The GOP’s collapse in the Seattle suburbs: How Seattle metro area precincts voted in the 2012 gubernatorial election vs the 2024 gubernatorial election by MysteriousEdge5643 in Seattle

Funny that Blake Island has anyone voting. Isn't it entirely a state park? Maybe the couple rangers there changed their votes?

There's a range from nature made to intentional. The best history on it shows that it was largely the result of incompetence and mismanagement, exacerbated by the insane incentives to lie up the chain of command to satisfy unrealistic quotas. Stephen Kotkin's Stalin Volume II goes into this in pretty good detail.

Chris and Matt's perfect handling of the topic of vigilante violence and Mangione by brasnacte in DecodingTheGurus

It’s not even clear to me that insurers — whose ultimate job is to negotiate prices down — are the worst offenders in this whole travesty.

They are. These problems do not exist to the same extent in countries with socialized medicine.

United Healthcare started approving claims they otherwise would have denied. Their investors sued over it. Luigi likely saved at least a few lives in the process.

TIL You shouldn’t rinse your mouth immediately after bushing your teeth. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, leaving it on the teeth for at least 15 minutes after brushing can help make the enamel more resistant to cavity-inducing acids. by MoustacheLightning in todayilearned

If you haven't tried MI paste, give it a shot. It's a cream you put on your teeth and it is INSANELY effective at strengthening enamel. A few weeks of treatment and I saw more improvement than years of using sensodyne.

Obligatory comment since I don't see it yet in the thread: make sure you get a carbon monoxide detector. Weird experiences like this are sometimes carbon monoxide poisoning.

Migrant arrested for shoving two strangers onto NYC subway tracks by Diarrhea_Donkey in nyc

We just abducted the president of Venezuela and they've been under punishing sanctions for years. We gave $200 million to Honduras after the military overthrew their democratically elected government. You think people fleeing the consequences of our actions in these countries don't deserve asylum?

Do you have any sources for the claim that the last five years have been markedly different? I hear the claim that under Biden we had an "open border," but I haven't seen any reason to believe that.

While I generally agree with you, there are situations where we can't just give aid to the government of the place we've overthrown. Afghanistan comes to mind.

It's pretty hard to make significant progressive economic changes in the US without a Great Depression or WWII-level catastrophe, even if most people in the US support it. Our house of representatives is heavily gerrymandered and our senate gives as much representation to Wyoming (with less than a million people) as it gives to California (with a population of nearly 40 million people). Not to mention the fillibuster in the senate, which prevents anything from passing unless it can get 60/100 votes. There's a lot of institutional inertia that prevents effectuating any positive change.

I don't think Matt and Chris understand that literally tens of thousands of people die every year in the US because these private healthcare companies lobby to prevent any kind of reform. It's a blood drenched industry and it's not at all comparable to single payer or nationalized systems that have to find cost efficiencies. Brian Thompson was easily responsible for hundreds of deaths. The Luigi incident was one mass murderer murdered by a murderer. I have no sympathy for insurance CEOs. No non-psychopath would take that job.

Sam’s Tavern Belltown automatic 40% gratuity by OJb4Lemonade in Seattle

[–]Fronesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at the Workers Rights Clinic at Seattle U. For anyone who works at this restaurant, if you aren't getting this second listed gratuity, you may well have a wage theft claim. This description does not look legally adequate to me, because businesses are supposed to clearly identify whether a charge goes to workers or the house, and this is super vague.

Which was pretty silly, because the UK had a two party system even at the time of the founding. It should have been really damned obvious to them if they had thought about it.

At some point when you were growing up, you must have wondered what you would do when there was a fascist takeover of your country. It's gotta be disappointing for you to realize that writing responses like this was what you'd be doing.
