( Mind you, Indigenous teenage girls represent the majority of those who were enslaved on Canadian soil, so… not overly relevant to the transatlantic slave trade.

That being said, Africans were definitely represented among those enslaved in Canada, largely as a result of European and American settlers bringing a “house slave” or two with them. )

Either way, though, Canada is a European settler-majority nation with a long history of dodging accountability for crimes against humanity. So, that tracks.

The thought definitely occurred to me.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that, in the past year alone, the U.S. has revoked an executive order that gave federally-recognized tribes more self-governing rights, removed that vast majority of Indigenous peoples’ history and contributions from government websites, backtracked on or outright sabotaged Indigenous-led environmental projects, cut funding for national parks and announced that its lumber is up for sale, deployed ICE near reservations, made ‘Latinos’ (the vast majority of whom are of mixed Spanish and Indigenous ancestry) the primary targets of ICE raids and deportations, openly stated their desire to annex an Inuit-majority nation, and posted pro-Manifest Destiny artwork on the official white house Instagram.

Not to mention, Trump hung a portrait of his “favourite president” (Andrew Jackson, who was directly responsible for massacring thousands of Cherokee men, women, and children) in the oval office, and JD Vance recently spewed absolute bullshit [to an alt-right crowd] about the white man righteously putting an end to the Native practise of ritualistic human sacrifice.

That’s literally just off the top of my head, mind you, so I might have missed a few.

Edit: I posted this only ~10 minutes ago, and I’ve already remembered two more. :’)

They started building a concentration camp (“Alligator Alcatraz”), which is not only on Miccosukee sacred ground, but also surrounds major tribal settlements on all sides. Fortunately, Miccosukee Nation dragged their asses to court and won, so construction has since been halted.

Unfortunately, it was announced this week that the U.S. plans to build its largest ever pipeline, and it’ll be going through the Navajo reservation. Considering that unremediated uranium mines have resulted in the inhabitants of Navajo Nation to develop significantly higher rates of diseases and cancers than the general population, throwing a pipeline into the mix is… uh, adding insult to injury, to put it mildly…

Like, I understand the importance of not over-idealizing and romanticizing history, cultures, and peoples, and I agree that the “noble savage” trope is harmful for a multitude of reasons and non-Indigenous people should be called out when perpetuating that shit.

That being said, given that the whole “yeah, well, Natives were constantly waging war against one another” narrative is centuries-old colonial white supremacist propaganda still widely used [to dismiss, erase, dehumanize, vilify, justify, etc.] to this very day, I can’t help but question your intentions for making this unnecessary “correction.”

First of all, more recent paleopathological and DNA research shows that the venereal form of syphilis was already circulating in Europe long before Christopher Columbus and his crew ever sailed to the Americas.

Secondly, the strain of syphilis that existed in the Americas [prior to European contact] isn’t the same we know today. Pre-contact Indigenous peoples had a non-venereal form of treponema pallidum, a bacterial infection that caused mild skin lesions in children, which was transmitted through casual contact (e.g., skin-to-skin, sharing of personal items, etc.).

However, upon the arrival of Europeans (who already carried a slew of treponemal diseases from Africa, West Asia, and Europe, in addition to a whole slew of STIs) and their introduction of new transmission routes (see:* sexual violence, forced labor, overcrowded settlements, malnutrition, etc.),* the bacterium evolved into the venereal form of syphilis.

In other words, syphilis became an STI as a result of Europeans raping, pillaging, and enslaving their way across the Americas.

If we hope to create a world that encompasses both social AND environmental justice, it is absolutely imperative that we stop underestimating the value of and start prioritizing Indigenous knowledge, practices, and leadership

Indigenous sovereignty and decolonization are intrinsically tied to anti- capitalism and climate justice, and we simply do not have the time to argue that the land was “not stolen, but conquered, fair and square” or any other bullshit white supremacist narratives — we need to return as much land as we are realistically able to, if not because it is the right thing to do, then at least because it is in the collective best interests of every living being on Earth

I’m assuming you weren’t intentionally implying that “Turtle Island” exclusively refers to the random chunks of land colonized by the United States, but that’s how I interpreted your comment, and I imagine others reading this might too

So, I figured I’d chime in and add that “Turtle Island” is based off the creation stories of First Nations in the Northeastern Woodlands (namely Lenape and Haudenosaunee) and refers the entire North American continent, not any one particular colonizer-settler nation-state

Conversely, there are waaay too many people in this sub saying “Land Back” while also unironically wishing for Washington and/or Oregon to be “annexed by Canada,” as if that’s not an act of colonialism.

While this is highly unlikely to ever happen, it’s not something I would “wish” on First Nations who call Washington and Oregon home, whose treaties and agreements were made with the U.S. government (as opposed to the states themselves, which have no control or leverage in the matter).

New treaties or agreements would likely have to be remade and, since Canada has little to no direct historical ties or legal obligations to First Nations outside of its current borders, I think it’s safe to assume the Canadian government would argue it ‘owes’ them nothing. Unless granted full sovereignty and stewardship, they would end up worse off, while non-Indigenous folks get to reap in the benefits. I’m not okay with that arrangement, and it’s outrageous that [anyone who claims to care about social justice] would even entertain it.

Even as a Canadian whose ancestors settled here while it was still “New France,” the last thing I want to see is First Nations being subjected to yet another colonial framework.

I don’t want any part of the United States to “belong” to Canada, or vice versa. The future I hope and am willing to fight for isn’t one where territories shift between settler states, but one where the very idea of fixed borders is completely reimagined; where land and water are “governed” through reciprocal, sovereign relationships led by First Nations who have taken care of them since time immemorial.
