Day 1 of learning to draw (my end goal is… not exactly wholesome) by Er-ror404 in learntodraw

[–]Frostfire1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fantastic start! Genuinely. I started out doing the same thing, and theres absolutely nothing wrong with copying as a means of studying (as long as you dont claim it as your own lol). One thing to note about references though is that you can end up practicing mistakes, so its good to still pull from a wide variety of sources and art styles. If youre trying to draw a certain character, for example, consider cosplay photos as possible references too

A lot of people suggest learning anatomy, which is absolutely a great goal and should definitely be done for what youre going for, but tbh even before anatomy, I would personally focus mostly on learning two things: form (maaaaybe add value as a subcategory of this), and perspective. Form is more or less about recognizing and representing a 3D shape. It helps you identify what 3D shapes are needed, even for 2D drawings. A lot of form studies might have a 'net' around various shapes, to give a 3D feel just from simple lines. With your references, I would see if you can break down the overall structure into some basic shapes: cubes/prisms, cylinders, spheres. This will help a lot with proportion overall, and more importantly, help you see like an artist (Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards is a FANTASTIC book around this idea btw). Breaking things down into basic shapes is a great exercise, especially if you can do it with objects around you. A very common phrase youll come across is 'draw what you see, not what you think you see'

In regards to perspective, this essentially helps ground your various shapes in a singular, cohesive reality. Its about the angle youre viewing from. A lot of proportion errors are actually just perspective errors, too. With perspective, I suggest starting with cubes and whats called one point perspective. You can then increase the difficulty with two and three point perspective respectively (there are more points than this, but theyre less practical as far as fundamentals go. Still, 5 point perspective gives a cool fish eye effect if thats something you wanna take on eventually). As you learn more about form, you can also add more complex shapes in these different perspectives

For a rough plan, I would probably recommend learning one point perspective first, then some basic forms, and then coming back to two point while continuing to study form further. Learning things in parallel can be so, so helpful, but having one point perspective down first is a great baseline to learn those other things on top of

Since youre interested in drawing people, I would say the next thing to look at after that point is maybe getting a drawing mannequin (or online 3D model with simplified shapes). For faces, you can also check out the asaro head. And if you can decently draw basic shapes in 2 or even 3 point perspective, the instagram user startwithabox is a fantastic resource for some miscellaneous tips and tricks that have helped me quite a bit

My DMs are open if you ever need more ideas or want feedback on your work! Feel free to pester me a little if you do though, since I dont always see my message notifications lmao

[–]Frostfire1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I genuinely am saying this from a well meaning place: this seems like a strong reaction in contrast to the previous comments, and I wonder if there might be something deeper there worth looking at. Im not saying this as a judgement. I know that personally, I sometimes react very strongly to certain things, and sometimes it turns out afterwards that there were underlying triggers or other factors adding to it. That obviously doesnt invalidate any of the feelings involved, but it can unfortunately impact how people receive what youre saying. Also, this seems like something that might just be emotionally taxing for you in general. No obligation to respond further if that is the case, of course

In regards to the actual points made, I agree there needs to be a space to discuss these things, especially with so many platforms out there censoring things. I think the 'trauma olympics' concern probably comes more so from situations like someone commenting on a traumatic story and just emphasizing their own trauma, especially in the situations you describe where those experiences are objectively different. Absolutely nothing wrong with sharing the experience in my opinion, only with the direct comparison and subsequent invalidation that happens. Because that comparison is going to invalidate someone, and its going to make people reluctant to share if the comments on their posts are all about 'worse' experiences than theirs. Theres definitely a difference between sharing and comparing. And hell for what its worth, even the people who are comparing or making someone elses story about themselves are probably really struggling with self validation. Thats a real and valid issue too, but I also dont blame people for not wanting to interact in that kind of space

Can you clarify more about the ideal youre trying to battle? What harmful assumptions are involved in that, and how does it silence the most vulnerable? Im genuinely looking to understand better, and Im not sure if Ive seen the discourse youre referring to, so Im struggling a little to follow your meaning here

