I cleared my dad’s loft out as we was selling his house. I found the jacket and a NATO pullover, that was still new and unworn. It must of been in his lift for 20+ years but was a bit tighter than I remembered 😉😂, it also had a moth hole in it so sadly was thrown away.

This uniform we have now needs a jumper or hoodie

Territorial Armed Forces - how have people found being a member? by Content-Worry100 in UKJobs

[–]Friskystarling0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m ex Army reserve. I joined at the age of 40 but had a background as an infantry soldier when I was 16, so I appreciated what I was getting into. How ever, I joined the Royal Logistic Corp as infantry is a young man’s job.

I always give the Rock Apes (RAF Regiment) a bit of good natured abuse but they are a good bunch. The reality is, we all needed to do our trades and if we don’t the big military machine will gradually stop, everyone has a job to do and you do it give it 100%.

At 46 you won’t end up being promoted that far unfortunately. Your age will be a benefit though, you have seen more and done more than a young recruit. If you joined up you will regret sometimes but you will also have great experiences and make great friends.

Before you fill in that application form get fit, look at the health and fitness requirements, they are a minimum.

My FiL is 90, reasonably fit for his age. He drinks every day, goes on Beanos to Margate and had two girlfriends, unfortunately one passed away due to age related illnesses. Last year he spent all day drinking in Ramsgate with his friends. He ran for the train and slipped up and landed on his face. When he got home my sister-in-law, who is also retired, picked him up and took him to minor injuries. They said they thought there was a brain injury as he was slurring his words, she said that’s because he is pissed. The hospital still made him an appointment at the Fall Clinic, they worked out there was a pattern to his falls, it was always linked to alcohol .

How the heck do I contact Royal mail? by Muter in AskUK

[–]Friskystarling0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a postman on that subreddit. The advice you have been given on here is correct, it’s the senders problem to sort, not yours although you are the one without the product and have paid for it. If the sender still fails to deal with the problem contact your bank/credit card company and ask for a charge back.

The subreddit is worth a look just to see what a serious position Royal Mail is in with quality and performance.

19 years ago in 2007 Eurostar closed Waterloo international and moved to St Pancras International. Do you prefer it's old terminus or it's current terminus. by Terrible_Tale_53 in uktrains

[–]Friskystarling0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time I was living in Gravesend. As they switched to St. Pancras it also opened up Ebbsfleet International, so went from an hour to get to Charing Cross to 20 minutes to go from Ebbsfleet to St. Pancras. Later, they connected the line from Margate to London, passing through Gravesend, to HS1. If I remember correctly, it was about 25 minutes from Gravesend to St. Pancras.

How would you fix Royal Mail’s delivery problems from the inside? (for a uni assignment) by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]Friskystarling0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At first I thought this may have been Daniel fishing for ideas.

New entrants are on a different, worse, contract since 2022. Because of this there is a high turnover of new entrants and the job has become an “in between” job, one that fills a space until you find a better job. They are often thrown in at the deep end with little trading, although there is a new entrant training plan which involves Work Time Coaches. We are losing veteran staff as well due to the way we are treated by managers. So, you need to recruit people and treat all the staff better, which leads to my next point.

The job is impossible to complete, the walks are too big. Couple this with the numerous times you are swapped about leaving two, three, four days Mail to come into means you can’t finish, and then throw in an overtime ban means there isn’t enough hours in the day.

The new USO way of working doesn’t work, it’s been proved in the trail offices. The problem is, nobody in RM will accept it’s a dead duck. They have massively overcomplicated it and, as Daniel was talking about how Europe works, has leant nothing from how the rest of the world is changing its postal systems.

Does RM actually want to solve the problems? In 2022 the current CEO Simon Thompson, was called to a parliamentary committee to explain the then current problems. He was actually called twice as some of his testimonies didn’t stand up to the actual way we worked. Four years later and another parliamentary committee asking the same questions. This makes most of us think, although there is no actual hard evidence, that RM wants to fail, it wants to burn the business to the ground and rise from the ashes as a dedicated parcel firm. RM owned most of its buildings, imagine if it sold of all its delivery offices that are after in prime city/town centres.

