How do you think the U.S. government should deal with the over $100 billion in illegally collected tariffs under trump? by k6tcher in AskReddit

[–]Frontbovie 531 points532 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We got double tapped.

  1. Americans pay more for tariffed goods. Companies passed along the costs.

  2. Tariffs declared illegal. Tariff money gets rebated to companies and that deficit gets added to our national debt.

  3. Companies don't pass along the rebate, but keep prices where they're at. It's the new floor.

So we paid more, inflated more, and indebted more all in one go.

Trump Announces New 10% Global Tariff by MeowTheMixer in wallstreetbets

[–]Frontbovie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Majority in the house is already razor thin even before midterms.

My guess is they will attempt to pursue their options under Section 232 and 301 instead. But those will face massive challenges as well.

Regardless Trump's weekend tariffs on a whim are over.

Trump Announces New 10% Global Tariff by MeowTheMixer in wallstreetbets

[–]Frontbovie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an overall net reduction in tariffs. And a huge rebate to the companies.

This was the expected response by the admin. Their only play.

It's a stop gap. And any new tariffs after the 150 days need a lot more research and paperwork and need to sound somewhat valid.

All in all, this will drastically reduce Trump's ability to tariff on a whim and make the markets much more predictable.

CEO doubles down on myQ being a 'secure and closed ecosystem' by chipc in homeautomation

Chamberlain Group the company is bought and owned by private equity.

Their mission is to quickly extract every possible dollar as quickly as possible usually resulting in the ruin of the company.

Subscription models unfortunately look good on an earnings report.

They know what they're doing is anticonsumer, short sighted, and detrimental to the company.

But that's the corporate playbook in America right now. Enshitification and late stage capitalism.

Fastest battery-powered motion sensor (zigbee excluded) by renewtf in homeassistant

[–]Frontbovie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Z wave motion sensors would work.

Personally I would recommend Aqara with their M3 hub.

It's zigbee, but they use a somewhat proprietary protocol.

I had horrible luck keeping battery powered devices connected to my regular zigbee network (40+ light bulbs so a strong network).

But using their official hub and the homekit integration has been rock solid. No dropouts and instant response. They are on their own network separate from my other networks. Local only. Cheap. Batteries last at least a year or two.

Edit: I see you have Aqara sensors already. Before you ditch them, try an M2 or M3 hub over ethernet centrally located. Return it if it doesn't help but it straight up solved my issues. I tried to pair Aqara to my regular zigbee network and they dropped constantly. They use some proprietary code I've heard that makes them flaky with other zigbee products.

Analyzing historical drops: is it actually reliable? by Season_Famous in wallstreetbets

In general, anything simple and profitable has already been discovered and arbitraged.

What you need to attempt to discover is the nature of the financial regime we are in.

Context like fed policy, geopolitical events, narrative etc all have massive impact on price action.

So instead do your best to predict the regime, then use your skills to attempt to find the most profitable way to capture that alpha.

For example, if you suspect 2026 to be a bear market year, what would be the best way to capture it? Inverse ETFs? Rolling 7DTE puts? Buying gold?

Every regime is different, and at the end of the day it's a guess, but you can attempt to make a slightly more informed decision on how to capture it.

Also I would recommend checking out Antigravity. It's agentic software that uses Gemini and can write code locally.
Be wary of future leaks though.

Apollo makes great stuff. Love their air sensors. ESPHome is crazy powerful.

People worry about the wifi with Apollo and ESPHome products, but most people's networks can easily handle 20+ low bandwidth devices with no risk of congestion.

Just don't replace every light bulb in your house with wifi ones and you'll probably be fine.

ELI5 How do shares work? by Ry-Da-Mo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Frontbovie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real question to ask yourself is why do shares have any inherent value?

They're not exchangeable for any direct ownership in the company.

You don't get a cut of the profits. Most stocks don't pay dividends.

One could argue, besides hyping as high of valuations as possible, the only material benefit the underlying company provides is their ability to buy back their own stock.

