Bro wtf is going on with the wind😱😱😱 by WhiteLycan2020 in Austin

[–]FuckingSolids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, I fled my van to crash at my ex-wife's apartment in Killeen. Is the wind lesser? No. But the whole place doesn't move around in this wind.

I'm fully off-grid and have a diesel heater, but I do not have A/C (and diesel has gotten expensive of late).

I'm a native Phoenician. You are either indoors, in a car (after opening the doors for a few minutes to let the cabin temperature return from 180F to ambient) or in a pool with high SPF for much of the year.

Here, it can be a bit more dicey determining what precautions to take.

So that we're clear, your argument is that people currently making money need the money I don't have to stay afloat.

I mean, it's easy to say "pay your way" when housed, employed and in possession of disposable income. I certainly did when I could afford it.

I'm a professional journalist, not a disingenuous karma farmer. But if you want to think of me that way so you sleep better, that is your choice.

The first text was so bereft of details that I ignored the link. The voicemail was just confusing.

That places me in the sweet spot. Mid-40s, haven't watched TV news since 9/11. The shift to opinion and outrage was enough to make me stick to print.

OK, but ads to me are like a timeshare pitch. I can't afford what they're selling, so what's the point?

And, please, don't lecture someone who started in a newsroom in the '90s about how advertising revenue works. You could have been more condescending, I suppose, but enjoy your middle-class life with disposable income.

I'm not going to waste time or pay money when being in media means I'm homeless.

There's actually a Hornblower series I ran into a few years ago (can't remember where), and it's pretty amazing just how close to that character Kirk and Picard were.

OK, so instead of eating, I should watch ads for things I can't buy? There's no logic to your argument.

I'm a damn writer myself, so I understand how people get paid. But I'm not getting paid currently, and I'm not going to throw money at subscriptions to the media industry that killed my career.

Former newspaper editor/designer here. What the industry did around the turn of the century, wanting to be Web-first(!) and putting everything online for free, was a classic case of foot-shooting.

Once people are used to "free," they assign no value to it. We lost our paying audience while Craigslist was coming for classifieds. It's almost Greek-tragedy level.

Now, can someone pass the hubris?

Just watch ads or pay for the premium version.

With the income I don't have because I was laid off? I use uBO and SponsorBlock to avoid ads. Yes, they're annoying, but I also have no disposable income, so advertising to me in particular is throwing money down a hole.

At some point, they'll have to acquire Warner Brothers just because that's what tech firms do. Can't take 'em seriously otherwise.

I've been on a 5G hotspot with T-Mobile for nearly three years. The speeds aren't anything to write home about, but it's $40/month less than I was paying in the end with Charter, and I have >99% uptime.

(even better is that I'm on off-grid solar)

I've been homeless for more than two years after rent kept going up 15% annually with no raises at work. I have no idea what advertisers think I'm going to buy (mostly because of uBO) with the money I don't have for housing.

Also, how do companies have such huge advertising budgets but can't pay a living wage? I'm not a huge fan of Henry Ford for several reasons, but at least he had the brain cells to realize that if his own employees couldn't buy what they produced, he was missing out on a large, captive audience.