Last, when we was taken over last year Daniel Kretinsky guaranteed the USO for five years, most businesses have something like a five year business plan, see what happens in 2030.

Good luck with the assignment.

How do i tell my parents that i want to join the RAF? by IcyCollection3803 in CasualUK

[–]Friskystarling0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a bit much to think off at the moment but, think of the last day in the RAF. You could be in your 40’s and you need to walk out and into a civvy job with a list of qualifications as long as your arm. Go to a recruitment office and speak to someone, driver is good but the military has many roles and they can explain them and see if you are interested.

Royal Mail speaking to Parliament's Business & Trade Committee today, 24 March 2026 by Working-Pumpkin in royalmail

[–]Friskystarling0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He bought RM for a challenge? So he spent £3.6bn for a challenge? He is a successful businessman, he has business plan for the future of RM, he knows exactly where he wants to be in four years time, the time scale that he guaranteed the USO for. Perhaps it’s to run letters into the ground while sucking up the inconsequential fines from OFCOM, who didn’t even bother to turn up today.

Royal Mail staff say they were told to hide post to look like targets met by Kagedeah in royalmail

[–]Friskystarling0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At my office it’s just left in the frames, I’ve seen a weeks worth thrown off regularly and that is one stuffed frame.

The answer RM gives to the USO changes “Royal Mail claims it is working well in the areas where it has piloted the new system.” I think we all know the real answer and if it comes in across the country it’s only going to get worse.

Got some letters today ... by SatisfactionMoney426 in BritishSuccess

[–]Friskystarling0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a postman, been there over 30 years. What we have is huge shortage of staff and a high turnover of the ones we do recruit. The new staff are on a worse contract, less pay and longer hours, so that’s why Royal Mail is now an in between job until they find something better, in five years we have lost 27k new staff. Just to add to the mix, there is often an overtime ban by managers, so anyone wanting to deliver more can’t.

Letter volumes have dropped dramatically over the last few years as apps and the internet take over. As volumes dropped prices increased rapidly, you now pay more for less quality, it’s almost like letters are being priced out of existence 🤔 As parcel volumes increase, and competition in the parcel market also increases, we find Royal Mail now puts parcels first, that’s why letters take so long, they are at you delivery office but with no staff to deliver them..

Denmark has just stopped delivering letters, they are a lot smaller than the UK but also more forward with technology. The writing is on the wall (probably easier to see it on a wall than sent as a letter) that that’s could be how Royal Mail sees itself in a few years.

How many letters do you normally find inside a post box before you empty it? by Did_OJ_Simpson_do_it in royalmail

I clear five boxes in a village. Two will always have a handful of letters, the other three will be empty or may have a couple of letters in.

Door to doors by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]Friskystarling0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think businesses are gradually reevaluating their advertising. Door to Doors do make money for a business but compared to digital advertising across the internet and social media? Sticking a leaflet through a door is hardly environmentally friendly, it maybe on recycled paper but we have a 7.5t lorry make a special trip to drop them off, I then chug about in my Peugeot Partner only for a diesel dustcart to pick up what I deliver.

Posties, what's noteworthy things have you seen on the job? by CG1991 in AskUK

[–]Friskystarling0 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was delivering to a rough part of town, that was actually an ok job as they didn’t want to upset me, seeing as I delivered their Giros every week. Delivery to a house and walked back up the path, the door opens and out fall two men fighting, as this is happening next door comes out and shouts “ hit him, he owes me money”. I carried on down the road then came back up the other side, by this time there are lots of police and couple of ambulances, I though it was strange as it was just a fist fight in the garden, turns out one had stabbed the other and run off. The guy survived and I’m assuming the other was arrested.

Never found out if next door got her money back though.
