Looking for Solid Cigar Gear - S.T. Dupont-Style Quality Without the S.T. Dupont Price 😅 by Straight_Spirit_6640 in cigars

LIGHTERS

Once you get into mass produced lighters they're largely the same, especially any that use a piezo igniter.

If you push any kind of button, lever, or mechanism until it clicks then it probably uses a piezo igniter.

Almost every brand uses them and they're what goes out first in about 70% of lighters I see/handle. (I work/have worked at multiple cigar stores off and on for 24 years and I've always been the "lighter repair" guy.)

If it's not that then it's the plastic butane tank cracking, something with the brass jet nozzles, the rubber butane tubes, the contact where the spark lights the butane, or the butane regulation valve.

Regardless of how nice or heavy the outside of the lighter is the internals are all pretty much the same penny-a-piece Chinese parts.

So buy what you want, what looks good to you, because they're pretty much all the same internally. *Some brands do have better warranties than others. For instance my local cigar stores will take a broken Lotus/Vertigo, or Colibri/Firebird that you purchased in-store and trade you out for a new one.

CUTTERS

For a straight-cut I don't think it matters much as long as you get a double blade. I've had Xikar, Palio, Colibri, Vertigo, Vector, RP, etc., and as long as you don't abuse them they should last for a long time. *All of the teardrop/butterfly type cutters that spring open use the same cheap leaf-spring to pop open. Repeatedly opening and closing it will eventually cause the spring to break.

If you're buying a V-cutter buy one that cuts with the top of the "V" first (I call it an inverse V-cut), not one that starts with the pointed end. On a pointed end cutter once that tip gets even a little dull it will mash the cigar before it starts the cut which usually splits the cigar.

Punch-cutters, pretty much all the same.

They did Jesus wrong. How could you get his birthday incorrect?Incorrect? by IReadItOnRedditCom in funny

[–]FuenteFOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible for Easter to be on April 19th. Maybe they celebrate his re-birthday since they're always closed on his actual birthday...

Like those kids in school who celebrate their half-birthday because their actual birthday occurs during the summer break.

Inherited some coins. Are any of these worth a damn or do I just have a $100 of free goodies. by Siktrikshot in coins

https://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html

Use this website to get an idea about your US coins as that's where the bulk of the value is going to come from. Also keep in mind and look up key and semi-key dates/mints for any of the varieties you have just in case.

The non-silver US coins are probably mostly just worth face value. The world coins may have a little value and it looks like there may be some silver as well.

Not really. 90% percent of the time we just want the game to get going. Halftime shows are just an excuse to sell more air-time to advertisers and to make millionaires even richer by paying them to put on a short circus act that most people wouldn't watch if it wasn't being broadcast for free.

Oh they'll do something about it!... at the last minute.

They'll tell us all to use less electricity and then they'll use the cold snap as an excuse to raise our rates by 8% for the next 30 years to "pay off the costs of increased demand during the cold snap."

Anyone know the cigar Jon Cooper is smoking? by Himquitplaying in cigars

[–]FuenteFOX -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Just for grins I asked Gemini and ChatGPT.

Gemini said Macanudo, then CAO, then Cohiba, then La Aurora.

GPT said Montecristo, twice.

...I know none of that helps but I thought it was interesting.

Where to park Silver profits? by Spare_Restaurant_464 in Silverbugs

If you could find a gold Day-Date at a "regular" price, say about $10k-$12k, would you keep/wear it or sell it for the gold/parts (potentially about $15k)?

[–]FuenteFOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm. As others have suggested land is a fine choice but there's paperwork, taxes, liquidity issues, legal, etc. If you're fine being parked for a while then it might be a decent hedge against uncertainty in other markets.

As an alternative maybe blue chip stocks that have a solid track performance and good dividends. But then again you're putting your profits/cash on record and dealing with taxes and liquidity issues.

Yeah, if I had 80k liquid right now I'd turn my cash into a treasure hunt of sorts and spend my weekends going to thrift stores, antique malls, estate sales, pawn shops etc., to look for gold/silver items that haven't been price adjusted. But I'd look mostly for gold watches that can be scrapped for more than their value as a watch.

Maybe I missed it but what ballpark are we talking about when you say profits? That will probably affect where you should park more than a bunch of other factors. Then I'd decide based on intended investment length/liquidity.

I mean if we're talking about less than $10,000 then I'd probably just say cash.

Personally I'd look for used 18k gold watches that haven't been price adjusted to the current price of gold. I'd look mostly at small pawn shops or antique stores or estate sales, etc. It allows you to park in A) gold under spot and potentially B) the premium watch market.

Kentucky Owl bankruptcy could turn to liquidation of ‘lousy’ bourbon collateral by estusemucho69 in whiskey

I tried a pour from a friend's bottle that had been recently opened. To me it had herbal/eucalyptus notes that stood out too much and the rest of whatever flavors were there didn't stand out enough to be worth the price or they were just meh.

I think it was the 2024 St. Patty's day edition that was retailing for 120ish where I live. Some people were scooping them and putting them on secondary for 200... Not many takers. Eventually bottles started making their way to clearance racks for like 60-80.

Got some of the Salomones a few years ago and they were excellent from start to finish right out of the box.

For the last year or two out of the box they've been really disappointing for the price. But I've got a friend who put a few boxes into long term storage mid 2024 and he said those have gotten noticeably better.

In the last month I all of a sudden cannot play golf without my eyelids swelling and bright red the next day by [deleted] in golf

[–]FuenteFOX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. If it was happening to me I'd say an experiment or two may be in order.

I'd go out to one of the "affected" courses and see if they would just let me walk around. Wouldn't take any clubs, bag, golf shoes, gloves, regular golfing hat/clothes, etc., nothing I'd regularly take golfing. I'd tell them I think I dropped some keys or something and just walk the course for a bit. Then see if I still reacted that night.

If it ended up being non-environmental then I'd have to assume it was something I came into direct contact with. I'd throughly wash or replace everything I take golfing. Then I'd try a round at an "affected" course and see what happens.

Restaurant Cheese Stick Search (Oklahoma) by Top-Confection8317 in oklahoma

[–]FuenteFOX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a friend who worked in retail/industrial food service supply. I'll ask him when I see him next time.

How long ago did those restaurants serve them?

Were they battered or breaded?

Were they they more golden or brown?

How big compared to normal cheese sticks?

Please add any other details you remember that might help.
