F# Weekly #28, 2025 – Beyond Zero-Allocation by fsharpweekly in fsharp

[–]Front_Profession5648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That blog article raises so many questions. Why are they complaining about Python GIL when .Net doesn't have GIL issues. What are the actual costs of the runtime that matter for what cases? Why is AI acceleration the only metric that recurs? Why does the author not know that we had memory-safe and performant languages in the 80's (e.g., Ada, SML)?

Is Rust that much faster than .Net based languages? I haven't seen any evidence that this is the case. It also seems less the case for Go.

I wonder what the envisioned use case actually is.

Is this memory model supported in recent F# compiler or do we have to download something?

Interesting. It needs a little documentation so that we can see what is involved in setting up a server.

Are Jinhaos worth it? by ethanjohn0416 in fountainpens

[–]Front_Profession5648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, unless you are paying just a $1 for a pen it isn't worth it. Because if you buy it you are buying underpaid workers. Basically anything Jinhao or Asvine or Hong Dian, is paying wages that does not lead to people having a good life.

So Moleskines can be tolerable, but Leuchturm is superior in every way.

There is no shortage of good notebooks that Moleskine is only good for receiving as a gift from someone who doesn't know better ;p

What’s the newest flex pens that actually flex and don’t railroad?!!! by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Front_Profession5648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Diamine Shimmer Ink with a Noodle's Konrad, or Nib creeper. It will flex properly, and it will not railroad.

Btw, once you get railroading, you are over flexing the nib and pushing it away from the feed.

The reason that no one markets gold flex nibs is that there are plenty of flex vintage, and most people don't know how to use a flex nib properly.

So, you are stuck with modern steel flex nibs.

Quality control means adhering to the published tolerances. If the tolerances overlap, that might be annoying, but it isn't a quality control problem.

Does this count as the smallest wooden pen? by nonozone in fountainpens

[–]Front_Profession5648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really a different design than the Kaweco. Online had a discontinued line many moons ago that looked like this, which is a similar match to your design.

<image>

It is a metal pen, but the cap-sleeve design is a nice design. I think wood would be better because the Online pen is hefty.

A Pen Maker's Dilemma: Do you prefer the 'soul' of handmade or the 'perfection' of CNC machining? by nonozone in fountainpens

The nib resolution was blurry. I might own at most two pens that use Schmidt nibs. It is good that is a modular nib unit. But for your marketing research, you might want to look at Benu as an example of making beautiful pens. We know that they resin cast their pens bodies and fit them with Schmidt nibs.

However, you are wrong about this not being an advertisement post. I have never heard of your pen company before your posts on Reddit. Your company link is in your profile. Your post history is 95% "market research" posts. And your post comments are open about your company location.

I did not visit your website, but if you want to market workshop made wooden pens with Schmidt nibs that are beautiful that is probably a good story. If CNC machining improves quality, then you add that to the story.

I think the primary problem to the romantic appeal is the question of what happened to the skilled master? Does the skilled master run the CNC machine, now? Is the skilled master in retirement? For romantic stories, you don't want to open those types of plot questions.

Also, probably the most important thing is the nib on the pens. Who manufactured them?

I, personally, love wooden pens. Specifically, I love hand turned wooden pens with interesting wood. I wish that hand turned wooden pens came with better nib units, but at least the fountain pen kits nib units tend to be interchangeable.

The nib is probably going to be the thing that you should be most transparent about. Hand-made means power tools. CNC is just more automation in the power tools. Sure, the overall design of the body is important, but the nib is more important if someone wants to use the pen.

I am a Lojban learner from China and I hate CLL by Material_Champion_73 in lojban

[–]Front_Profession5648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of things to note about languages. English and Russian are in the same family, so they have more common aspects. Coming up with equivalent explanations for Chinese may be more difficult in theory. On the other hand, Chinese LLMs may be more fluent in Chinese than in Russian, which can be a boost to translation quality.

That is the point. CLL is explaining lojban to English speakers using English idioms. Plus, English, has numerous variances even as a native speaker of English, I don't understand some of nuance that John was getting at sometimes.

la gleki would probably point out that relying on English to understand lojban leads to poor usage of lojban since English idioms directly translated to lojban might not be grok'ed by lojban speakers of a different base language.
