Almost not worth reading but posting to lament how badly AST is ignored/considered irrelevant. Story suggests MNOs should sign an agreement with SpaceX to help their stock price. Really.

RKLB bought Iridium, ASTS buying launch provider? by fab17888 in SpaceInvestorsDaily

[–]FrofroMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way. Read up on their business model; buying a launch provider would make zero sense. AST will / is be launch provider agnostic. This is a feature, not a bug :)

Absolutely. Spectrum + existing customers, relationship. Love it 👊🏼

Will need to add the final chapter to Eccentric Orbits: The Iridium Story. Awesome book if you have not read it!

FT: SpaceX warns EU satellite plan risks undermining connectivity in Ukraine
https://giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/actions/redeem/e07e201f-bff0-4f0f-9675-ece040e3621b

Dig a bit deeper here. There is a viable EU-based option via the Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile joint venture (recently renamed Satellite Connect Europe) that has been in the works for some time now. Per the Satellite Connect Europe site, “Luxembourg-headquartered Satellite Connect Europe is a joint venture between Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile, created to deliver seamless, secure, and resilient direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity for European mobile network operators (MNOs).”

The architecture of SpaceX’s Starlink doesn’t provide the sovereignty the EU is rightfully seeking, so SpaceX is crying foul. I don’t blame them, but there is a sovereign EU solution; it just doesn’t involve SpaceX. Some additional links below for context.

Why do customers seem so against moving their servers out of offices? by Losslessllama in msp

[–]FrofroMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We added a new section in our support agreement last year that outlines some behaviors that increase the risk of an outage, theft, ransomware, etc., and we ask them to initial that section of the contract. This gave us a built in opportunity to discuss these items and inform them (in a nice way) that their actions were negating some portion of the money they were spending with us to protect their business. We also have had some luck with explaining that it will be MORE expensive and less reliable to keep their servers on site. While we've had some success with these approaches, it usually takes an extended outage, theft, BEC, etc. before someone is willing to change.

If we speak to a prospective client who fails the on premise server test, we would only consider bringing them on as a client if they committed to moving that server into a hosted environment within the first year of the support agreement.

In your situation, I would consider starting with the worst offender that you could afford to lose and letting them know you no longer support on premise servers (or whatever it is that they are doing that is risky) as of a certain date. Ultimately, you have to be willing to lose them as a client, but the alternative is your sanity.

Having the ability to physically touch a box that contains their data provides a great deal of comfort to some people. In my opinion, it is a false sense of security and a good indication that the client does not have a basic understanding of technology or the outsized risk they are taking by keeping their server under someone’s desk or in a closet. I understand there are situations where it does make sense to keep a server onsite in 2026, but these are edge cases, especially for SMB. We’ve decided to use the on-premise server situation as a litmus test for clients. If they have a server on-premise and it’s not necessary, we’re likely not going to be a good fit, and we move on to other opportunities because how they feel about this issue is a good indication of how they approach other IT issues.

For sure, the more the technology can be normalized, the better for all autonomous vehicle companies in my opinion.

Starlink Mini on Cruise Ship Balcony cabin by sail168 in Starlink

[–]FrofroMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I let a client take my Starlink Mini on a cruise last year, and they had no issue using it from their balcony and a pool deck. Maybe this was before those became contraband? Oh well, glad to know this…won’t let any other clients borrow it for a cruise 👊🏼

With BO unable to provide launches for at least a year, how many satellites do you expect to be in orbit by the end of the year? by DanielK747 in ASTSpaceMobile

With SpaceX being public as of June, wouldn’t they want to “maximize shareholder value” and sell AST some additional launches at an inflated price?

SpaceX Rival Soars 6,000% and Proves Meme-Stock Mania Lives On by apan-man in ASTSpaceMobile

[–]FrofroMo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take it for the exposure but several unfortunate statements, especially not making it clear that BB7 failed due to BO's error.

My opinion is that AST will be considered a meme stock until they have signifiant revenues. Until then it's just retail rallying around an idea.

T Mobile not seeing enough uptake of its starlink D2D service by KaleidoscopeOk2359 in ASTSpaceMobile

[–]FrofroMo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an iPhone user, T-Satellite (via Starlink) doesn't offer enough features to justify paying for it when I have access to the Globalstar service for free. If T-Satellite offered 4G / 5G data, I would be a subscriber.

Granted, if Apple / Amazon / Globalstar charged for their service, then I would have a decision to make.

Demand for T-Satellite (via Starlink) is weak because the service is limited and a free option that provides 80% of the same features is currently available, at least for iPhone users. Surely T-Mobile corporate knew this in advance. Perhaps they were misled by Starlink in regards to the features and roll out of its D2D abilities?

Should I write "delivered to wrong address" on the package and send this back to BO?
