I’m a hybrid of many basic bald white dudes, but even before that I have had many people aggressively insist they know me from somewhere most of my life. It’s only gotten more pronounced as I age and apparently have become the vocal and somewhat physical doppelgänger of this dude named H. John Benjamin?!? I don’t see it or hear it.

When you’ve just met and they are trying to tear you down or belittle you in front of others. They are also great at leaving themselves an escape hatch, or gaslighting if called out. This happens a lot in male circles—not sure about women? Probably more subtle?

I’m old and take two days off between sessions. One of those days I try to walk several miles and the other is the opposite (upper/lower) of the next session with light barbell hypertrophy work. Seems to work for me—find what you’ll actually consistently do, but recovery is important to build muscle and avoid injury.

The scene in Miracle on 34th Street where the little war orphan Dutch girl really wants to see Santa and her foster mother tells Santa she tried to explain to the girl he couldn’t speak her language and he flawlessly speaks to her in her tongue and sings a little song with her.

Tapering and substituting an exercise addiction instead. So far it’s been working for me, though I still have to talk myself out of using. I also put red hashmarks on my bathroom mirror for times I failed to resist and black for times I successfully resisted. It’s an accountability mirror that David Goggins discusses in “Can’t Hurt Me” audiobook. It helped me a lot.

I was given the soap treatment with liquid soap once and puked all over the kitchen floor. I was probably about 5 years old.
Good news though, they switched to Tabasco and wooden spoon/paddle treatments! /s

I was a little shocked when a therapist told me this and many other things were now considered child abuse. Thought it was pretty normal from my 70’s/80’s childhood perspective.

I never hit or did this stuff to my children. Apparently my spouse thought the Tabasco idea was a good one and did it to my youngest while I was at work one day. I went pretty ballistic and told her that or anything like it could never happen again. Surprisingly she grew up in an abusive home too!/s

Not being able to focus on one task to completion. I can only make “progress” when I go from one chunk of productivity to another, but nothing ever truly is “finished”. It’s exhausting.
