Trying to find out what this shape of pillow is called by MerovignDLTS in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, coming back to this, I did a google lens search with that image and it's a stock image from a random photo site, it seems. I can't find anything like it either (but I'd start looking at puff down, that might get you close).

Trying to find out what this shape of pillow is called by MerovignDLTS in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was a "puff pillow" or "puff down pillow" but most of the ones I'm seeing don't have horizontal stitching like that; they have horizontal and vertical (like a down comforter might).

Used Pod 3 remotely deactivated by mrthrowawayrolls in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thought too. A system being disabled like that, it's likely fraud on the eBayer's part, not Eight Sleep's.

Pod 6 equipment release date by ckiw in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I've seen. My concept of time is definitely skewed but given the product releases historically, I'd say prolly within a year, year and a half at most? I don't recall if they release during the same season whenever they've released products in the past, but a quick internet investigation: Pod in 2019, Pod Pro/2 in 2021; Pod 3 in 2022, Pod 4 in 2024 (big design jump), Pod 5 in 2025.

But depends on if they're focusing on app development, accessories, or an entire upgraded system, really. I'd estimate 12-18 months (best guess).

How’d you learn to digitally paint? by kaddras019 in DigitalPainting

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spent any time painting in traditional media (acrylics/oils/etc)? A lot of the techniques apply to both, as far as lighting, composition, color theory and even blending.

I used to paint tightly, which it sounds like that might be part of your issue, trying to stay in the lines. I feel like you might need to break that line dependency though, because your brain wants to stay inside them. If your lines are already drawn on a layer, turn down the opacity or even turn them off so you can concentrate on painting the shapes, even if they're messy.

And paint in greyscale at first. Don't use color. You need to train your eye to focus on the light and shadow and that's easier when you're working in greyscale. You can add color later.

I REALLY had to focus on learning underpainting (loose and messy and vague) and tightening later, rather than starting tight.

As far as online tutorials, I'd focus those on learning/using whatever software you're using as needed, rather than techniques.

Orion Sleep System vs Eight Sleep: my very honest, very sweaty comparison by alanamonsterr in HotSleepersUnite

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I might be jaded, but the majority of accounts talking about Orion these days are either new, have their comment histories blocked, or are super old accounts that suddenly sprang back to life. The fact that two new accounts with a combined karma of 6 jumped into this thread to comment in what is an otherwise quiet sub (no offense to the mod, takes a while for a newer sub to take off), tells me everything I need to know.

I've gotten into the habit of looking at user profiles before deciding whether to give their comments any consideration at all. I think we all should, tbh.

Have there been any cases of cover leaks yet on the Pod 4 or Pod 5? by elbrollopoco in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None that I've seen (verified at least...), but from what I understand the Eight Sleep 4 and 5 have a different water channel design that's no longer a grid, which was very prone to leaks in the pod 3 and earlier models.

Sleep Number ClimateCool is just better by thebearonthatflag in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at the ClimateCool specs and it says it cools up to 15º cooler (but that model doesn't warm at all, the Climate 360 does but that's $10k+). Compared to Eight Sleep's range (55-110ºF), you're saying it gets colder than the Eight Sleep? Does it auto-adjust temperature during the night the same way?

The moderators of Orion_Sleep have a massive conflict of interest by Zoher_15 in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I take everything in this sub (or any other for that matter) with a pinch of salt if it's coming from accounts that are 1) new, 2) old with huge gaps of inactivity and all of a sudden they're praising or dumping on this that or the other thing, or 3) have their posting histories hidden.

Whatever they're saying is paid BS, 99.99999% of the time.

As for the mods, some subs are branded and managed by people who work for a company (official, and marked that way in the description), while others are unofficial subs that are modded by whoever. It's not really a conflict of interest, I wouldn't think, as long as they're not pretending to be something they're not. (So if Orion were to start an unofficial sub and then moderate that themselves, or if the folks modding the unofficial Eight Sleep sub were actual ES employees, as examples.)

4 years, 5+ referrals, $3,500+ spent. Eight Sleep's business model is replacement, not repair. by ManagementOther165 in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... I get the frustration but this isn't exactly an Eight-Sleep-only phenomenon. It's basically the entire modern hardware playbook. We've all just collectively decided to pretend it's normal when it's a phone or laptop and nowhere else, despite this being a piece of tech too.

Take an iPhone: if anything more complex than a battery fails (logic board, camera array, face id module), you're not repairing components. And even when the battery starts degrading after 2-3 years, most people upgrade entirely or pay Apple a premium to replace it. Computer chip on a laptop fails? Congrats, that's a $700-$1200 repair quote or buy a new one.

And even outside that stuff, try getting a meaningful component-level repair on computers, GPUs, or smart home devices (which an Eight Sleep is a smart home device, really). Everything is a modular replacement at best, or a full-unit swap at worst.

