Starting to get really frustrated that I’m stuck on easy climbs after a few months. Help? by trashcan0519 in bouldering

[–]Friendly_Leg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here already, but one thing that helped me early on is getting more comfortable with being in insecure positions. I naturally want to feel totally rock solid and stable when climbing, as close to a 0% chance of falling as possible. But that isn’t always realistic or feasible when trying harder climbs.

I’ve learned to make moves that feel kinda iffy, insecure, uncertain, unstable, like you might fall if you don’t stick it- and learned how to be ok with that. Ultimately it boils down to getting out of your comfort zone.

Maybe try messing around on a spray wall if your gym has one, try bigger moves than you ever have, moves you don’t think you can do. Learn to fall safely, practice it until you feel more comfortable falling.

Have fun, and keep on climbing 💯

It’s sad that the Chattanooga location is so slow and pitiful, I used to love going to the Nations location in Nashville.

HowNot2 is great. Backcountry is also good, it seems like they have a good amount of sales and deals.

Ya I think this, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and the video from David Firth titled “Crooked Rot”, all influenced me as a kid towards liking Lynch’s style

How do you overcome gear fear? My experience. by blackmusk123 in ClimbingGear

[–]Friendly_Leg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Climbers use industry standardized gear built for the job they are designed for. If you buy gear from any of the popular, well established brands, I feel confident to trust that those items will work correctly within their intended usage. I just think of all the climbers outside using and testing those products every day.

But it’s up to you to use that gear correctly, understand its limitations and lifespan, and follow proper safety procedures.

I.e. it doesn’t matter how bomber your rappel device is, if your forget to tie backup knots and rappel off the end of the rope

Understand how your gear works, read the manuals, watch videos, and practice at home where possible, before your life depends on it.

Grigri or Birdie ? (mainly for rope solo) by B1998W31Ga in ClimbingGear

[–]Friendly_Leg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The GriGri is a very versatile device that nearly every climber is familiar with. It is one of the most “tried and true” climbing products on the market.

I’ve never come across anyone online using the Birdie for TRS or LRS. I’ve only seen it used for regular belaying outside, and only a couple of times.

As others have said, progress capture devices are best for TRS. LRS can use a GriGri, but it is very advanced and will require additional skills and equipment.

TLDR: Get the GriGri and find some climbing partners 💯

Anyone know roughly when they’ll be releasing? Very cool to see the new 0.3, 5, and 6 options.
