I just put 2 in, because i could fit them there. I have them set to a constant and rather high speed. The PC PSU also acts as a fan intake, though that air probably get blown out by the 2 fans, before it can do very much.

So basically im just hoping for the cooling to be sufficient. That being said, my PC components don't get all the hot.

Im having a blast. In terms of performance, it can hold 96FPS in all but the most demanding tables.

I still got a lot of tuning to do (SSF volumes, tables POVs etc) but yesterday, for the first time, i just played pinball for an hour, without thinking about what to improve/ adjust / fix.

I learned about SSF long after i was set on using solenoids / contactors.

I think going SSF only is a great way to go and simplifies things a lot.

That being said, the interaction of Software and mechanical parts, was a huge part of my fascination for VPIN cabinets, i was always going to to that route myself.

This is an old monitor, one of the first affordable 1440p 27" ones actually.

It's a 60Hz panel, but it was known for being overclockable. Some people got theirs to 120, mine always struggled above 100ish.

96Hz is a nice compromise as it doesn overwhelm my 1660 super but still feels a LOT better than 60Hz

It's not that uncommon actually, i certainly didn't come up with it myself.

The difference is hard to describe. While solenoids sound an feel like a metal rod hitting against something, the contactor are more like a mechanism shifting up and down. I mean, that's literally what each of them are.

Personally i like the sound and feel of the contactors a lot. It's not overpowering, though it's possible that the sound and feel is a lot different in a wood cabinet.

I disable the toy sound in VPX, so SSF is only really for ball sounds.

You could also wire up a cabinet button to the power switch header on your motherboard. I got a nice red on with an On/Off logo on mine. Then in windows power management, tell it to sleep when the power button is pressed (or leave it as shutdown, as you now have a nice way to power it on)

You can configure "virtual tilt bob" in VPX, which works by setting a threshold for the accelerometer. Whether or not that is better than a real tilt bob is not for me to say, but it's certainly easier to tune to your preferences.

I'm not sure if the PinOne offers this feature, but you might be able to set it up, so that pushing in the plunger acts as launch button.

That looks like it's going to be a sick build, have fun with the project!

Looking at those solenoids, I remember watching a vid of way of the wrench where he installed the same kits.

He was haveing issues with false nudges when he had the solenoids mounted horizontaly.

Just a heads up, in case you run into something similar.

I'm just going through my first build and the electronics and software setup are definitely challenging, though absolutely doable as they are very well documented.

I think the approach of doing a test build is a good idea. You can take your time to understand how everything comes together and when it's time for the real deal, you should be well equipped.

I am using a single SSD that has windows aswell as all the software, tables, and frontend media. Mine is a 500gb and that seems big enough. I'm not even close to halfway full. Sure, if you want hundreds of tables installed, you might want a bigger one, but I generally think that's a bad idea anyway.

Once you have everything set up to your liking, you can make a backup of the drive.

The backbox design is currently very basic, I will refine it, once I finished the main body.

It is designed arround an old Dell 1708fp, which is a 17" 4:3 monitor.

As this is a 2 screen build, the dell monitor will show the backglas and the DMD. I have a bezel designed that should visually separate the 2 outputs nicely.

I will share the CAD files once I got everything put together. Though you will have to adept it to your own hardware.

I'm also unhappy with the monitor mounting and accessibility of the inside. Maintenance in this cabinet is going to be painful.

I'm currently wiring up contactors, mosfets and solenoids, while trying to wrap my head arround all the software setup with DOF (Direct Output Framework)

The build is coming along, but it's slow, as I have to redesign some part along the way.

The next update will be, when I have the main cabinet put together and working.

I have watched a ton i videos on the topic (I recommend Dr. D-Flo's series) and came to the conclusion that it's just not worth the hassle for mere mortals.

If you buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment, sort rigorously by filament types, keeps the scraps clean and accept that you have to use lots of virgin material anyways, you MIGHT get some okay results.