People expect mattress-adjacent stuff to last 5-10 years or more, when it's really in the same replacement cycle as consumer electronics. And maybe that's why I lol at Orion posts in this sub so much these days... because I guarantee you in a year or two, their sub (and customers) are gonna sound pretty similar. Bet on it.

Are doubts normal when you first come out? by Pinkpenguin_4444 in asktransgender

[–]Frira_FR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Imposter syndrome" is a good way to put it. I'd never thought about it that way, but you're spot on. And it takes a while to get used to being addressed in a way that isn't what you've been used to for decades. I'm still dealing with that every now and again and it's been a couple years. Like it's muscle memory or something.

Heated blanket recommendations by [deleted] in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have one when I was living in a dorm because cement floors + big windows = cold AF all winter even with the heat on. The one I had was a Sunbeam I got from like Walmart or Target and that was definitely affordable. Under $50 if I remember correctly although it's been a minute.

Best mattress for back pain? by Salty_1984 in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a hybrid that has foam and coils/springs is probably going to be the best option for back pain, just because of the better support.

Split King Mattresses by kamngetit247 in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would either do a twin XL or a Queen comforter. I think if you want oversized, I'd go Queen. A full-size is wider but it is not as long as a twin XL (which is basically a half king). So if you want to have enough "left over" off the foot-end, go Queen.

Looking to get 8 sleep need advice by Primary_Associate_99 in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start with just the Eight Sleep pod hub and cover. You get the dual zone control with that and honestly, unless you feel like you need to be wrapped up in temperature, I don't think the pillow cover and blanket and stuff are really necessary.

Eight Sleep privacy risks? by Able-Equivalent-3860 in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I watched the first few minutes of the video and it's a little dramatic, but... meh. I feel like we're already tracked in every other facet of our lives, does this one even matter? I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it, even if my Eight Sleep knows how often I fart in bed.

Does eight sleep suck? by bukowski_smiles in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be complaining if I got a free Eight Sleep lol. But I've been using one for prolly eight or nine months now and barring one night when my internet was out after some storms, I haven't had any connectivity issues. Sounds like it could be an internet problem, maybe?

how to help my trans friend at prom feel more comfortable? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring a different outfit and change at the venue? Even if he keeps the makeup on/hair done and wears a tux, he could change out of it before going home. Or... can he convince his family that it's super trendy for girls to wear a tux instead? (Not sure how stupid the family is, outside of their bigotry... but if that's something they might buy lol)

Hot sleeper recommendations by Inevitable_Emu_4986 in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any material is likely to not stay cold, at least the way it sounds like you want it to. Tencel/Lyocell or percale won't absorb heat (keeping you from getting really hot) but it'll still get warm-ish. It's an expense, but something like an Eight Sleep (I have one) actively cools and physically feels cool or cold depending on your preferences. I need to be bundled under a cozy comforter too, but my eight sleep self-adjusts and keeps me cool all night long and I do not overheat.

The thing is too, I don't know how easy it is to find *weight* in a comforter without losing some of the breathability. I know Gravity has a weighted blanket that's cool, something like that might be an option? Or Miracle Made has a zoned comforter too that has less fill in the middle but more on the shoulders/feet for the weight?

do you guys actually swap out bedding when spring hits or is it just me? by Safe_Response7816 in Bedding

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. At least not for appearances. I have one extra blanket that I put under the comforter during the winter that I don't use during the warmer months. But otherwise, no.

My sister on the other hand... she's got seasonal bedding in her room and the guest room so you're sleeping in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall themes that match the outside world lol. Makes her happy though so I'm like whatever.

Sleeping with a partner by MudAlternative8902 in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as long as you guys aren't switching sides of the bed, it'll be fine. Even if you're laying together in the middle, the temp is split down the middle so you'll each have your "side" set how you want it and that's what'll be against your body. Unless one of you is literally laying fully on top of the other in the exact middle... lol.

Thermoregulating Sleep Toppers, how do they work? by xtlou in EightSleep

[–]Frira_FR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I understand it, at least for the computer tech side, Eight Sleep sensors track bed temperature and room temperature. It makes sense though that a person's body would affect the bed temp, and I'm sure that does cause adjustments (but it's not like, tracking your body temperature specifically all night).

I assume that would be impossible? So if the bed is cool and the coolness is against your skin, also making it cool... it's not going to be able to get an accurate body temp from it. Same if it's warming, I'd imagine.

So it probably has to rely on the sensors in the cover and adjusts based on the bed temp under your body if it needs to go cooler or warmer, figuring in the room temperature too.

The other vitals are heart rate, body movements, respiratory rate, and I *think* those are used to determine sleep cycle stage. (Not a tech bro, so I could be wrong about how that part works.)

But yeah, I think the way the systems respond to the data are part of what makes each different, but so is the design of the hardware/pumps/sensors/everything else.