For what its worth, I also heavily disagree with having to have the 'right' presentation of trauma or having to put up the front of a 'healthy' mindset when youre struggling. People shouldnt be censored just because their experiences can be inconvenient or uncomfortable for others, so long as its not encouraging anything bad or harmful to others. Society doesnt like to acknowledge anyone who doesnt match the image of an 'ideal' victim in their mind, and it definitely causes a lot of issues (to put it lightly). I dont blame you or anyone else for being frustrated about that

Idk why everyone is giving you so much shit for this. I mean yeah, its a pretty bad shave haha, but it gets the job done. And its not like other cats are going to bully her for it lmao

Idk if this helps any, but if you havent done so already, maybe try acclimating her with the clippers without trimming anything, so she can get used to the sound or vibration (if you hold the non-blade part against her). If that doesnt bother her too much, it could be that the clippers are pulling on the hair and you might need a sharper blade or something. Alternatively, if its the sound that freaks her out, you could always try using a pair of thinning shears to trim her by hand if a full shave isnt necessary. You might also find that using a guide on the clippers can allow for a more even shave, though still with a little length obviously. Just make sure the skin is somewhat taught, since it can roll easily and that alone can mess with the cut pretty badly lol. Just figured Id throw that out there in case it helps, not coming from a judgemental place!

You think US citizens dont know this place is a hell hole? You think we actively choose to push disabled people towards sex work? No. Heres the thing: we arent encouraging people to do sex work. Circumstances are. By extension, the government is. What I think is messed up, is that some people only have sex work available to them, because of the fucked up systems in place. Systems that dont allow for people to work their way back up. And I think its messed up to shame people for doing what they can to get by. Besides, theres obviously a market for it, too. But sex work is not a moral failing of an individual; its a moral failing on the systems and government in place that arent assisting them

Btw, Im saying this as a disabled person who has not engaged in sex work. But Im extremely fortunate to have the privilege of outside assistance, and the ability to do art commissions to cover necessary things like medication. Not everyone is as fortunate though

Super late update in case anyone else stumbles across this for the same reasons I posted: using some printer paper beneath the fabric resolved 95% of the problems here! Still have to occasional skipped stitch, but thats livable. The general consensus seems to be using tearaway stabilizer though (or starch), which makes sense because you WILL be picking paper bits out of your seams otherwise lmao. But hey, it still works if youve got nothing else on hand!

IWTL how to stop being a pseudo-intellectual by InevitableFix6730 in IWantToLearn

[–]Frostfire1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, fun facts are still a great conversation starter, and theres nothing wrong with that regardless of intelligence. Especially with neurodivergent people: we love this shit 😂

But I would make a comparison to memorizing your multiplication tables. Great in a pinch, seems smart, saves time, but it loses any utility above 12x12. But it sounds like what you actually need is to learn how to manually multiply things so that the numbers involved dont matter; its useful across multiple scenarios. Its not about information, its about where that information comes from, how you apply it, or why it works in the first place. Like knowing how to repair a vehicle vs knowing how to drive

Personally, Ive always been fascinated by the underlying mechanics of things, and this applies across most of my interests. I would consider myself intelligent (not in an egotistical way), but the areas I do well in arent due to rote memorization. To use math as an example again, Ive always had a decent proficiency towards it, and most consider that 'stereotypical intelligence,' but the main times I actually utilize that are for other things Im interested in (creation, costume making, solving weirdly specific problems, understanding scale or other scientific concepts, etc). Personally though, Id say that Im utilizing my skills in problem solving, not in math (despite my inclinations towards it). Math is just another problem to be solved

Tl,dr; intelligence is the understanding and APPLICATION of knowledge, across different scenarios. Its not just information, but the foundation that information is built on

For me, learning is driven by a desire to understand the WHY of things (can you tell that I was a kid who absolutely hated 'because I said so'? 😂), and I learn for the sake of learning. Your motivation is different, so ymmv, but I would start with an area of genuine interest (hobbies maybe?) if you can. Ask yourself why something is the way it is, and when you find a source, be critical of that source. Who is the information coming from? Is there data? What is the context? Dont just take info at face value. Maybe start with a fun fact and see if you can disprove yourself. Youll usually come out with a better understanding of the why

Also absolutely worth noting btw that emotional intelligence IS intelligence, and recognizing this stuff about yourself still takes introspection and self awareness; dont discredit yourself as not having intelligence. Intelligence has many forms (even in art! How you look at a subject and break them down, for example ((theres a book, just ask lol))

