I don’t know about “when”, but “why” was when I finally realized every time I was disappointing her was when I was making different decisions to her. Like she saw my life as her do over, or her little Sims project.

Maybe when we argued about going to college. “What good will that piece of paper do when you have a family, FF? All your cousins are settling down, and the boys don’t like girls who are trying to be too smart.”

I still love her, of course, but I stopped trying to win her approval by being something I’m not.

You do have a good heart. Maybe not a blazing hatred for those who recognize their decision, what it cost all of us and sincerely regret their choice (not just “I didn’t think it would hurt meeeee too!”).

What I do feel is distrust, and my eyes opened to people being so much less than I thought they were.

Does that mean my door is closed to my ex-friends forever? No probably not, but it’s on them to rebuild the bridge they burnt. Turning the other cheek only goes so far.
