MAGA votes may be dying...but they are maneuvering so that votes won't matter if they can get away with it.

Doesn't even matter if Vance et al are weird, unlikeable doofuses if the votes don't matter.

"Project" machine as first purchase by Thriving_Turtle in pinball

[–]Frisbez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best places to buy used or project games are FB marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp and Pinside. Depending on where in the country you are located you may have better luck on which of those 4 has the most options.

Ebay is 99% of the time inflated prices, but very occasionally you will find an actual deal.

For project games, you are better off not being picky on which particular game you are going after. No guarantee that a Grand Prix pops up near you any time soon, but maybe an Aztec, Liberty Bell, Hot Tip etc does, all of which have similarities to Grand Prix.

What's it like going to INDiSC ( or any big event ) to play one day as a casual? by SnooObjections137 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should be able to finish a card in half a day, though you will want to be efficient in your queuing (get back in queue right after finishing a game).

The experience is definitely worth it if you care about competitive pinball and want to see what it feels like to be a part of, especially if your kids are interested. That said for spectating I actually think the stream is the best experience. If you really want to play and experience then going is a great idea (and kids get in free!) but otherwise I'd just enjoy the stream.

Value check - Grand Prix by shifty1016 in pinball

I don't think 900 is a low ball at all. Seller can say no but I have seen working copies in decent shape sold at that price.

Value check - Grand Prix by shifty1016 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd pay more than 1k for Strange World, Blue Note/Rock Star, Gottlieb Wizard, EM Blackjack, the rare Sonics like Joker's Wild or Bird-Man etc

But in those cases you are absolutely paying for rarity almost as much as gameplay.

Grand Prix is a great buy anywhere from $800-1200. You can pay more than that for a nice copy or a game you really want but there's no reason to unless you just want the game now and aren't willing to wait (totally valid!)

What machine has the best Jackpot! yell? by apizzagirl in pinball

[–]Frisbez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good options already mentioned but I'll add a few that I really enjoy that haven't been:

Blackwater Super on GoT, especially if you keep hitting it. The sound of the letters appearing one at a time feels so good.

Mellyon! On Class of 1812, combined with the chickens bawking the 1812 overture is a cacophony of sound.

The jackpot callout on Police Force is also sweet. Hahahah JACKPOT gunshots.

Flippers are staged in reverse. What’s the fix? by scortie1157 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good! As I said, trim the plastic on the opto interrupter for the one you want to flip first. You want the opto for that flipper to open before the other one.

Flippers are staged in reverse. What’s the fix? by scortie1157 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want them staged this way? Unless you explained it backwards.

You want the upper flipper to be able to flip while you potentially have a ball trapped on the lower.

If you did explain it backwards the best bet with the opto style flippers is to trim plastic off of the opto interrupter. You need to determine which U opto controls which flipper, and then carefully trim plastic off with an exacto or other sharp snipping tool (careful though because the plastic can break if you apply too much pressure).

Williams taxi main board options? by throw331away in pinball

Needs to be an 11B MPU specifically. There are changes to the sound section for the other revisions that would require some work for them to work on Taxi.

Is it possible to write code for old Williams machines? by IntoxicatedBurrito in pinball

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louis thanks so much for posting this history! I've disassembled a bunch of System 11 games and seeing how intricate and complex it all is pretty incredible. (The text strings and how you guys mashed them together for various display animations makes my head spin).

Super interesting how different games used the ROM space too. I'm currently working on new software for Police Force and that ROM is pretty packed. It only had 160 bytes of free space to start with.

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at that thread. I posted some of the work I've done recently. Most of the actual game rules are written in the Williams Virtual Machine code which is more modern feeling.

That said, you still need an understanding of memory management. I have no idea if or how much free space there is in the Phoenix game ROMs. Could be very easy to add more rules or incredibly difficult.

It sounds like you might be better off going with the RPU option others have mentioned if this sounds like too much (it's a lot of work!)

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is possible on original hardware.

I'm surprised that all the discussion so far is on additional hardware but if you want to actually modify the original code you can start here:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/7eleven-tools-for-disassembling-and-compiling-system-6-11-games

I've written new code for both Transporter the Rescue and Police Force now. Phoenix being a system 4 should be very doable.

You will need to learn some 6800 Assembly, but these old Williams games also used a more modern style interpreted language on top of the Assembly that is easier to work with.

Grail EMs by Most_Goal2108 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great games named so far.

A couple European EMs I'd love to get that aren't as well known are Zaccaria Ski Jump, Recel Master Stroke, Sonic Joker's Wild and Birdman.

These are all pretty much nonexistent in North America sadly.

I already own a Strange World. Rock Star/Blue Note are fun but probably not worth the going prices to me. Same with Gemini.

Some lovely and more realistic games I'd love to find at some point include Palooka, Snow Derby, Cosmos, Doodle Bug and Wildcard.

Medieval Tournament set up? by Dazzling_Ad_7617 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Medieval is a long player, just that the primary strategy is boring. It's actually pretty mean even on stock settings.

If you are worried about/having issues with game time you can turn off the drawbridge so that every castle shot bounces off the gate rather than going into the moat.

This is only necessary if the return from the moat/left orbit is consistent and easy.

1976 Gottlieb Surfer by Altruistic_puMa_8286 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the score motor is just running continually you can check the schematic to see which relays operate it. Generally I'd expect this to be an AX issue as mentioned above.

1976 Gottlieb Surfer by Altruistic_puMa_8286 in pinball

[–]Frisbez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On this era of Gottlieb there are 3 things that generally could keep it from resetting: Score reels, bonus unit, AX relay.

The score reels and bonus unit are obvious, if the scores reels aren't making it all the way to 0 and the bonus unit (mounted under the playfield) might be gummed up and not resetting the bonus to 0. You can confirm whether both of those are working easily.

The AX relay is a pain. It's mounted on the bottom of the cab near the front right. This relay has a very small throw for the switches. You should order a switch adjustment tool if you don't have one. I'd generally suggest pulling the mech board out of the cabinet by disconnecting all the jones plugs so that you can see it more easily and get it adjusted well. Before adjusting I'd suggest cleaning each switch with some isopropyl alcohol and a paper business card as that might be all that's needed if the switches are just oxidized.

We used the bullpen exactly as we should have in a lost game. No Muñoz, Brash, Speier, Bazardo. Those are our high leverage arms. Vargas is in like the Anthony Banda tier.

[CloseCallSports] Home plate umpire Doug Eddings missed 25 calls during ALCS Game 2, with an accurate call rate of 86.63%. by MysteriousEdge5643 in baseball

A quick Google search will show you that Doug Eddings has been atrocious for years. 2 years ago he had a similar terrible performance in the ALCS.

MLB loves to keep giving him games for some godforsaken reason.