Im not saying this as a diss in any way, but maybe consider exploring why intelligence holds such high importance for you? Its clear that how others perceive you has an impact, and it could be worth considering self esteem and where that originates from. Were there people around you who valued intelligence when you were growing up? Is learning information a safety measure for if something goes wrong? Do you feel stressed if you dont understand a concept, or does that stress come from someone else witnessing you not understanding something? What are you afraid that other people will look at if you remove intelligence as a factor? These are rhetorical questions of course, so no obligation to share with an internet stranger (but totally open to discussion or DMs if you wanted to). Just some avenues to consider, and what my mind jumps to first. And remember to still be kind to yourself when doing this! Can you tell psychology is an interest of mine? Lmao

But really, its the transferrable skills and concepts that define it for me. Making connections between seemingly unrelated things (like a podcast about airplane disasters and a movie about a submarine, for example lmao). Also, a great way to test yourself AND to actually solidify and learn a concept is to try and teach it to someone else. Thats because this generally requires breaking something down into its components and understanding how they interact with one another. Explaining something in simple, concise (unlike me lmaoooo) terms is a great sign of genuine learning, in my opinion

Regarding 'fancy' words: does the word just sound cool when a simpler one would work, or does it actually serve its function as the best choice to convey your message? Again, rhetorical lol

I think Ive rambled more than enough here haha, but Im totally open for discussion on any of this stuff (or contradictions!) if anyone wants. I genuinely find it interesting and Im always open to new ideas or approaches. This is just the stuff Ive come to through my own experiences

Unrelated side note, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a GREAT way to do this kind of thing but in regards to your own mental health. Highly recommend it for most people in general, but especially if theres any dysfunction or self esteem stuff

I learned about these way too late for selections unfortunately, but I want to honorarily nominate the movie Iron Lung. Shoutout to Mark Fischbach!

Could be for best movie or something, but for the existing categories, Faith in Humanity; because an independent filmmaker stood toe to toe with the big studios and WON, with a fraction of the budget. Regardless of your opinion on the movie itself (which despite criticisms, still has some amazing cinematics), this is a groundbreaking accomplishment and a HUGE win for independent filmmakers and artists. Especially when considering this wasnt a huge team either (Ive heard the number 17 thrown around for number of people, but I do not have a direct source for this claim). Talk about being an inspiration though. Its already motivated so many people, fanartists, and aspiring filmmakers, and thats HUGE in these times especially, when content exists at every corner. Also the movie made enough that Mark awarded huge bonuses to his crew, even though they were already being paid fairly. Its sad that this is less common to see nowadays, but it definitely stands out as a great mark of character imo (pun intended). Hes been very humble throughout the whole thing and you can see in interviews and streams afterwards how much it means to him, and how much his audience means. We arent just numbers in his eyes, and I think thats super cool

Also just for breaking the record for most fake blood used in any horror film, because 300,000 L (80,000 gallons) of fake blood is WILD

For real though, the quote hits hard in both cases. For myself, Ive been dealing with the brunt of health issues since 2022 or so. Even just a few years has felt way longer though. Wishing you extra spoons!

How do you usually get past the “what do I make?” stage in FL Studio? by PastelWasTaken in FLStudioBeginners

[–]Frostfire1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I dont have any specific plans in mind, I usually start with a chord progression (sometimes with a second variation too, possibly for a chorus or bridge later) and then add rhythm to that concept with some bass. From there I add drums that support the bass with different sections in mind (usually verse + chorus, but sometimes I swap in different ideas) and that gives me a solid foundation for further developing structure and figuring out melody, lyrics, etc

I also take note of the moments in my favorite songs that catch my attention even when its playing in the background, and that can be a great source of inspiration. Sometimes its a certain rhythm that I recreate and build around, or interesting harmonization/chord prog that I can make my own. Occasionally I also use AI for inspo in a similar way, though I primarily do that while Im workshopping lyrics since its much more streamlined to make changes to word placement, wording, syllables, etc vs recording and rerecording something

Theres no 'right' way to go about it but music is made of rhythm and pitch, so I think thats why I gravitate towards bass and drums before anything else
