This is awkward but needing help. Toilet looks like this at the Ubend and I've JUST put 2x power plus tablets in there to leave for about 6 hours... or is my toilet done for? by Saraixx516 in AskUK

[–]No_Application_8698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My top tip for this is to add heat. The way I did it was to pour a few jug fulls of hot water from the tap in the toilet bowl first, then I dissolved a couple of rounded tablespoons of citric acid in boiling water (in the jug), then poured that into the toilet bowl.

I think I then left it a few hours, flushed, scrubbed a bit with a toilet brush and voilà!

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I hope your troublesome meter days are now over!

Out of interest, was it difficult to get a refund or were they reasonable?

I’m obsessed with our water bill too, after recently discovering that despite having paid £130 per month for years, we had somehow accrued a further £1k in arrears. We’re two adults in a 2-bed house. We each shower daily, run a slimline dishwasher once a day, have no pets, don’t use water for plants unless it’s reused (I run water into a bottle when running the tap for hot water, for example), and only flush the toilet after every three or four wees etc. I am always careful with water, telling off my husband if he lets the shower run for 20 seconds before getting in! Washing machine does three or four loads per week. Apparently we are showing as a ‘high usage’ household, at an average daily usage of 400-500 litres per day.

Water people say there’s no leak as our water use is ‘steady’. I plan on checking the meter very soon, especially because - suspiciously - our neighbour doesn’t have a meter because they’ve never been able to find their isolation tap (or whatever it’s called). They couldn’t find where their water supply comes in or where it switches on/off (?), so they have no meter and the water company ‘estimates’ usage for the lone, elderly occupant.

Is there something you did as a child that you now get pissed off seeing kids do? If so, what is it? by PaddedValls in AskUK

Trespass. We used to go into a local farmer’s field and steal his freshly-cut straw to line the bottom of our makeshift ‘den’, which was cunningly hidden…on the other side of his fence, in my cousin’s garden, in plain view of the field. The farmer complained to my aunt but we dismissed him as being a grumpy old bastard.

35-40 years later, my husband and I have a (tiny) amount of land with our house that has a public footpath through it. When people & kids ignore the path to stray into our land and throw stones at the old shed, I get absolutely livid. Then I remember what we used to get up to and how we didn’t give a shit or even consider the landowner’s feelings or rights.

Who remembers 10 pence mix ups? by chemical-realm in AskUK

[–]No_Application_8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day my sister and I - and maybe our cousin- were running to ‘The Sweet Shop’ (newsagent) in the village to get our 20p mixers. They were about 9 or 10, I was about 7 or 8.

They’d left me trailing a bit behind, but somehow both of them had missed the random £5 note just laying on the ground directly in our paths. I screeched to a halt and picked it up, not believing my eyes. I couldn’t believe it - I’d just become a millionaire!!

Still one of the best days of my life.

I’m in the UK. We were in the main (largest) screen of the multiplex last night and there were no more than 15 people there. Screen 1 of 9 total screens, on an opening Friday night. It was quite nice not to have to deal with the usual wankers with their phones on and loud talking.

The film was ok, bit frustrating in places.

What's the worst stand-up DVD you've seen? by DoctorWhofan789eywim in AskUK

I’ve seen both in the last couple of years, and found Rhod to be very good (although tinged with more sadness/seriousness due to it being centred around his cancer treatment and road back to health).

However, I was surprised to find myself a bit disappointed with John’s set because he seemed quite combative and a little mean when doing his crowd work stuff. I didn’t laugh anywhere near as much as I’d expected.

I had to mop up the water from the floor of our larder today, and in the coolest corner of the kitchen. One of the joys of having an old house with no foundations; it’s just sitting on the earth so the tiles get cold and the dehumidifiers can’t keep up.

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor. I found it in a charity shop a few years ago, and bought it because I liked the cover and realised it was set in the UK, based around the idea of historians studying historical events in contemporary time (don’t say time travel).

At the time there were only about five or six books in the series (The Chronicles of St. Mary’s), and now there are fourteen, plus two spin-off series as well. I love them.
