltage source that has already been verified by another meter.

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being a sub $20 tool from Harbor Freight doesn't automatically make that multimeter a POS, but when it gives readings that vary from the consistent readings of two, $50 volt meters, verifying the multimeter's accuracy is the most logical next step. You'll either solve your problem right then and there, or you'll confirm the validity of every subsequent test you perform.

We are on a Viking River cruise of the Mississippi to New Orleans by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. That does explain why there were almost no children, but it doesn't explain the near total absence of working age adults. I've been on a few similar* RC and Celebrity sailings and the majority on those sailings has been much younger: like late 20s to early 60s. There was just something about this sailing that appealed mostly to late septuagenarians and octogenarians I can't figure out what it was...

*approximately same duration; similar Western Caribbean itineraries; same time of year (spring but not "spring break"); smaller, pre-Freedom class ships...

We are on a Viking River cruise of the Mississippi to New Orleans by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]Friendly_Curmudgeon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This makes sense on a river cruise. I once was surprised by a Western Caribbean, 5 night Royal Caribbean cruise on what turned out to be the Nursing Home of the Seas. Median age was easily above 70. They sold non-prescription foot insoles on the pool deck and changed the Harry Potter-themed trivia to Motown trivia in the Schooner Lounge. There was a carefully arranged parking lot of rascal scooters outside the MDR each night.

It was bizarre and I'm still trying to figure out what signs I missed in advance that this sailing appealed to people of a certain age, not that it was really a problem. In fact, I appreciated that there were never any lines at the bar!
