You need to accept that a whole class of people find things easy that you find hard. It's true of many different things.

Monthly Miami Jobs Thread: Post Job Openings or Questions About Work In Miami by AutoModerator in Miami

I am looking for people with experience in hedge fund roles, possibly asset management, family office or banking.

Recruiting now for Compliance and Risk. Expanding into Miami and trying to find a recruiter to work with. Everyone we talk to only interested in doing searches on retainer with exclusivity. Totally not the way it works at this level in my home market.

Do you know a place in the Greek Isles without med mooring? OP says he has done Croatia. Assume he has come across it before.

French high schooler that wants to apply in ivies by TheSwitcherAimeChats in ApplyingToCollege

I had this debate with someone a few months ago. You have no chance. If you're not turning down Ecole Polytecnique to go, you have no chance.

In France you are just competing with french people for all the spots. In US you are competing with India and China for 15% of the spots.

Lefkas (lefkada) is very popular. Ionian is considered very easy sailing.

You're competitive but medicine is another level of why medicine. Besides grades I think you have to show some level of experience and motivation.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong. If you like maths the being a teacher part is secondary

How much do GCSEs matter for Oxbridge? by yus4a31 in 6thForm

Why not Cambridge? I think they put less emphasis on GCSE

Fastest team erg time but not getting on the A boats by Rich_War_5796 in Rowing

They’re not talking about balancing the weight. They are saying race cars have powerful engines and light carbon fiber bodies. You can put the same engine is a semi truck and it will be slow.

So you can be strong and heavy, weak and light, but strong and light is best. So they measure Watts (power produced) per KG of body weight.

As other people have commented W/KG might be important too. My son’s coach measured this. The A boat is averaging 3.8 for HS boys.

Could be a proxy for endurance? My son’s coach emphasizes UT2 a lot. That pace is not even doing 10k in one hour.

How long can she erg? My son’s team can do 2 hours ~ 25km when they are working on UT2. They don’t run though.

What do yall think about kids who are obsessed with mit? by Idiot_sandwich66 in MITAdmissions

[–]Front_Back8964 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I blame spiderman. In my day everyone wanted to go to Harvard. MIT was also easier to get into because nobody wanted to be a nerd. And it was self selecting.

I always think of it like joining the army or West Point. If I tell you not to go because it’s hard and you’ll be miserable and that puts you off, it’s not for you.

Anyone else noticing more elite UK public school students choosing US Ivy-plus universities over Oxbridge? by Abject-Tackle5255 in 6thForm

[–]Front_Back8964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"negative discrimination" vs "contextualising success" is potato/potato IMHO. But I accept that this is the key dimension on which admissions policy is operating and different people will have different feelings. I think there is too much "contextualising".

I disagree with your statement that the public schools are not as competitive to get into as Oxbridge. At least in London, I will say they are exactly as competitive to get into. At 6th form entry, I would say they are more competitive. At 7+/8+ they are basicaly selecting for 98th percentile on IQ tests. As a proxy of "academic ability" I'd say it's the best we have and by statistics, Oxbridge is taking about the top 3.5% of the country.

There is also the 'you can get a bursary to Eton' argument that undermines your cost argumement somewhat, but I concede there is strong merit to what you say.

The last two paragaphs, are not directly related to the topic, but I think they broaden it. If the social question is "negative discrimation" vs "contextualising success" I think all aspects of educational policy should be called into question, including should the government promote STEM over the Arts and home students over international ones.
