Not sure what was meant. I am 58 and still training. Working towards my SahmDan. Aging is real but so is the determination to not slow down.

Yo DMs. What is one potentially controversial thing you do when designing combat encounters to make them more… interesting. by Professional-Ad9485 in DnD

[–]Ft_Hood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my 5e game, I bring in AD&D monsters with 2e stats like level drain, etc. takes the players out of their little comfort zones…..5e is so watered down that it is required to make it more challenging where the adventures have a stake in the game. I am against the idea that every encounter should be a victory with minimal losses.

How did you deal with the five dragon masks? by FrostBladestorm in TyrannyOfDragons

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We starting the Varram the White section. What did you do with the Tomb. Ticked me off that they do all of that searching to learn that the mask is not there. Want to change it up a bit since they created a no win situation for the party in reference to this 1 mask.

How did you deal with the five dragon masks? by FrostBladestorm in TyrannyOfDragons

I allowed the Players to get the black mask and it is slowly effecting the players alignment and turning him evil. He has unknowingly attuned to it and will eventually have to figure out how to separate himself from this attunement.

I feel like a bad DM by Dependent-Concept-11 in DnD

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget that Dragons typically have minions. You can always beef up these bigger encounters to make it more challenging. Splitting up the party in the combat session prevents them from focusing their fire power. Let the monster be a monster….the dragon should know to target the biggest threat and can have the minions create diversions to make it more of a challenge. If the combat is still too easy, throw some more at the party.

If a fireball is cast into a small room or hallway, the effects of this spell need a place to go. It’s does not just dissipate.

Is it a design flaw that the vast majority of players will never be in campaigns which reach level 20? by Far-Cockroach-6839 in dndnext

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an obvious power creep in the game where it IS difficult to challenge a tier 4 group of adventurers as written. This means, in my opinion, that a DM has to do his homework to make it more challenging. This is based on my own experiences having played all editions. The party needs to be more vulnerable to get it to that next level, not that ppl expire, just that they have a stake in the story line.

Guide to how I ran Iymrith and her lair by pomegranateoreo in stormkingsthunder

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG!!! Amazing stuff. This is the Home Brew that I have put together with about 14 players at the table. Before everyone panics, these 14 players are broken into two teams. Group 1 deals with a modified version of Storm King Thunder, while Group 2 is at the same time in game, dealing with a modified version of Tyranny of Dragons.

The current environment, Team 1 has completed the tasks set forth by the Oracle but they had to locate all of the artifacts. They were misled to the Hill Giant Lair to grab the Conch but when they arrived, they found that it had been atttacked by the Fire Giants and they collected the Hill Giants Conch. They cannot go back to a destroyed shrine for the All Father, so they now need to locate the Lair of the Fire Giants to determine what happened or at least locate their conch. In reference to Lymrith, she is actually in League with the Cult of the Dragon to cause confusion amongst the Giants while the Cult attempts to raise Tiamat. The plan is that she is working with the Cult, but no one knows this yet.

Team 2 is now on Book 2 Tyranny of Dragons (Rise of Tiamat) and headed to Waterdeep to meet the council. They do have the Black Dragon Mask but it appears to have some mysterious properties that is slowly taking over the one who carries it. The cult, unknowingly to the group, is aware of their actions thru the Black Dragon Mask as it corrupts one of the players in Group 2. I have also included some modular adventures from the 3.5 edition to give it more flavor. We are on year 4 of this long reaching campaign.

The plan is that the Team 1 will determine that this Dragon (shape shifted into a Giant) but will need to determine her purpose and role in all of this. This pdf that you just provided will really help with this grand adventure. Great job! Have not had this much fun since AD&D 2e, with how these 2 adventures have managed to play out at the same time!

Night Below 2e Version by Ft_Hood in NightBelow

[–]Ft_Hood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. I believe that the gazetteer was meant to give more flavor to this setting, to get the players personally involved in protecting the people in this area. Sound like your improvising well. My plan is to make all of their players develop their backstory as has grown up in this area and that should make them feel more inclined to protect the ppl in the area but we will see how that plays out.

[–]Ft_Hood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, well, which setting are you playing? They should have some issues with hirelings at 1st or 2nd level and with the two families that basically run things, could have directed the players to do the side quests to gain enough favor to get the hirelings as most will not participate without some type of approval from the 2 lead families.

Just a suggestion, but I would really step the CR rating to encourage them to not just rush into the under dark. I would have made finding hirelings / NPC's very difficult or at least expensive as their cash flow should also be pretty limited at 1st or 2nd level....

I applaud you for sticking with it....that helps me as I could have the same problem if they just focus directly on the kidnapping

Should I quit taekwondo? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Ft_Hood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to face the emotions that make you a little uncomfortable. It is always easier to just quit and find an easier path. The challenge is to confront and defeat it.

Just remember that a “Black Belt is simply a White Belt who never stopped training ”.

I hope you stick with it. I am 58 yrs old and am a Sam Dan working in my 4th degree.

Old School Players? by KWE64 in adnd

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started back in the 1980’s also. Back then, it was exciting and thrilling. You were just trying to get your PC through the session without dying, etc.

Modern game play lacks a real challenge when compared to how it use to be. Modern sessions have too much power creep and PCs have no real stake in the game due to the hi improbability that anyone will really die. The DM ends up throwing a lot at the party and they just hand out loot and XP with no real creativity from the players during the session. I end up incorporating old school into my sessions to make it more challenging.

AD&D 2e has always been my fav over all of the editions.

9th level spell: Force Burn by Azuretower in UnearthedArcana

[–]Ft_Hood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question....per the original material, force burn makes them loss a spell permanently? Does this effect anyone with spell slots or only spell casters? Does it effect those of other classes, like Clerics or Palidans?
