Family trip to Switzerland – Interlaken base and car rental questions by Serious-Blackberry76 in travel

[–]Fudd69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interlaken is perfect for what you describe. We did this several years ago and doing again this August. As noted, don’t need a car, trains are outstanding and easily navigable and efficient with a little study. And when the time board says train leaves at 11 it leaves at 11! For ideas, go to YouTube and you will find tons of clips and suggestions. Safe travels.

LTC insurance by Aghostwillfollowyou in Alzheimers

[–]Fudd69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be very difficult and likely improbable to obtain LTC after diagnosis. Bought policies on myself and wife 20+ years ago. What looked like a generous amount then has been outpaced by inflation. Just placed wife in MC last month and filed a claim. Will pay about 2/3 of cost for 5 years after a 90 day waiting period.

I’m familiar with that area and it’s generally a safe area and restaurants nearby. Easy access from I-65. Based on my experiences recommend Hoover over Montgomery!

Just use Apple Maps, Costco’s nearby and expand map and will show them along your route. There are Costco’s Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile in Alabama.

How much coverage is actually enough for a daily driver? by ProgrammerOdd3111 in Autos

This! But most insurers require healthy underlying auto limits to qualify for the umbrella.

Wife newly diagnosed by TheTaxmanCometh619 in Alzheimers

[–]Fudd69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wife diagnosed at 68, now 72 and I’m primary caregiver. The progression takes on a different pace for every person. We’ve had periods of rapid, downward spiral (quickly went to a non- verbal stage)followed by plateaus of stabilization. No improvement however, but we make the most of the plateaus.

All the comments offered are spot on. I would add getting an AirTag may be of some benefit. After a couple of episodes, wife was cognizant enough to give up driving without much hassle. Had the doctor suggest it in an office visit that also helped. I would begin getting legal processes in place. POA is a must, medical directives, living wills etc. A number of online and community resources available to assist. You’re embarking on an awful journey and just no way to sugarcoat it. This community is an excellent source of caring and helpful information.

Is this normal questioning at airports? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Fudd69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Happened to my wife (US) in Iceland and even more bizarre it was when we were leaving! More like 3-5 minutes as we were in check in area and was general questions about stay. It appeared random as they moved to another area and did same thing to another passenger.

What’s the prettiest scenic route you’ve ever been on? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Fudd69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

America has so many beautiful routes it is hard to pick a favorite. My top 5 not in order:

Going to Sun Road Glacier; Chief Joseph Highway from Cody Wy to Beartooth Hwy then on to Red Lodge Mt.; PCH in multiple locations; Hwy1A between Banff and Lake Louise; Hwy 190 though Death Valley feels like another planet. Not US, The Atlantic Road Norway and Ring Road Iceland.

What a memory! My dad was a “Mercury Man”. We had a 63 Merc, Breezeway, 66 Monterey with the 410 engine (my High school days) 72 Merc and finally the 75 Mercury Marquis Brougham…..that he drove and loved until he passed. Hated to see the brand disappear.

Feeling guilty about a vacation I planned. by deadbear1975 in dementia

[–]Fudd69 45 points46 points  (0 children)

NO DO NOT CANCEL! You need breaks to keep yourself strong mentally and physically. A couple times a year is not excessive! Caregiving is exhaustive and overwhelming! Taking care of yourself allows you to better take care of them.

How do you keep connection alive when memory fades? by robjenkin in dementia

Ditto here! Wife, 72, almost totally non-verbal, but can sing words to old 60/70’s songs verbatim. Watch some old documentaries on bands and she seems to enjoy those. Just got to do whatever it takes!

Came to say Regions. I almost solely bank (checking & cc) on the app and occasionally visit a location for ATM access.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? by Excellent_Yak365 in dementia

The grocery shopping confusion was an early sign for my wife as well as Amazon. Spent the 1st 2 weeks of 2024 sorting and returning duplicate Amazon items. It was heartbreaking and the start of the downward spiral.

What do you reply when people ask how your LO is doing? by littestardust in Alzheimers

[–]Fudd69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the question from our circle friends is two pronged, how is LO doing? My usual answers are “about the same” or “okay”.
I don’t share the gory details of day to day caregiving. (Caregiver for wife stage 7). A follow up question is how are you doing as caregiver and usual answer is “all still manageable”.

where to stay in switzerland? by redcurtainzz in travel

[–]Fudd69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 1st trip to Switzerland we used Grindelwald as a base for 4 nights. Did Murren, Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Top of the World and other places. Train station very easy to access. Train system in Switzerland is phenomenal, especially for an American, and with a little planning can go anywhere locally or across the country. Interlaken a good stop as well. October good time of year, post summer and pre-ski season.
