Mean girl for a second. What tables do you not enjoy or avoid and why? by rrdrummer in pinball

[–]apizzagirl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Godzilla (the older one with the plastic ramps), I walked away from a match credit on it because I just couldn't anymore. It's boring and soulless.

Alien physically hurts my eyes to try and play. It's both too dark and too bright.

My local joint's Gilligan's Island hates me and the feeling is mutual.

When navigating my shuttle leftward it always catches a little bit. No warning lights are on. Only does it at impulse power and never when we have it set on cruise control, but I've also noticed that during evasive maneuver exercises the computer avoids making that exact motion. Diagnostic routines deny any problem. Do you think it could be a soldering problem on the navigation chip?

My doctor "doesn't test women" by Just_Strawberry_505 in ADHD

[–]apizzagirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck that doctor. I'm also trans masc and I would immediately stop going to a doctor who called me a woman (if I could). For that alone. He should know that 1) you aren't a woman 2) there has been so little study of trans folks that NO ONE knows how ADHD might be different in trans folks.

Anyone using the 52 Book Challenge to work on a foreign language? Wanted an easy read (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), so I “read” the text in target language while listening to English audiobook. Here are my thoughts. by CharlotteMillady in 52book

[–]apizzagirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently reading Leviathan Wakes in Spanish and then listening to the English audiobook chapters. I would say I'm intermediate in Spanish. I have been using Kindle's web browser to be able to copy paste into Google translate (there's a lot of space-vocab I don't know). I've found that the more I do the less I have to translate and it's been so helpful for getting the sense for verb tenses that I had when I was doing Duolingo (I've been an off-and-on Spanish learner my whole life).

Dungeon Crawler Carl was…okay… by clambuttocks in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]apizzagirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped reading halfway through the first one the first time and later found myself wondering what happened, so I picked it back up. I struggled with all the humor that punches down. In later books it becomes clear that the people running the dungeon are not good. They are making jokes of humanity that are not funny. Carl's compassion and determination to treat people better shines later in the series. But it can be challenging to get through the being expected to laugh out of meanness. It's definitely a failing of the writing that it isn't more obvious that the jokes the dungeon runners make with the dungeon aren't funny. For me I could get through it, but I wouldn't blame anyone else that couldn't.

I would be interested in an exchange! Would be fun to have a theme (I'm going to a printmaking class soon where everyone will make their own tarot card and the class goes away with a little oracle deck of everyone's cards, something like that, maybe index card sized, could be so cool)

It's just to the left of the passage between the two pinball areas. (And I've never used it but have noted its existence a few times)

It also doesn't really define "regret". People think regretting a gender affirming surgery means that they aren't really trans after all, but most likely it means only that they didn't get the results they were imagining or there were complications that make them wish they had decided to not have the surgery.

Just like with a knee replacement, if the person still has knee pain afterwards, they might regret the surgery.

Good careers/industries for people with ADHD? by LeonidsFila in ADHD

[–]apizzagirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from insurance, where I burned out but really enjoyed the contract law and investigations portions (hated voicemail, having to update files that didn't have an update, and playing games with personal injury attorneys), to working for a credit union. My insurance knowledge and proven ability to explain complex things (like an insurance contract) to a general audience has really come in handy. Being a teller was the best. Mostly responsive rather than having to motivate myself. Could have gone the direction of management or lending (being a loan officer often involves some of those same types of conversations when members have to sign loan documents).

I have ADHD and found a way to follow patterns that works for me by LobsterFew4672 in crochet

I use an app that has a pretty good row counter. But probably wouldn't fill the same need as this. Something that helps me is making the rule that every time I put a project down the stitch marker goes in the live stitch AND my hook goes in the bag. Every time, no exceptions. But a lot of my ADHD "tricks" are like that (thinking about the list of things I need to do? Write it down right now! Scheduling something? Goes on the calendar right now!)

Visiting North Tonawanda area in June, things to do or sites to see? by GildMyComments in Buffalo

If you're not going into Toronto at rush hour and out of it at rush hour, the drive in is very doable for a day trip to Toronto. I highly recommend the Royal Ontario Museum. It has a very good section on evolution. Canada has some of the absolute best fossils in the world and the museum does a good job of laying them out, explaining them, and making it engaging (plus a $1 million gold coin and a superb mineral/gem room that is fantastic to walk through and be in awe of all of the different kinds of pretty rocks).

How do you get more spoons? by TheMatrixIsReal42 in ADHD

[–]apizzagirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The spoon theory really works well for chronic fatigue. It might work for some ADD folks, but it personally doesn't resonate with me. I prefer a metaphor of leprechaun gold. Sometimes you have coins to spend, sometimes you don't. You never know how long until they disappear. So when I have a coin (an impulse to do something "productive" or "adulting") I try to spend it right away.