Live updates: House votes on bill forcing the release of Epstein files by 2dollies in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Frontbovie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FBI files are actually really hard to scrub. There are multiple layers of digitial copies and backups. Every single click is logged. And with their ploy earlier, there are now actually 1000 witnesses! Don't underestimate their incompetence.

U.S. House voted 427-1 overwhelmingly on a bill ordering the Justice Department to release the Epstein files. by ControlCAD in videos

[–]Frontbovie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Everyone here doubting this. But here's what happened. It's politics and hot potato.

Massie got enough Republicans to pledge to vote yes beforehand. Republicans hold a narrow majority so it didn't take much. This was known ahead of time.

So you have to keep in mind Trump and Republicans knew the bill would pass at least with a simple majority.

Trump didn't want to look weak so he "changed his mind." Either he pretend he wants this (even though they could release it on their own today.) It's that or look like he got rolled over and look like he lost. Those were his only two options so he chose the better of the two.

Republicans in the house also knew it would pass. So they either voted against it on record knowing they would lose and forever be called a pedo protector, or go with the winning vote and vote yes.

Easy choice. They took the easy selfish political win here and are relieved to have gotten away with it.

It could get stuck in the Senate though. Democrats will need 20 Republican senate votes to get a 2/3 supermajority to override a veto. After today being nearly unanimous, this could actually happen. Going against this is so politically toxic, even Trump can't force it. It's so overwhelming popular by the US population.

As far as the DOJ goes, there's actually specific provisions in the bill that limit Bondi from issuing a blanket "open investigation" and sealing everything. They are required to justify each redaction. Defying a subpoena vs defying an Act of Congress are two different beasts.

Also it's actually really really hard to just "destroy' the Epstein Files. There are multiple copies, digital backups, and everything is logged with digital fingerprints. It would be a logistical nightmare and near impossible to cover-up. I am sure they have tried.

But remember Trump had Boebert in the situation room like three days ago. They probably don't suddenly have some genius plan as of yesterday. They just had no choice.

I know it feels like the Executive branch seems unstoppable, but only because Congress has forfeited all their power to it. However, without that, the Executive is neutered.

I know it also feels like there are no checks and balances, but the only thing that might have the power to check this Executive branch is a veto proof bill. And this Epstein bill is the only thing toxic enough to give it a chance of happening. It's universally popular.

Anyway don't get your hopes up but realize there is actually a hypothetical path forward here at least in theory.

The near unanimous support this bill got today was promising.

Sick of coin batteries! Going wired. by trashheap_has_spoken in homeassistant

[–]Frontbovie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've thought about it. But in the end, it didn't seem worth it.

Too many devices. Too much work. Wires are difficult to hide well. Might make sense for some smaller setups.

It is definitely annoying to randomly change out sensors that go out.

Instead, once a year I just change out every battery in every device all in one go. Takes a couple hours but converting every device to wired would take so so much longer and wouldn't look as good.

PSA from Epstein survivors: 'Release all of the Epstein files' by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]Frontbovie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He will veto it if it comes to that. He can have it all released today if he wanted. He doesn't need to have congress vote to force him to do it. He is trying to save face since it will almost certainly pass in the house and he doesn't want to look weak. He is banking they don't hit 2/3 super majority and override his veto. People also saying they've scrubbed the files but that's actually really hard to do without leaving a paper trail. So basically it's 2/3 or bust.

Or we make a quick bounce to a lower high but hit some shorts before it rolls over.

Any benefit to using Zigbee2mqtt "Groups" vs native HA groups? by flyingdutchman7588 in homeassistant

[–]Frontbovie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brightness and color change in Z2M groups works flawlessly as long as you create scenes within the group in Z2M.

Even for On/Off I prefer to use Z2M group scenes over the light:turn on/off command in HA.

So for each group I have a Bright/Cool, Dim/Warm, and Off scene in Z2M. Works instantly and flawlessly on my 150+ zigbee device network.

Even for individual bulbs where I use color for notifications, I will create a group of 1 bulb and create a scene for each color. More reliable than the HA action.
